oratorio palladium: Definition Personal Health and Fitness ? Fish-Oil ...

A diet rich in fish oils has been found to have a positive effect on bedsores, researchers from Tel Aviv University reported in the?British Journal of Nutrition?and the?American Journal of Critical Care.

The authors explained that?fish oils, which are full of antioxidants and Omega-3 fatty acids, can help reduce blood pressure, improve immune system function, lower joint and skin?inflammation, as well aspromote good fetal development. In this study, the researchers had set out to determine what benefits, if any, fish oils might have for?pressure ulcers?(bedsores).

After sitting or lying down for long periods, critically ill patients are at risk of developing bedsores on the skin and underlying tissue.

Professor Pierre Singer of the Sackler Faculty of Medicine and Mirian Theilla at the Rabin Medical Center, designed a randomized trial to find out what the impact of dietary fish oil supplements might be on critically ill patients? bedsores.

The patients had eight grams of fish oil added to their daily diet. Within three weeks, Prof. Singer and team found that:

  • Patients? symptoms of pain and discomfort from bedsores improved by 20% to 25%
  • There was significantly less inflammation throughout the patients? bodies
  • Their immune systems improved

Improving the immune system

Bedsores form because of a lack of oxygen, skin wetness and reduced bloodflow. The team had been inspired from a prior study which demonstrated that dietary fish oil supplements for bedridden patients increased levels of oxygen in body tissues. They wondered whether this increase in oxygen levels might help improve the symptoms of bedsores.

They recruited 40 critically ill patients to take part in the randomized study that they created themselves. Twenty of the participants received standard hospital food, while the other 20 ate the same, with eight grams of fish oil added each day.

As mentioned earlier,?significant improvements in bedsore symptoms were detected within three weeks in the fish oil group, compared to those on just the standard hospital diet.

They also found that the fish oil supplementation had boosted the patients? immune systems and helped reduce the swelling.

Professor Singer said:

?We saw a modification in the expression of a group of molecules associated with directing leukocytes, or white blood cells, in the direction of the wound, which could explain the improved healing.?

Blood levels of C-reactive protein were also significantly lower among those receiving the extra fish oils in their food. C-reactive protein is linked to inflammation and bacterial and viral infections, tissue injury, rheumatic diseases, and necrosis.

Fish oils for natural pain management?

The team wonder whether fish oils may be useful for natural pain therapy.

They plan to carry out a study which measures pain intensity among post-surgical patients after knee or hip replacements, and correlate those measurements with the amount of fish oil they received.

What are fish oils?

Fish oils come from?oily fish, also known as?fatty fish, such as salmon, sardines, herring, tuna, mackerel and trout.

Nutritionists and scientists are interested in two particular substances found in fish oils:

  • DHA, which stands for docosahexaenoic acid
  • EPA, which stands for eicosapentaenoic acid

DHA and EPA are types of Omega-3 fatty acids.

Fillets of oily fish consist of up to 30% oil. Non-oily fish, also known as white fish, only have high fish-oil levels in the liver. Oily fish, apart from being good sources of Omega-3 fatty acids, are also rich in?vitamins?A and D. White fish contain all these ingredients, but much less.

Although oily fish are thought of as better for the health than white fish (white fish is not bad for you), science has not yet proven this.

Most health authorities in North America and Western Europe encourage their people to regularly consume oily fish, or to take fish oil supplements, because of their health benefits.

Previous research on fish oils

    • Post-partum depression (post-natal depression)?- scientists from the University of Connecticut School of Nursing found that?DHA consumption during pregnancy probably helps reduce the risk of developing post-natal depression.
    • Multiple sclerosis?- several nutritionists, health care professionals and laypeople say that Omega-3 fatty acids are good for people with?multiple sclerosis. However, Norwegian scientists carried out a study and?found no link between Omega-3 fatty acid consumption and improved multiple sclerosis symptoms.
    • Eyesight?-?people who consume plenty of DHA are less likely to develop age-related vision loss, Canadian researchers found.
    • Prostate cancer?- there have been mixed findings regarding fish oils and?prostate cancer. One study found that?fish oils lower a man?s risk of developing prostate cancer, while another?found an association between Omega-3 levels and a higher risk of developing aggressive prostate cancer.
    • Mental health?-?fish oils were found to help people with ADHD, and other behavioral problems.
    • Memory?- an article in?PLOS One?reported that?working memory among young healthy adults improves if they raise their Omega-3 fatty acid consumption.

Structure of carbon's 'Hoyle state' revealed

Dec. 10, 2012 ? A North Carolina State University researcher has taken a "snapshot" of the way particles combine to form carbon-12, the element that makes all life on Earth possible. And the picture looks like a bent arm.

