Small tsunami waves hit Japan after 7.3-magnitude earthquake ...

A 7.3-magnitude quake strikes off Japan's northeastern coast, temporarily triggering some tsunami waves reaching up to three feet, but there was no concern of a widespread tsunami. TODAY's Erica Hill reports.

By NBC News staff and wire reports

Updated at 5:40 a.m. ET:?Tsunami waves up to 3 feet high hit the coast of Japan Friday, after a?strong earthquake in the sea that shook buildings 300 miles away in Tokyo.

The temblor was registered at a magnitude of 7.3 and struck at 5:18 p.m. local time (3:18 a.m. ET), according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The earthquake hit in the same area as the devastating quake and tsunami in March last year that killed nearly 20,000 people and triggered the world's worst nuclear crisis in 25 years.

Friday's?quake struck about 200 miles southeast of Kamaishi, the USGS said. The epicenter was 6.2 miles beneath the seabed,?according to the?Japan Meteorological Agency.

Buildings in Tokyo swayed for at least several minutes, but there were no early reports of damage or injuries.

Coastal residents told to flee to higher ground
NHK television broke off regular programming to warn that a strong quake was due to hit shortly before the impact was felt. Afterward, the announcer repeatedly urged all near the coast to flee to higher ground.

The quake triggered a tsunami warning for?the Miyagi Prefecture, which was at the center of the 2011 disaster. It also sparked tsunami advisories for Pacific Coast areas of several other?prefectures.

But by 5:20 a.m. ET, two hours after the quake, the Japan?Meteorological?Agency had canceled?all tsunami advisories and warnings.

A handout image released by the U.S. Geological Survey shows the location of Friday's earthquake off the northeast coast of Japan.

Still, a batch of tsunami waves, measuring about 3 feet tall, hit the town of Ishinomaki, in Miyagi Prefecture, about an hour after the earthquake, according to Japanese television. Another tsunami wave, measuring about a foot tall, was detected at Ofunato.

"I was in the center of the city the very moment the earthquake struck. I immediately jumped into the car and started running away towards the mountains. I'm still hiding inside the car," Ishinomaki resident Chikako Iwai told Reuters.

"I have the radio on and they say the cars are still stuck in the traffic. I'm planning to stay here for the next couple of hours," Iwai said.

A 6.2-magnitude aftershock struck at about 3:31 a.m. ET, but no damage or injuries were immediately reported.

The government declared in December that the disaster was under control, but much of the area is still free of population.

Tokyo Electric Power, the operator of the Fukushima nuclear plant, reported no irregularities at its nuclear plants after Friday's quake.

Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda canceled campaigning in Tokyo ahead of a Dec. 16 election and was on his way back to his office, but there was no immediate plan to hold a special cabinet meeting.

(AP) ? An angry Mohammed Morsi refused Thursday to call off a referendum on a disputed constitution that has sparked Egypt's worst political crisis in two years, drawing chants of "topple the regime!" from protesters who waved their shoes in contempt.

The Egyptian president's uncompromising stand came a night after thousands of his supporters and opponents fought pitched battles outside his Cairo palace, leaving at least six dead and 700 injured.

Speaking in a nationally televised address, Morsi accused some in the opposition of serving remnants of Hosni Mubarak's authoritarian regime and vowed he would never tolerate anyone working for the overthrow of his "legitimate" government.

That brought shouts of "the people want to topple the regime!" from the crowd of 30,000 Morsi opponents ? the same chant used in the protests that brought down Mubarak.

Morsi also invited the opposition to a "comprehensive and productive" dialogue starting Saturday at his presidential palace, but gave no sign that he might offer any meaningful concessions.

The opposition has already refused to engage Morsi unless he first rescinds decrees giving him nearly unrestricted powers and shelves the draft constitution hurriedly adopted by his Islamist allies in a marathon session last week.

