SELF-CONFIDENCE AND BRAIN INJURY - FACT SHEET

MENTAL HEALTH

SELF-CONFIDENCE AND BRAIN INJURY - FACT SHEET

How we feel about ourselves can plummet after a brain injury due to many different causes.

A brain injury can directly lead to depression and fatigue which have a major impact on self-esteem. A group of brain injury survivors once met to discuss and find strategies for issues such as self-confidence. They felt that one felt confident when having a purpose to life, feeling loved, doing well in your chosen role, having hope for the future and being content with who you were. A brain injury was seen as impacting on every issue discussed, with the result that self-confidence was always a problem following a brain injury.

FACTORS INFLUENCING SELF-CONFIDENCE

The group found that the degree of understanding shown by people close to them and the reaction of the general public made a big difference to how they felt about themselves. Families who understood the effects of the brain injury and were supportive instead of critical played a major part in the brain injury survivor feeling more confident. This issue was a difficult one when there were no outward visible signs of a brain injury, such as a wheelchair or facial scarring. In these cases families were more likely to be critical of the survivor's cognitive problems.

Those who constantly compared their current situation and Acquired Brain Injurylities with their situation before the acquired brain injury had more trouble with self-confidence, as did those who could not cope with negative comments from others.

Assertion was seen as critical in becoming more confident. Many felt that they tended either to being resentful and sullen, or became abusive and aggressive in conflict situations.

The passive approach was seen as letting others "stand on" them and push them around. It also involves agreeing with others despite personal feelings. This often led to resentment and levels of distress building up over time.

The aggressive approach was viewed as people "getting their own way" by arguing, making demands, threatening and generally stepping on others. Although people who use this approach may get their own way a lot of the time, others often did not want to be around them.

They discussed how the ideal is two-way communication where problems are solved and the message is put across in a way that allows people to feel good about themselves. Survivors knew that they needed to work on communication skills so that they could see the other person's viewpoint and know how to approach topics appropriately.

The group agreed that body language was an important part of being assertive, including: maintaining eye contact, straight body posture and calm speech.

Sometimes it helped to practise what they had to say to someone else.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS FOR SELF-CONFIDENCE

Survivors often feel that they needed to relearn social skills lost after their brain injury. As this often leads to losing friends and having trouble making new ones, this can be a major key to building up confidence again.

Being prepared to listen to the other person

If someone is tired or in a particularly upset mood, it is better if they calmly tell the other person that they are unable to listen, rather than trying to listen when unable to concentrate. The other person may appreciate the suggestion of another time that will be more suitable.

Listening and clarifying

It was considered important that people give their full attention when listening and ask for more information when needed, e.g. 'I don't follow, can you explain more clearly?'.

Acknowledging the other person and listening effectively

This was considered an important part of letting the other person know they have been heard and understood. The best way to do this is by acknowledging their ideas and feelings, e.g. nodding or saying 'I realise that you must be really frustrated about this too', or, 'I can see where you are coming from'.

PERSONAL STRATEGIES FOR SELF-CONFIDENCE

Brain injury survivors have suggested the following personal strategies for feeling better about themselves:

  • Choose to spend time with positive people, not negative people
  • Become more self-aware and get rid of negative, unhealthy, unproductive thoughts
  • Take up hobbies you will enjoy
  • Set realistic goals and recognise small gains and achievements
  • Learn problem-solving skills to handle the bad times
  • Help someone else
  • Practise relaxation
  • Write a poem or verse that has personal meaning for you
  • Work on meeting new people and improving existing relationships
  • Make a plan for keeping in contact with others, and do something social every week
  • Be assertive and communicate your needs to others - not aggressive or passive
  • Persist despite setbacks
  • Join a support group for survivors
  • Look after your health by eating well, exercising and getting sufficient sleep
  • Use humour and see the funny side of things
  • Accept personal limitations while aiming towards self-improvement
  • Get into positive books and movies (e.g. Power of One, Shawshank Redemption)
  • Grasp opportunities, experience life and make the most of it!