Carbon-12 can only exist when three alpha particles, or helium-4 nuclei, combine in a very specific way. This combination is known as the Hoyle state. NC State physicist Dean Lee and German colleagues Evgeny Epelbaum, Hermann Krebs and Ulf-G. Meissner had previously confirmed the existence of the Hoyle state using a numerical lattice that allowed the researchers to simulate how the protons and neutrons interact. When the researchers ran their simulations on the lattice, the Hoyle state appeared together with other observed states of carbon-12, proving the theory correct from first principles.

But they also wanted to find out how the nucleons (the protons and neutrons inside the nucleus of an atom) were arranged inside the nucleus of carbon-12. This would enable them to "see" the structure of the Hoyle state. Using the same lattice, the researchers, along with collaborator Timo Laehde, found that carbon-12's six protons and six neutrons formed three "alpha clusters" of four nucleons each. At low energy, the alpha clusters tended to clump together in a compact triangular formation. But for the Hoyle state, which is an excited energy state, the three alpha clusters combined in a "bent arm" formation.

The researchers' findings will appear this month in Physical Review Letters.

"It's interesting that a straight chain seems not to be the preferred configuration for the Hoyle state," Lee says. "A bend in the chain seems necessary. This work leads us to the question of what other nuclei have such alpha cluster shapes. These would be rather exotic structures in nuclear physics and open some really interesting questions regarding shape and stability. For example, can we have longer chains of alpha clusters? We are investigating these possibilities."

The work was funded by the U.S. Department of Energy; the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft Deutscher Forschungszentren, and Bundesministerium fuer Bildung und Forschung in Germany; European Union HadronPhysics3 Project and the European Research Council; and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. Computational resources were provided by the Juelich Supercomputing Center. The NC State Department of Physics is part of the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences.

Luck leads another Colts rally, beat Titans 27-23

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? Adam Vinatieri is still winning games with his foot.

Andrew Luck is still winning games he's not supposed to.

On Sunday, the clutch kicker and hotshot rookie teamed up again, leading the Colts back from a 13-point halftime deficit for another come-from-behind victory, 27-23 over Tennessee.

"Everybody on the team ? offensively, defensively, special teams ? just plays football. They're not worried about the scoreboard too much, not worried about what's going on," Luck explained. "They're aware of the situations, and we just go out there and play football to the best of our abilities. It's just not overthinking all the situations."

That much is expected from Vinatieri, who owns four Super Bowl rings and has long been considered the best clutch kicker in league history.

But it's not supposed to be this way for the No. 1 overall draft pick.

He now has six fourth-quarter comebacks this season, one more than Ben Roethlisberger had in 2004 and Vince Young had in 2006 ? the highest single-season total by a rookie quarterback since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger. It came on the same day he passed Peyton Manning for the most yards passing by a rookie in Colts history and moved into second among all NFL rookies, trailing only Carolina's Cam Newton (4,051). Luck has 3,792 yards with three games to play.

Indy (9-4) has now won a league-high eight one-possession games and this one put them on the verge of making the playoffs as coach Chuck Pagano watched his third straight game inside Lucas Oil Stadium. Pagano recently completed his final round of chemotherapy for leukemia and could be back on the sideline for the team's final regular season game on Dec. 30.

Sunday's losses by Cincinnati and Pittsburgh have made the playoff scenario incredibly simple for Indy, too: Win one more and they've got a ticket to the postseason, less than 12 months after finishing 2-14 last season and less than five months after being branded the league's worst team in the preseason power rankings.

"We've got faith in this team, in not quitting," defensive end Cory Redding said. "We don't concede to the word 'quit,' and especially not at home."

If Tennessee (4-9) didn't understand before, they certainly do after another stinging defeat at the hands of the Colts.

A year ago, the 0-13 Colts derailed the Titans' playoff plans. In October, Indy did it again, rallying to force overtime, winning the coin toss and then running right down the field. It ended with Vick Ballard's twisting dive into the end zone.

This time, Tennessee had no one else to blame.

Cassius Vaughn picked off Jake Locker and scored on a 3-yard interception return to give Indy a 21-20 lead late in the third quarter.

"It was one that I shouldn't have thrown," Locker said. "I should be able to handle that position. I thought something different was happening."

Locker's second pick of the day set up Vinatieri's shorter field goal. The biggest mistake of all came even later.

Following Vinatieri's second field goal, the Titans got the ball back at their own 20 with 3:48 left. On the first play, Locker threw 4 yards to Kenny Britt. On the next play, Chris Johnson ran for 6 yards to the 30. But Tennessee coach Mike Munchak and Locker both thought the officials marked Johnson short, so Locker rushed the offense to the line and ran a quarterback sneak for no yards before Munchak could get his attention.

Locker then threw back-to-back incompletions, forcing a punt on fourth down, and the Colts ran out the clock. Locker was 22 of 35 for 262 yards with one TD and the two picks.