Morsi said the referendum on the disputed charter would go ahead as scheduled on Dec. 15. He also refused to rescind the Nov. 22 decrees.

Reading from prepared notes, Morsi frequently broke off to improvise. He wore a black tie in mourning for the six people killed in Wednesday's clashes.

From Washington, President Barack Obama called Morsi to express "deep concern" about the deaths and injuries of protesters in Egypt, according to a White House statement.

The statement Thursday night said that Obama told Morsi that he and other political leaders in Egypt must make clear to their supporters that violence is unacceptable. Obama welcomed Morsi's call for a dialogue with opposition leaders in Egypt but stressed that such a dialogue should occur without preconditions. The United States also has urged opposition leaders to join in talks without preconditions.

Earlier Thursday, Morsi's troubles grew when another of his advisers quit to protest his handling of the crisis, raising to seven the number of those in his 17-person inner circle who have abandoned him. The only Christian in a group of four presidential assistants has also quit.

Violence persisted into the night, with a group of protesters attacking the Cairo headquarters of Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood, ransacking the ground floor. Another group of protesters attacked the Brotherhood's offices in the Cairo district of Maadi. Outside the president's house in his hometown of Zagazig, 50 miles north of Cairo, police fired tear gas to disperse hundreds of protesters, security officials said.

During his speech, Morsi repeated earlier assertions that a conspiracy against the state was behind his move to assume near unrestricted powers, but he did not reveal any details of the plot.

"It is my duty ... to protect institutions of the nation," he said. "I will always fulfill this role, no matter how much pressure or what the situation."

Opposition protesters jeered and raised their shoes in contempt.

"We have two simple demands: Cancel the decrees and change the draft constitution. Other than that he can just go away," shouted one protester, Osama El-Sayyed.

"I have no hope in this man" shouted another as thousands chanted "Erhal! Erhal!" ? "Leave! Leave!" in Arabic.

Later, a photograph of Morsi giving his speech was circulated on social networking sites alongside one of Mubarak addressing the nation during the 18-day uprising that toppled his 29-year rule in February 2011. Both wore black ties and dark suits.

The opposition issued a statement rejecting Morsi's offer of a dialogue, and spokesman Hussein Abdel-Ghani dismissed Morsi's address.

"Tonight, he proved that he is not a president for all Egyptians, but merely the representative of the Muslim Brotherhood in the presidency," Abdel-Ghani said on state television.

Earlier Thursday, the Egyptian army and elite Republican Guard sealed off the presidential palace with tanks and barbed wire, following the worst night of violence of the two-week crisis.

Responding to a call to "protect" the presidential palace, thousands of Brotherhood members and other Islamists descended on the area Wednesday, beating and chasing away some 300 opposition protesters who had been staging a peaceful sit-in there. Hours of street battles followed.

"We raise Egypt's flag but they raise the Brotherhood flag. This is the difference," Cairo protester Magdi Farag said as he held the tri-colored national flag stained with blood from his friend's injury in the clashes.

Are long title reigns cursed?

Tattooed on the flesh of the WWE Champion is a classic phrase of rebellion, self-confidence and the general fearless attitude that often accompanies a world-beater in the vein of CM Punk.

?Luck is for losers,? the words go. Of course, in light of Punk?s recent scope to trim a cartilage tear in his left knee, he might want to rethink that particular credo. Not only has the injury effectively removed Punk from the main event of WWE TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs and may endanger his 381-day reign as WWE Champion, but also as it turns out, the champ?s sorry serendipity is not without precedent.