MANTRAS

Some survivors have found mantras useful. These are personal statements or affirmations that can help you get through a tough time. Some examples are:

  • If I change my thoughts I can change my world
  • If it is to be, it's up to me
  • Always stop and think before you act
  • Learning is an active process and I will learn by doing
  • Actions speak louder than words.

Many take comfort in the centuries-old prayer:

"Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference."

Peace Corps Volunteer Renovates Gym, Creates Sports Clubs in Ukraine

Washington, D.C., November 16, 2012 - Peace Corps volunteer Joshua Davis of Eldersburg, Md., is working with his community in Ukraine to help kids get healthy through sports by improving local facilities.

Without funding for new equipment, Davis and school officials feared that the school wouldn?t be able to continue sports education after this year. ?The idea of improving the school?s gym was considered a major priority by the teachers and administration of the local public school,? said Davis, a graduate of Towson University, who has been living and working in Ukraine since March 2011.

But Davis and community members have come together to make saving sports education a priority through the facilities rehabilitation project. A portion of the funds for the project will be raised through the Peace Corps Partnership Program (PCPP), a program that helps support Peace Corps volunteer community projects worldwide.

?Students are expected to practice sports during gym class with balls that are deflated or worn out, in facilities that are outdated and dangerous,? explained Davis. This program will provide new equipment and allow for the local gym to be remodeled, giving students a safe, supervised after school environment.

In addition to fixing up the gym, Davis? program aims to promote healthy lifestyle choices among the youth of his village. ?The hope of this project is to get more students interested in sports at a younger age, so that as they mature they will choose to live a healthy lifestyle,? he said.

The community has already begun to take an active role in the direction and implementation of the project. School administrators will allocate money for gym upgrades and healthy lifestyle classes, and parents are also eager to become involved, having already begun to volunteer to supervise and facilitate after-school sports club. ?The community is the driving force behind the grant and has already begun remodeling the gym in anticipation of new equipment? Davis said.

In order to receive funding through the PCPP, a community must make a 25 percent contribution to the total project cost and outline success indicators for the individual projects. This helps ensure community ownership and a greater chance of long-term sustainability. One hundred percent of each tax-deductible PCPP donation goes toward a development project. Those interested in supporting Davis? project in Ukraine can visit: www.peacecorps.gov/donate. Davis? project number is: 343-364.

About Peace Corps/Ukraine: More than 2,630 Peace Corps volunteers have served in Ukraine since the program was established in 1992. Currently, about 463 volunteers serve in Ukraine. Volunteers work in the areas of education, economic development and youth development. Volunteers are trained and work in Russian and Ukrainian.

About the Peace Corps: Since President John F. Kennedy established the Peace Corps by executive order on March 1, 1961, more than 200,000 Americans have served in 139 host countries. Today, 9,095 volunteers are working with local communities in 75 host countries. Peace Corps volunteers must be U.S. citizens and at least 18 years of age. Peace Corps service is a 27-month commitment and the agency?s mission is to promote world peace and friendship and a better understanding between Americans and people of other countries. $500 Million Settlement Reached In California Slaughterhouse Abuse Case

FRESNO (AP) ? A landmark $500 million agreement was reached to settle a slaughterhouse abuse case in California that led to the biggest meat recall in U.S. history in 2008, an animal welfare group announced Friday.

The civil settlement with the owners of Westland/Hallmark Meat Co. is the largest-ever penalty for an animal abuse case, and the first time federal fraud statutes have been used, according to the Humane Society of the United States, the lead plaintiff.

The settlement is largely symbolic because the company is bankrupt.

?It?s a deterrence judgment,? said Jonathan R. Lovvorn, chief counsel for animal protection litigation at the Humane Society of the United States. ?It informs other federal government contractors that when your contract says you provide humane handling, if you don?t do that you?re likely to end up bankrupt as well.?

As a supplier of meats for the national school lunch program, the Riverside County company had signed federal contracts certifying that it would provide humane treatment of animals sent there for slaughter.