"We were in no huddle and we gave him the code work for a sneak because originally when he went down, it didn't appear that he had the first down," Munchak said. "Obviously, when they marked it, he already had the play and he just ran it. We were trying to contact him, but with all of the chaos, he just assumed that he still needed the first down."

Luck and the Colts had their share of miscues in the first half, including Luck's poor decision to throw the ball as he was being pulled to the ground. Will Witherspoon picked it off and ran it back 40 yards to give Tennessee a 17-7 late in the first half. Rob Bironas made it 20-7 with a 31-yard field goal in the final minute.

Indy rebounded in the second half.

Luck opened the third quarter by leading the Colts on a methodical 14-play, 80-yard drive that ended with Delone Carter's 1-yard TD run. Luck finished 16 of 34 for 196 yards with one TD and two picks.

The game turned when Pat McAfee booted a 52-yard punt out of bounds at the Titans 1 and Vaughn jumped in front of Nate Washington and picked off the pass as he dived into the end zone.

All Tennessee could muster after that was a 25-yard field goal from Bironas, while Luck and Vinatieri combined to give Indy the win.

"That's him. He's resilient," interim coach Bruce Arians said of Luck. "I can't say enough about him because I think that's what separates him from the young quarterbacks is the ability to overcome bad plays."

Notes: Reggie Wayne caught six passes for 64 yards and one score, passing Andre Reed for No. 10 on the league's career receptions list. Reed had 951. Wayne has 956. ... Britt had a season-high 143 yards on eight catches, while Chris Johnson ran 19 times for 44 yards. ... Ballard ran for a season-high 94 yards after the team rushed for only 12 yards in the first half. ... The Titans are 0-5 all-time at Lucas Oil Stadium. ... Indy played the second half without C Samson Satele (ankle) and RT Winston Justice (biceps). ... Titans TE Jared Cook left with a right shoulder injury.

(AP) ? The decaying carcass of a whale that washed onto a California beach was towed out to sea Saturday, five days after it washed ashore and created a stench near the Malibu homes of movie stars and millionaires.

A tugboat hired by a homeowners' association towed the carcass of the huge fin whale about 20 miles from shore, Los Angeles County Fire Inspector Brian Riley said.

The 40-foot-long, 40,000-pound juvenile male washed ashore Monday near Point Dume, attracting onlookers who wandered down the narrow beach to look at the remains ? white bones, rolls of blubber and the tail flukes trailing along the water's edge. Massive estates line the cliffs high above the beach in Malibu.

Jonsie Ross, marine mammal coordinator for the California Wildlife Center, said evidence suggests the whale was hit by a ship.

No government agency took action to remove the dead whale, and it appeared the job would be left to Mother Nature.

The prospect frustrated James Respondek, who worried that the carcass would draw sharks and pose a threat to his young daughter, who swims in the cove, and to his favorite surfing spot down the beach.

"There seems to be no readiness to take responsibility, to take action, just a lot of excuses.'I don't have a boat, I don't have the money, I don't have the resources,' they all told me," he said Friday.

The Fire Department's lifeguards patrol beaches in Malibu, but the homeowners' association did not take their offered to assist with the towing, Riley said.

Fin whales are endangered, and about 2,300 live along the West Coast. They're the second-largest species of whale after blue whales and can grow up to 85 feet, weigh up to 80 tons and live to be 90 years old.

10 Things You Must Know About Getting the Interview! | Personal ...

Power up your networking, resumes and interviews: ?GET HIRED!

In order to hook and reel in your dream job, you?ll need to first get your foot in the door for the interview and then make a great impression so you tip the hiring scale in your favor and get the job offer. ?So let?s discuss how you can best prepare yourself for your opportunity day!? In order to be invited to interview for a given position, you must?first grab?the attention of the company?s hiring manager or a corporate recruiter.

The savvy job candidate is always looking for better ways to network and superior strategies to help him stand out in the minds of his prospective employer. Use online social media to your advantage. Make sure your LinkedIn profile is 100% ?complete. ?At the bare minimum connect to at least 35 people. According to a LinkedIn spokesperson, Krista Canfield, members with complete profiles are 40 times more likely to receive opportunities through LinkedIn. Change your status on LinkedIn and other social networking sites to let people know that you?re open to new positions. ?Choose your connections wisely; only add people you actually know or with whom you?ve done business. ?A recruiter or hiring manager may choose to contact one of your connections to ask about you; make sure that all your connections are people you know and trust.