Call it the ?long-reign curse,? if such a thing exists, and before the WWE Universe starts crying foul or accusing us of undue superstition, consider the facts. Two of the longest-tenured champions of the last decade met similarly ignominious fates as The Second City Saint did during their runs at the top, ultimately relinquishing the title as a result of their injuries. The first instance came in 2006, during Batista?s unprecedented stint as World Heavyweight Champion. In the midst of a nearly 300-day run with the ?Big Gold Title,? Batista suffered a triceps tear against Mark Henry at a WWE Live Event. The ramifications of the injury forced The Animal to relinquish his prize in a tearful address on the Jan. 3 edition of SmackDown, cutting his reign short at 285 days. (WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE HISTORY)

The second instance came at the expense of, oddly enough, the man CM Punk just surpassed on the list of WWE Champions of the modern era: John Cena. (CHARTING PUNK?S REIGN) The Cenation leader had been champion for a year and change when he tore his pectoral muscle clean off the bone in the midst of a match against Randy Orton on Oct. 1, 2007. Though Cena persevered and finished the contest, it ultimately came at a cost as Mr. McMahon vacated the title the next night on ECW. Cena?s injury ended his reign at 380 days. News of Punk?s knee surgery ? eerily enough ? broke on day 380 of his own stint as WWE Champion.

So we ask again: Are these simply unhappy coincidences? Or did Punk truly fall victim to the force dismissed by the marks on his skin?

First synthesis of gold nanoparticles inside human hair for dyeing and much more

ScienceDaily (Dec. 5, 2012) ? In a discovery with applications ranging from hair dyeing to electronic sensors to development of materials with improved properties, scientists are reporting the first synthesis of gold nanoparticles inside human hairs.

Their study appears in ACS' journal Nano Letters.

Philippe Walter and colleagues explain that gold nanoparticles -- 40,000-60,000 of which could fit across the width of a human hair -- are a hot topic. Scientists are exploring uses, ranging from electronics and sensors to medical diagnostic tests and cancer treatments. Gold nanoparticles have been deposited on hair for use as electrodes, and gold nanoparticles had been used to dye wool. Walter's team looked at a new use -- dyeing hair, inspired by the ancient Greeks' and Romans' use of another metal, lead, to color their hair.

They describe the first synthesis of fluorescent gold nanoparticles inside human hair. It involved soaking white hairs in a solution of a gold compound. The hairs turned pale yellow and then darkened to a deep brown. Using an electron microscope, the scientists confirmed that the particles were forming inside the hairs' central core cortex. The color remained even after repeated washings.

Nokia's Lumia deal with China Mobile raises hopes

HELSINKI (Reuters) - Nokia is to partner with China Mobile, the world's biggest operator, to launch a version of its flagship Lumia smartphone tailored for the world's largest market.

China Mobile, which has more than 700 million subscribers but no contract to sell iPhones, will start selling the Lumia 920T, the first phone to be based on Microsoft's new Windows Phone 8 platform.

Nokia's Lumia 920 and 820 models are seen crucial for the Finnish company as it tries to regain market share from Apple and Samsung.

"People around the world are responding positively to the new Lumia devices, and we are confident that the enthusiasm will extend to China," president and chief executive Stephen Elop said.

China Mobile's take-up of the 920T, which will use the carrier's home-grown TD-SCDMA network standard, reassured investors about sales of the new phone series.

Also on Wednesday, Nokia unveiled the Lumia 620, its cheapest Windows 8 smartphone. It will be priced at $249 and begin selling in January, first in Asia.

Nokia shares were up 7.1 percent at 1110 GMT. The stock, which has edged higher in recent weeks on hopes of promising Lumia sales, it is still down 28 percent this year.

"It is not a surprise, but it still means a giant opportunity for Nokia, maybe one of the best opportunities for its smartphones right now. This market has a lot of piled-up demand for high-end smartphones," Nordea Markets analyst Sami Sarkamies said.

He said Lumia sales might be helped by the fact China Mobile is the only carrier in China without a contract to sell iPhones.

The Lumia phone will be available for order in China by the end of the year, a bit later than expected, Sarkamies said.

Nokia's share of the global smartphone market has plunged to less than 10 percent from 50 percent during its heyday, before the iPhone arrived in 2007. Today, Nokia is reliant on Windows after dumping its own software platforms last year.