The animal welfare group filed a civil complaint in U.S. District Court in Riverside in 2009, and the U.S. Justice Department intervened after research showed that one of the packing plant partners had two felony convictions related to illegal industry practices.

?This is a first-of-its-kind lawsuit regarding farm animals, the first time federal fraud statutes have been applied,? Lovvorn said. ?When you look at the video, it?s about as far from humane treatment as you can get.?

The widely circulated video shot by an undercover operative showed ?downer cows? ? those too weak or sick to walk ? being dragged by chains, rammed by forklifts and sprayed with high-pressure water by employees who wanted them to stand and walk to slaughter.

Downed cows can pose an increased risk for mad cow and other diseases. Thus far, no mad cow cases have been linked to the recalled meat from Westland/Hallmark Meat Co.

The video sparked the largest beef recall in U.S. history. Nearly 37 million pounds of the 143 million pounds recalled had gone to school lunch programs, and most had been eaten by the time of the recall. The recall cost taxpayers $150 million.

The lawsuit alleged the government paid the company money it was not entitled to because the company lied about meeting the conditions of its contracts.

The settlement agreement followed another slaughterhouse abuse investigation in August in Central California.

In that case, the federal government suspended school lunch purchases from Central Valley Meat Co. of Hanford after a video by an undercover operative from Compassion Over Killing showed downed animals being repeatedly kicked, shocked, shot and pulled by the tails by workers trying to get them to stand. That cruelty investigation is ongoing.

In the Hallmark case, the partial settlement announced Friday is with two of nine defendants in the case, Donald Hallmark Sr. and Donald Hallmark Jr. Neither is the packing plant partner with the felony convictions.

Under the terms, the father and son also have five years to pay $316,802, or the bulk of their remaining personal assets. They have also agreed to cooperate fully with the Justice Department and the Humane Society of the United States in settling the litigation against the remaining seven defendants.

Attorneys for the defendants and the Justice Department did not immediately return calls seeking comment. The symbolic settlement will become final when the cases against the other defendants are resolved, Lovvorn said.

If accepted by the court, the $497 million agreement reached with the defendants against the bankrupt company likely will go unpaid, Lovvorn said. The amount was determined under the treble damages provision of the federal False Claims Act.

In the court papers, the plaintiffs alleged that the meatpacking plant slaughtered and processed downer cows from January 2004 to September 2007 at the average rate of one every six weeks.

Home Remodeling On the Rise

1 417 1353007433 Home Remodeling On the Rise

According to the National Association of Home Builders, home remodeling projects have seen a strong uptrend this year, back toward 2005 when the housing market was at its peak. Even though we are nowhere close to that now, these numbers show more consumer confidence in the market. Repairs and improvements that had been put off are now being taken on. So, what are the best improvements you can make to increase the value of your home today?

Kitchens

Kitchens have taken over the top spot for most popular renovations project. This is an indication that people are focusing more on luxury instead of necessity. They are generally the most expensive remodel and can take the longest time to complete. The estimate for an average kitchen remodeling was around $100,000.

While the return on investment for a kitchen is only around 66 percent, it can be a worthwhile investment for selling your home. Most buyers look at a kitchen first and will buy or pass on a house based on that room alone. However, don?t do an expensive remodel if your kitchen only needs a few updates. A home that has a more expensive kitchen than others in the area will be overpriced for the neighborhood. ?

Bathrooms

This is another area that can make or break a sale, especially for a master bath. Don?t skimp on that room since it?s supposed to be luxurious. Install two sinks, custom showers, and plenty of correct lighting. Outdated bathrooms require a lot of work, so buyers want to see that work already completed to pay top price for a home. Size is a big deal, so if you plan to remodel the bath, try to find additional space.

Attic Bedrooms

If you have attic space that?s unused, converting it into a bedroom is a great idea. When you add square footage onto a home, you are making a great investment. Most homeowners are happy to have an additional bedroom, because in reality, it can work for many purposes, including a den, office, guest bedroom, or hobby space.