When connecting to others on LinkedIn, twitter or Facebook, take the extra time to write a line or two about how you know the other person and why you?d like to connect to them. ?Follow Dan Schawbel?s, the Personal Branding Guru?s advice and ?develop a positioning, or personal brand statement that depicts who you are, what you do and what audience you serve, so that people get a feeling for how you can benefit their company?. ?Above all, be sure to search for jobs using a combination of online and in person networking so you don?t miss hidden opportunities that aren?t posted online.?Don?t assume that the only way to find a job today is using online job boards! ?Susan Adams, a contributing writer for? Forbes asserts that?Networking Is Still The Best Way To Find A Job, Her survey results showed that despite the explosion of online job search tools, from job boards to networking sites like LinkedIn, the conventional wisdom among career coaches holds that most people still find jobs through networking.

Once you have identified the company you want to work for and a job opening that interests you, you?re now at the stage that you need to write a compelling cover letter. ?The purpose of your cover letter is to attract the attention of the hiring manager and entice him to review your resume so you get the job interview! ?In order to stand out from your competition, your cover letter must show that you?re the best candidate for the job and make a great first impression.

Most job candidates are aware that they must write a clear and concise cover letter free of grammatical errors but they forget the most essential piece that?s needed to impress a prospective employer; ?the cover letter (and attached resume) must show that you have certain skills and accomplishments that will benefit the company! ?Your cover letter will be compelling if it shows that you understand the company?s mission and reveals that your skills and accomplishments fit the criteria for that specific job opening. Showing why you?re the right fit for the job is the most important step to getting noticed so you get your foot in the door for an interview (which is the first step towards getting hired) and yet is often overlooked or flat out ignored by job candidates.

5 Things You Must Know About Your Cover Letter for Getting the Interview!

1. Personalize your introductory sentence; preferably address the specific person who will be in charge of hiring for this position. ?For example, ?Dear Ms. Jones, at the suggestion of ____(a person from ideally who works within the company), I am applying for____.?

2.?Your next sentences should flatter the company! Use an enthusiastic tone to show how your interest and passion match the company?s history or its goals. ?I have long admired your_____ or ?I am excited to hear your hiring in connection with your new venture.? This statement should show that you know about the company?s reputation, history or current situation.

3.?Use the next paragraph to ?communicate why your experience (initiative/skills/education) make you an ideal candidate for this job. ?Example: ??As a ____at the University of ____, I was responsible for recruiting_____ ?and I was able to increase enrollment by 90% in my first year. These few sentences are critically important! They should indicate why your specific skills and accomplishments demonstrate that you are a great fit for this job; Show from your previous accomplishments?how you will add value to their company in ways that are relevant to that particular position .

4.?Your ending should thank the person for his/her time.

5.?And the closing should be something simple like Sincerely,__.

Your cover letter is the face, if you will, for your resume, so make sure to proofread and review it so it?s flawless! ?You must do some research on the company and learn about their mission, current issues and if possible, the gap they are trying to fill. ?The more you know about the company the easier it will be for you to answer the following question; Why should the hiring manager hire me? Make sure you tailor your letter?s message to fill the needs of the hiring manager!

Now that you have constructed a compelling cover letter, you must accompany it with a resume that makes you shine! To quote Jay Block, an international best-selling author, career strategist and resume expert, ?average resumes won?t attract outstanding jobs.? Hiring authorities, including human resource professionals, executive recruiters and hiring managers, don?t have time to read stacks of boring biographies from strangers.? They want to know quickly what specific contributions you can make and results you can produce.? So, by definition, a value-based r?sum? is a marketing document that communicates your ability to produce significant results better than other qualified candidates.? Avoid formatting what Jay Block calls a ?chronological obituary? biographies prepared on white paper w/black ink formatted like millions of others.

Your resume should be a Career Summary: an information rich snapshot of your accomplishments. Jay Block refers to this as The Showcase Format. ?The showcase format is a r?sum? presentation that communicates your Ultimate Results, Core Strengths and Value-added Messages in 15-20 seconds professionally and in a reader-friendly manner.

*resume tip: (Make Sure the Top Third of the Page Has the Most Relevant Information)

5 Things You Must Know About Your Resume for Getting the Interview!

The 5 Questions Value-Based R?sum?s Must Answer

1. What position(s) are you seeking or what are you qualified to do that would be of value to our company or organization?

2. What results and contributions make you better than other qualified candidates?

3. What skills, qualifications and assets do you bring to the job that would lead us to believe you can produce the results you say you can produce?

4. Can you provide specific results (achievements) that you produced in the past that would indicate that you can produce them in the future?

5. Can you bring business to the firm or show results from your past work that indicate you could help increase their profit?

Remember:

? Your resume is your marketing brochure

? Make sure your resume sells you?provide evidence of how you can benefit the company and how they can profit from you!? Make it Value Based

? Tailor each resume to the needs of each company and position

A well crafted cover letter and resume should ?boost your confidence in your interview and increase your chances for getting noticed and getting hired.