Jamie Davis Smith: Gifts That Enrich -- And Don't Linger

Although some kids may balk at the idea, holiday gifts need not involve toys and games that clutter your home and linger in landfills years after your children have lost interest in them. There are many ways in which gift giving during the holidays can be used to enrich your children's lives and bring them happiness throughout the year. Many of these gift ideas allow you to support local businesses and support your local economy -- and none require getting off the sofa. Although I discuss some gift ideas specific to the D.C. area, with a little research you can come up with equivalent places for the special children in your life who live in other parts of the country.

If you decide to give one of the gifts mentioned below but are worried about not having a box under the tree (or by the menorah) for your child to open, you can print a photo of the gift to wrap and then explain what the "real" gift is to your child. Another option is to wrap a small trinket related to the gift, such as a finger puppet to represent tickets to a puppet show or a few crayons to represent the gift of an art class, so that your child has something to play with immediately.

Musical Theatre Class at Imagination Stage k-1. Photo by C. Stanley Photography

Off to a Magical Land: We are fortunate to live in an area rich in children's theater that can take kids (and their grown-ups) to far off places for an hour or two. Imagination Stage in Bethesda and Adventure Theater in Glen Echo are two theaters that consistently offer top-notch performances for toddlers through tweens. Imagination Stage also offers occasional interactive performances for the preschool set. The Puppet Co. and Tiny Tots, both located in Glen Echo, offer puppet shows for children ages 0-4 year round. The Smithsonian's Discovery Theater located on the National Mall also hosts several performances for children throughout the year. Even the Kennedy Center regularly hosts shows for young drama enthusiasts. All theaters post upcoming shows early and have tickets available for advance purchase. Imagination Stage offers various subscription packages with discounted tickets if you want to treat a lucky little one to multiple performances. Tickets for one child and one parent can provide valued time alone with a child, while tickets for the entire family can create a fun and special day for everyone.

Movement, Art, Music, and More: Yoga, art, and music classes are wonderful gifts to give to children and will keep them busy through the winter months. If you want to plan ahead, you could also give your child the gift of a class or two to take over the summer. For some classes you drop-off your child, which will give you the gift of some free time. For other classes, you stay and take the class with your child, which will give the additional gift of some one-on-one time with a special adult. Lil Omm Yoga in Washington, D.C. specializes in classes for families and children and offers classes for newborns through teens. Circle Yoga, also in Washington D.C., offers a Budding Yogis Program for children of all ages and their families. The Sitar Arts Center in Washington, D.C. also offers classes for infants through teens and classes are available in a variety of areas including early childhood music, dance, drama and creative writing. Imagination Stage in Bethesda offers dance, writing, film making and drama classes and camps for children ages one through 18 with themes ranging from Knights, Princesses and Dragons to Hip-Hop. The District's Department of Parks and Recreation offers classes ranging from art, to digital photography, to gymnastics for children of all ages at their recreation centers throughout the city. These classes are open to everyone, but non-District residents pay a slightly higher fee. Classes for children abound and there are most likely some in your neighborhood. As your friends and neighbors for recommendations and you just may spark a new passion in your child.

Museum Exploration: Even though free museums abound in our area, some require paid admission. Even those museums that are free rely on funds raised through memberships to allow them to provide high-quality exhibits and cover operational expenses. The cost of some memberships may be off-putting at first, but memberships often provide benefits and discounts that help offset, or even exceed, the cost of membership. Additionally, a family membership can serve as a gift for all of the children in a family. A family membership to the National Zoo will get you free parking, free animal crackers and a monthly magazine with a children's section. A membership to the National Aquarium gets you admission to not just the aquarium in Baltimore but also the aquarium on the National Mall, including access to their twice-monthly "Tots and Tales" program and other special programming for children throughout the year. The Smithsonian museums offer something for every child and Smithsonian Membership, starting at just $19, will get you a monthly magazine that lists events, special exhibits and discounts on paid exhibitions such as Imax tickets and admission to the live butterfly exhibit. A Smithsonian membership might provide the benefits you need to get your kids to the National Mall more often. Museum-specific memberships are also available. A membership to the Air and Space Museum is a good choice for young flight enthusiast's while a membership to the Natural History Museum would make a special gift for dinosaur fanatics and archeologists-in-training.