Renovations to Avoid

Don?t bother creating a permanent home office. Even though more people are working from home, they often don?t use a designated space; rather, they combine it with a guest room or hobby room. If you put in office furniture, make sure it?s removable.

Sunrooms are also not popular, except possibly in regions where they can be used year-round. This is one addition that results in the lowest return on investment. Unless you?re installing one for your enjoyment and plan to stay in the house for several years, it will be a waste of money.

Now may be a good time to begin thinking about renovating your home, but only if you choose the right things to spend your money on. Make sure you are updating your home for the right reasons and choose the best project if you plan to sell.

Focus on the Family Community: Relationships and Marriage ...

I've been married to my husband now for 2 years. We dated for a very short time before we married and honestly never got to know each other very well. We both come from prior failed marriages and we really seemed to connect. He has been married once prior and I have been married more than once prior. His ex wife was unfaithful and my ex husband [not my daughter's father] was abusive. With that being said, we have a blended family with his teenage son and my daughter who is a pre teen. He is a good deal older than I am but I didn't see our age as an issue at first. I thought his being "more settled" would be a good thing for me, considering things I have been through in the past years.? When we met and started talking He was kind and caring and seemed to be a Godly man when we began dating. Over the course of the past 2 years however, his character has made me question who I married.

?

In the beginning of our marriage, he constantly called me by his ex wife's name, in very inappropriate times, as well as around church friends[very humiliating], and also while sleeping. He would tell her in his sleep, while calling her full name, that he was so in love with her. He has called me her name many times in the course of our marriage. It hurt deeply in the beginning, and now I just don't know how to feel or respond anymore. He doesn't call me by her name so much anymore, but he simply forgets or has to stop and think of my name.

?

I haven't been happy since we got married. I care alot for him, but I don't love him.I have tried so hard to be submissive and be the Godly wife I am suppose to be, but my heart and my insides are so miserable and unhappy. My joy is gone and I have been full of energy and joy all of my life. But this has taken all of my joy. He has a haughty, arrogant and very critical personality that I didn't see until after we were married and he is very critical of others. It don't matter if they are rich or poor, he always has something to say or pity about others. He prays over me all of the time, which was a wonderful thing when we started out, but over the course of our relationship I have discerned so much insincere prayer and more of the things that he does are for show than they are real. It breaks my heart because I don't want to feel this way and I want to feel the way I should feel but his character disturbs me. My daughter asked me recently to think about one thing about him that I can see that is real. I'm not sure that there is anything I can name, that I feel he is sincere about.? It has come to the point that I cannot stand to be around him and we are currently separated. . He always looks down on my family and all but pities the mis fortunes of my family or others who don't have a lot. He always has to be noticed or praised when he does things, whether it be work, housework, deeds, tithes and even prayer. When he prays for me while I am sleeping, he often wakes me to make sure i heard him, or he asks me later in the day, if i didn't hear him praying. When he is in another room, he is often grumbling about things under his breath and fussing about all the duties he has to take care of, but then sarcastically talks about how God gave him that job.? He builds himself up talks about how important he is, and how important all of the things he does are. He uses very sophisticated words all the time and is constantly making everyone around him, including myself and my daughter, feel as though we are dumb and under him. He is very smart in many areas and he uses that over and against people because he thinks he knows more than everyone else. He takes credit for things he doesn't do and he fakes things alot when it comes to worship, and prayer and things he should not be faking. I come from years in a very spiritual church setting, so as I say this I pray it don't sound horrible but he is extremely overly spiritual. He overly spiritualizes everything. I feel most of the time that he doesn't know how to be or act normal and just enjoy living and being with his family.

?

He is always uptight, and always too serious.

He is also EXTREMELY sarcastic in everything he says and does. This is where most of the criticism comes in.

He came from a rough childhood and as an adult he took on a different quality of life for himself and became a business man so to speak. He made very good money and was in a well respected position on his job. At this time he was not in church and was far away from God, involving himself in worldly pleasures, money, sex, alcohol and witchcraft. He lived this lifestyle for quite some time.At some point during all of this, he lost his good paying job due a conflict that was his fault.

He changed jobs and had already been on the new job some time before he and I got together.

When he and I got together, his job closed down, so he changed jobs again and this job he has had since the beginning of our relationship has been a high stress, demanding job and he was a supervisor. We have prayed and prayed over the past year or so that God would do something because he hated his job. Recently he was offered a job close to home as opposed to the job he was driving an hour for, and this new job is a very well paid position in management. We thought this job was an answered prayer, a God send! I feel like it could have been a huge blessing for our family, until it started changing him even more.

Since he has been on the new job, his attitude about himself has become even more self centered and he constantly talks about how important he is now, and that he is a "higher up" or "one of the big guys" and "right up there on the top". He boasts constantly and is always talking about his important meetings and how HE is the ONLY one who was qualified and knew the job like he does, and is the only one who is capable of doing what he does.He has even insulted the man who offered and gave him his position. He brags that the company values him more than they did the man who left the job for another [giving him the position]. I want to be proud of him, and happy for him and to be able to build him up, but I cannot encourage this behavior. It is not right, and I certainly don't feel that it is Godly.

?

I left before for about 2 weeks and stayed with parents due to most of the same issues, plus some others,? and we talked alot, and I went back home and we talked about all of the things that are wrong, and needed attention, but none of it has improved or changed and he seems as though he is set in his ways and unconcerned to address issues that need addressing, nor does he seem concerned with being serious about "homework" or "assignments" given by our pastor & his wife who have been counceling us.

?

Since my leaving recently, we have barely talked. He didn't try to communicate with me after my leaving, but he has channeled most everything through our counselors[pastor & his wife] and the pastor's wife has contacted me a few times to encourage me to go back home, yet my husband hasn't asked me to come home.

The few times he has messaged me , have been very "short & professional" not personal at all, nor any attempt to ask or talk to me about what is wrong or discussing our problems. He has made no effort to ask me to come home, or to try to fix any of it.

?

I don't want to go home & I'm unsure how to react or respond from this point.

It seems stale, cold & I don't think he is very concerned that I am not there.

?

There are so many things I am leaving untouched, but this is lengthy enough, I don't want to sound like a complaining, nagging wife or mother. I'm not. I have tried so hard. I try to be quiet and humble and I want to be the woman I am suppose to be, and honor the Lord. I know some of these things sound trivial, but other things are things I cannot deal with.

There are other issues that are very concerning as well, that I feel stem from maybe the witchcraft that he messed with. I'm not sure how to deal with those situations as they concern me in a deeper way and worry me for my daughter's safety. She or I are neither one comfortable around him most of the time Those are issues that I ask for prayer on, and are not meant to post here but need prayer!!!. I don't know what to do. Our family is not a family at all.? I don't like living this way, and I cannot live in constant anxiety and fear. I don't want to go back, and I pray for God's wisdom and for his direction and any sound advice I can get is helpful. Thanks in Advance.

Jesse & Joy take 4 Latin Grammys, Juanes wins too

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? As Colombian rockero Juanes took home the best album award, Mexican brother-sister duo Jesse & Joy and their pop hit "Corre!" ran away with four awards at the 13th Annual Latin Grammys.

Hosted by actors Cristian De La Fuente and Lucero, Thursday night's event attracted stars from across the world and from dozens of Latin musical genres to the Mandalay Bay Events Center. Just like at a big family party, new faces shared the spotlight with older generations, and traditional styles mixed with electronica and Vegas dancers on stage.

Traditional Mexico met Las Vegas in a colorful number featuring Oaxaca native Lila Downs, Afro-Colombian singer Toto la Momposina and dancers in regional costumes, Carnival masques and skeleton makeup.

"What a great joy. Thank God, and all the fans," Juanes said as he dragged Dominican mereguero Juan Luis Guerra, who produced "MTV Unplugged," to the stage to accept the mini-gramaphone for best album at the close of the ceremony.