Ideas for Fun: If you find yourself wondering what to with your kids each weekend or they complain that you always do the same things, an annual membership to Our Kids is the gift that will keep on giving. For $26 a year, you and your children will gain access to the Our Kids website, which lists hundreds of activities for infants through teens each week. You will also get a weekly email highlighting the best activities of the week and access to many giveaways throughout the year. I often sit down with my five-year-old son and read off a list of activities we can do that day from the Our Kids website and let him choose what sounds most appealing -- he loves this small gift of power over our day. Older children can use the gift of an Our Kids subscription to take some responsibility for planning family outings.

Monthly Magazines: A subscription to a magazine for children will send a new gift to your front door every month. Every child loves getting mail and a new issue of a favorite magazine each month will bring regular smiles to your home. Highlights for Children, National Geographic Kids, and Sports Illustrated Junior are just some of the magazines published for children. If your child has a particular interest you can find a magazine geared towards them. Older guitar fans might enjoy a subscription to Guitar Player and ballerinas might love a subsection to Dance Magazine. There are even magazines focused on Thomas the Train and Disney Princesses for the preschool set.

You Can Make It Happen: Learn How - Lori Robertson

If you're new here, please subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Deciding that you want to improve yourself is the first, very laudable step on the path to self improvement. Here are a few self-help tips to give you an idea of what you can try.

It?s important not to let unneeded stress get the best of you. If you overreact to a situation, you simply increase your stress, which is unnecessary and undesirable. Accept that there will be setbacks on the way to your goals, and focus on finding solutions to these problems rather than giving up.

You should always strive to be the best in your area. The passions you have should always make you want to achieve greatness. It is easier to make the changes that mean the most to you, even if you aren?t the best. Improve your net value in your field, and this will boost your confidence.

You should work on ensuring that each day is an improvement over the previous one. Try to improve yourself constantly. Set a goal to do something you couldn?t do yesterday, or improve on something you were able to do.

Write out a little pep talk for yourself. On an index card or postcard, write down all the things that are good about you. When things get rough, take the card out, and read over what you have written for inspiration. Make a video of yourself reading it and watch it as often as you need. Why not?

A positive attitude is required for you to make any progress in your development. A negative attitude won?t help you advance in life and may actually lead you down the wrong path. It?s better to remain optimistic, and to remember that this attitude will make it easier for you to successfully attain your goals in life.

Find a book that you can turn to for encouragement. Some people find strength through religious text, others, within inspirational quotes. Sometimes having a physical representation of comfort can help you better manage your day-to-day life.

Employers put a greater emphasis on your ability to work, than the name of the school that you attended. There are of course a few exceptions, such as within the finance and engineering industries. Just get a college degree so that doors will open to you.

When you are working toward self improvement, an important thing to keep in mind is that you are entitled to the best. You have no one to disappoint but yourself. When all is said and done, you will not feel any regrets because you know you worked to the best of your ability.

Therapy is the answer for many with serious problems. Self help books are useful to an extent, but they lack the substance or personal touch that a therapist can provide to a patient. Beyond the professional expertise, one-on-one therapy offers the opportunity for real communication. A psychiatrist can have a discussion with you, where a book cannot.

Don?t solely focus on your outside looks; have a look at the person you are within. In the end, it should not matter what you look like on the outside! Your personality is what will prevail in your life. Try to improve yourself from the inside rather than the outside.

Try different methods and keep track of your progress to find out what is efficient. Remember to take a break from everything once in a while.