The winner for best new artist, the Mexican DJ trio 3ball MTY, threw down beats with America Sierra and Sky Blu of LMFAO. Pitbull performed "Don't Stop the Party" with dancers in gold spangled bikinis and hot pants. Juanes jammed with legendary guitarist Carlos Santana.

Michel Telo, the Brazilian sertanejo or country music singer, performed his hit, "Ai si eu te pego,"with Blue Man Group. Bachata heartthrob Prince Royce sang with veteran Mexican singer-songwriter Joan Sebastian. But the applause was also strong for the 1980s hit, "Yo No Te Pido la Luna," a duet between Spaniard Sergio Dalma and Mexican singer Daniela Romo, sporting a short silver hairdo following her bout with breast cancer.

Jesse & Joy also won for best contemporary pop vocal album for "Con Quien se Queda el Perro" and best short video for "Me voy."

"Thanks to people like Juanes and Juan Luis Guerro who have inspired us. Love and peace," Jesse said.

Guerra, who came into the ceremony as the leading nominee with six bids, won producer of the year for Juanes' album "MTV Unplugged."

Guerra performed "En el Cielo No Hay Hospital," which brought the audience to its feet to dance, and for a standing ovation.

Puerto Rican reggaeton singer Don Omar and Uruguayan alt rockers Cuarteto de Nos won two Latin Grammys each.

Downs won best folkloric album for "Pecados y Milagros." Colombian singer Fonseca won for best tropical fusion album, and Los Tucanes de Tijuana won best norteno album for "365 Dias," the narco-corrido band's 32nd album.

Milly Quezada brought home two statuettes, including best contemporary tropical album for "Aqui estoy yo."

"Long live merengue! Long live the Dominican Republic!" she said as she accepted the award. She also thanked Guerra, who helped produce the album.

Cuban-American jazz trumpeter Arturo Sandoval won three Latin Grammys, two for "Dear Diz (Every Day I Think of You)," but said these awards was just exciting as his first.

"The emotion is the same because one puts the same effort into each recording and the fact that the work is received well and respected by the public is very satisfying," he said.

The Latin Grammy celebration kicked off Wednesday with a tribute to Person of the Year winner, Caetano Veloso, one of the founders of the Tropicalismo movement.

The Brazilian singer, composer and activist sang in Spanish and Portuguese before Pitbull and Sensato closed with "Crazy People."

The event was broadcast live on Univision.

Soyuz 2-1A launches latest Meridian satellite for the Russian military ...

November 14th, 2012 by William Graham

A Soyuz-2-1a/Fregat rocket has launched a communications satellite for the Russian military on Wednesday. The rocket, carrying the latest Meridian spacecraft, lifted off from pad 43/4 at the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in northern Russia, at 11:42 UTC on Wednesday. Spacecraft separation was successfully carried out at 14:00 UTC.

Soyuz 2-1A Launch:

The Meridian satellite is the fifth in a series of Meridian satellites which are being launched by Russia. Meridian is a system of military communications satellites which are intended to replace the ageing Molniya system.

The?previous Meridan ? which was set to be the fifth ? was lost during launch at the end of last year.

Meridian satellites are manufactured by ISS Reshetnev, based around a pressurised bus similar to that used for GLONASS-M satellites. It has also been speculated that some subsystems used on GLONASS satellites is also used on Meridian.

The Molniya system, which Meridian will replace, was initially developed in the early 1960s to demonstrate the use of satellites to relay military communications. Molniya satellites operated in highly elliptical semi-synchronous orbits which became known as Molniya orbits after the satellites which used them.

In addition to military communications the satellites were also used for television broadcasting, as part of the Orbita network.

The first launch of a Molniya satellite occurred on 4 June 1964, however it failed to achieve orbit after a throttle on the core stage jammed. At the time Western analysts suspected that the launch had been an unsuccessful attempt to send a Zond probe to the moon. The second Molniya satellite, Kosmos 41, did not fare much better; it reached orbit but its communication antennae failed to deploy.

One hundred Molniya-1 series satellites were launched between 1964 and 2004, with ninety four entering service; of the remaining six, three failed immediately after launch, two failed to achieve orbit, and one was placed into an unusable orbit. In the mid 1970s, after twenty to thirty launches, the modernised Molniya-1T configuration replaced the original design.

Eight Molniya-1 satellites were operational at any given time, orbiting in four planes offset in ninety degree increments, each containing two operational satellites.

Between 1971 and 1977, nineteen Molniya-2 satellites were launched as part of the YeSSS unified communications system to broadcast telegraph, telephone and radio transmissions for the military. Molniya-2 used a series of spacecraft which had originally been developed to replace the Molniya-1 system, however it was found that the operational system was working well enough that it did not need to be replaced.

In addition to Molniya-2, YeSSS also included geostationary Raduga satellites. Two spacecraft, Kosmos 837 and Kosmos 853, were lost in back-to-back launch failures; both being placed into unusable orbits after upper stage failures. Molniya-2 followed the same deployment pattern as Molniya-1, with eight satellites in four planes.

Molniya-3 satellites, which were launched between 1974 and 2005, were originally a civilian system consisting of four satellites, and being used primarily for Orbita television broadcasting. In the early 1980s the number of operational satellites was increased to eight, and the system replaced Molniya-2 as part of YeSSS.

Fifty six satellites were launched, including two modernised Molniya-3K spacecraft. Two of the standard Molniya-3 satellites, Kosmos 1175 and 1305, were launched into unusable orbits.

The last launch of a Molniya satellite occurred on 21 June 2005, when a Molniya-M/ML lifted off from Plesetsk carrying the second Molniya-3K satellite. The rocket failed to achieve orbit, with subsequent analysis showing that the upper stage had shut down immediately after ignition, and that it had not separated from the rocket.

Molniya satellites were originally launched using the Molniya carrier rocket, which was named after them. It was an R-7 series rocket with a Blok-L upper stage.

From 1966 the upgraded Molniya-M rocket, with a Blok-ML upper stage, was used instead. A single Molniya-1S satellite, launched in 1974 and operated in a geostationary orbit instead of an elliptical one, flew aboard a Proton-K rocket with a Blok-DM upper stage.

Mirroring the two failures at the start of the Molniya programme, the Meridian programme also had a fairly troubled start. The first satellite failed within two and a half years of reaching orbit, and the second never entered service following a launch failure.

Meridian-1, which was launched on 24 December 2006 and entered service on 1 February 2007. By May 2009 it was reported to be inoperable, with the manufacturer claiming that the failure was the result of an impact from orbital debris.

On 21 May 2009 the second satellite was launched, however due to a programming error the Fregat burned fuel at a faster rate than expected and cut off prematurely during its second burn. The payload was left in a lower than planned orbit, however it was initially expected to be able to correct this under its own power. It was later discovered that it could not correct its own orbit, and the launch was declared a failure.

The third Meridian satellite was launched on 2 November 2010. It successfully reached orbit and began operations. After the launch, the Soyuz-2-1a rocket was declared operational and accepted into military service. The fourth was also a success, prior to the fifth launch, which also failed.

The Soyuz-2-1A rocket which was used to launch the Meridian-4 satellite was manufactured by TsSKB-Progress, and is a descendent of the R-7 Semyorka, the world?s first intercontinental ballistic missile. The R-7 was designed by Sergei Korolev, and first flew in 1957. A modified version was used to launch the first satellite, Sputnik 1, on 4 October of that year.

The R-7 formed the basis for the Luna, Vostok, Voskhod, Molniya and Soyuz families of rockets, and to date all Soviet and Russian manned spaceflights have been launched using rockets derived from the R-7. The Soyuz, which first flew in 1966, was a modification of the Voskhod rocket featuring an upgraded and lighter telemetry system, and more fuel efficient engines.

It was initially used to launch only Soyuz spacecraft; however with the introduction of the Soyuz-U in 1973 it began to launch other satellites as well.

The Soyuz-U, which remains in service, is the most-flown orbital launch system ever developed, having made around 750 flights to date, plus around 90 more in the Soyuz-U2 configuration optimised to use synthetic propellant.

The Soyuz-2 was developed from the older Soyuz models, and features digital flight control systems and modernised engines. It first flew in 2004, and this is its twelfth launch. Two variants are currently in service; the Soyuz-2-1a used to launch Meridian-4, and the Soyuz-2-1b which features an RD-0124 third stage engine which provides additional thrust. The RD-0124 was declared operational on 3 May 2011.

A third configuration, the Soyuz-2-1v, is currently under development and is soon expected to make its maiden flight. It features an NK-33 engine in place of the RD-108A used on the core stages of the other configurations, and does not include the strapon boosters used by other configurations. Exclusive documentation on this vehicle is available in L2 ? LINK.

The core stage of the Soyuz-2, the Blok-A, is powered by a single RD-108A engine. This is augmented for the first two minutes of flight by four boosters, each of which is powered by an RD-107A engine.

The numbering of the stages of Russian rockets differs from Western systems, with the boosters being numbered as stage one, the core, the Blok-A stage two, the stage atop that stage three, with the upper stage, in this case a Fregat, being considered the fourth stage.

The third stage of the Soyuz-2 is a Blok-I, which is powered by an RD-0110 engine. The first three stages all burn RP-1 propellant oxidised by liquid oxygen.

The fourth stage, the Fregat, is powered by an S5.98M engine, which uses unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine as propellant and nitrogen tetroxide as an oxidiser. The Fregat first flew in 2000, and has been used on Soyuz-U, Soyuz-FG, Soyuz-2 and Zenit rockets.

Seventeen seconds before launch, the first and second stage engines ignited, and began to build up to full thrust. When the countdown reached zero, four swing arms holding the rocket in place fell back, and the vehicle began to climb away from Plesetsk. Around 118 seconds after launch, when the rocket reaches a predetermined velocity, the four boosters were be jettisoned.

About 288 seconds after launch the Blok-I ignited, and two seconds later it separated from the Blok-A. The Blok-I burned for around 240 seconds, propelling the upper stage and spacecraft onto a suborbital trajectory. Then, eight minutes and forty six second after launch, the Fregat separated from the Blok-I, and ignited a minute later for a twenty three second burn to insert the spacecraft into a low circular parking orbit.

After reaching the parking orbit, the Fregat coasted for thirty five minutes and forty two seconds, before igniting for its second burn. This burn lasted ten minutes and eight seconds, taking the spacecraft most of the way to its final orbit.

This was then followed by another coast phase, lasting eighty minutes and forty four seconds, after which the engine ignited again to perform a third burn. This burn lasted thirty five seconds, and raised the perigee of the orbit.

Spacecraft separation was on schedule thirty seconds after the completion of this burn. Thirty minutes later the Fregat made a 36-second disposal burn to separate its orbit from that of its payload.

Meridian was launched from Pad 43/4 at the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in northern Russia. Plesetsk is Russia?s main military launch site, and pad 43/3 is one of four R-7 launch complexes at the site.

The other complexes are 41/1, 16/2 and 43/3. Pad 41/1 was last used in 1989 and has since been disassembled; pad 16/2 is currently used for Soyuz-U launches and was also used by the Molniya-M until its retirement last year, and pad 43/3 has not been used since 2002. All four pads were built in the 1960s for operational deployment of R-7 missiles.

The first launch from pad 43/4 took place on 25 July 1967, when an R-7A missile made an operational test flight. With the retirement of the R-7 from service as a missile soon after, pad 43/4 was subsequently used by Voskhod, Molniya-M, Vostok-2M and Soyuz-U rockets carrying payloads for the Russian military.

On 18 March 1980, a Vostok-2M rocket exploded during fuelling ahead of the launch of a Tselina-D signals intelligence satellite. The accident killed 48 people, and caused damage to the launch pad that took three years to repair.

Following a Molniya-M launch in 2001, Pad 43/4 was taken out of service and upgraded to accommodate the Soyuz-2, which performed its maiden flight from the complex in 2004.
