Egypt's Coptic church chooses new pope

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's ancient Coptic Christian church named a new pope on Sunday, chosen in an elaborate ceremony where a blindfolded boy drew the name of the next patriarch from a crystal chalice.

Bishop Tawadros will be ordained Nov. 18 as Pope Tawadros II. He will be the spiritual leader of a community that increasingly fears for its future amid the rise of Islamists to power in the aftermath of last year's uprising.

Many Copts, estimated to make up 10 percent of the country's 83 million people, will look to Tawadros to fill a void in leadership following the death of Pope Shenouda III, who led the church for 40 years. Shenouda's death at the of 88 this year heightened the sense of insecurity felt by many who had known him as patriarch for all or most of their lives.

But some critics of Shenouda's papal style ? to act as an intermediary for Copts with the state ? hope the change will usher in a patriarch who is head of the church but not necessarily a political leader of the community.

Egypt's Coptic Christians have long complained of discrimination by the state and the country's Muslim majority. Clashes with Muslims have occasionally broken out, often sparked by church construction, land disputes or Muslim-Christian love affairs.

The prospects of a stronger role for Islamic law in legislation increase the community's concern of further marginalization, or of curtailing their rights of worship and expression.

"We will pray that God will choose the good shepherd," acting Pope Pachomios told the packed Cairo cathedral as he sealed the chalice with three names inside with red wax before laying it on the altar during Mass.

All three senior clerics whose names were in the chalice were considered consensus candidates who stayed out of disputes both within the church and with other groups, including Islamists.

There was a moment of silence before the drawing by the blindfolded boy, an act believed to reflect God's will in the choice.

Amid heavy police security around the Cairo cathedral, thousands of worshippers erupted in applause, tears and prayer when his name was announced.

"I hope the new pope will listen to the youth of our community," 20 year-old engineering student Kirolos Zakaria said.

Zakaria, like others, said he wants the Christian community in Egypt to participate more in politics, but he wants the pope to refrain from getting engaged.

Volunteering at the Mass, 27 year-old Peter Nasser said he hopes the new pope will raise the profile of Christians in Egypt.

"The situation for us in Egypt is not stable," he said. "We hope the incoming pope will make our problems known to the outside world."

Nasser said he believes that the current government, led by President Mohammed Morsi of the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood, does not work in the interest of all Egyptians and discriminates against minorities.

The Brotherhood and its leader, Mohammed Badie, congratulated the church and Tawadros in statements on Sunday.

Tawadros faces tremendous challenges as the country's transition to democracy is marred by a deep rift between increasingly politically powerful Islamist groups, from which the country's new president hails, and the liberal and secularist groups who were initially behind the revolt that ousted Mubarak last year.

At the center of the political squabbling in Egypt is the role of Islam in the country's new constitution, currently being drafted. The Christians, along with liberal and secularists, oppose demands by Islamists to increase the role of Islamic Shariah law. The prospects of a stronger role for Islamic law in legislation increase the community's concern of further marginalization, or of curtailing of their rights of worship and expression.

Morsi has named a number of Christians as advisors and vowed to work closely with the community, but Christians are skeptical. Late Saturday, Pachomios said during a popular TV program on the private station al-Nahar that Christians have never held senior state posts or leading positions such as university deans in Egypt's modern history. He also insisted there be no clause in the constitution allowing state monitoring of the church's finances, a demand often made by Islamists.

Sunday's papal election comes during a shift in Christian attitudes toward their relation to the state. For years, Christians largely relied on the church to secure protection for their rights, using former Pope Shenouda's close relationship with authoritarian President Hosni Mubarak.

But even with that relationship, Copts continued to face attacks from radical Islamists, and local disputes with their neighbors sometimes flared into deadly violence. Rights groups say Mubarak's police were lax in pursuing and punishing offenders. Few Copts were named to genuinely powerful posts in government.

On New Year's Eve 2011, the bombing of a Mass in Alexandria killed 21 people ? the worst attack against Copts in at least a decade. No suspects are currently in custody in relation to the attack.

In October 2011, after Mubarak's ouster, soldiers drove armored vehicles into a crowd in Cairo protesting the country's transitional military rulers' failure to protect Copts. Twenty-six people, mostly Copts, were killed.

Despite or perhaps because of the Copts' uneasy status, Shenouda had longstanding critics within the community who asked why a cleric should act as an intermediary between them and the state. Others said that he was too close to the former regime and did not take strong enough stances. Following the uprising and the pope's death, more Copts, particularly the youth, have been emboldened to act outside the church to independently demand rights, better representation and freedom of worship.

According to Egypt's state-run MENA news agency, the new pope was born Wagih Sahby Baqi Soleiman. He is a former pharmacist who graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1975 from the main university in Egypt's northern coastal city of Alexandria before studying in England in 1985. He briefly managed a government-run pharmaceutical lab in Egypt until he went to a monastery in Wadi Natrun in 1986 where he studied religion for two years. He was ordained a priest in 1989.

Tawadros, whom MENA reported turned 60 the same day his name was selected to become Egypt's new pope, was formerly an aide to the acting pope.

The process of electing a new pope began weeks ago, when a committee from the church narrowed the list of potential candidates from 17 down to five monks and bishops. On Monday, about 2,400 clergymen and church notables drew up a short list of three that also included Bishop Raphael, 54, once an aide to the late Pope Shenouda, and Father Raphael Ava Mina, the oldest among them at 70, a monk in a monastery near Alexandria and a student of the pope who preceded Shenouda.

MENA reported that Tawadros received more than 1,600 votes in Monday's shortlist voting.

None of the candidates attended the ceremony, and are instead praying in their respective monasteries. MENA says church leaders will head to Tawadros's retreat in the monastery complex of Wadi Natrun northeast of Cairo to congratulate him.

2012 Election: Minorities Donating Little To Presidential Races

WASHINGTON ? Americans living in predominantly wealthy, white neighborhoods account for nearly all the sizable campaign contributions in this year's presidential election, according to an Associated Press analysis, even as the presidential candidates have aggressively courted Hispanics. Latino voters are widely viewed as pivotal for victories in some battleground states Tuesday.

The disparity in donating particularly affects Latinos. About 16 percent of the U.S. population is Hispanic, but not even 4 percent of the more than $1.3 billion in 3 million-plus itemized contributions came from mostly Hispanic neighborhoods this year, the AP's analysis showed. More than 90 percent came from majority white neighborhoods.

Hispanics, by at least this important measure of contributing to a candidate whose views they support, are remarkably disengaged in the election yet represent a significant ethnic group for President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney.

"The hardest part is the economic sacrifice," said Roland Garcia, director of the Texas Future Fund, who helped raise money for Obama. "Latino families are busy trying to make ends meet."

Even among the poorest neighborhoods, non-Hispanics contributed far more regularly to the campaigns and the political groups that supported them. The trend similarly holds true for campaign contributions from mostly black, Asian or Native American neighborhoods.

Hispanics, the largest minority bloc, are emerging as a constituency that could determine the presidency, especially in Colorado, Florida, Nevada, North Carolina and Virginia. Obama and Romney have heavily courted the Latino vote and devoted time to discuss immigration policy at the town-hall presidential debate in October.

A hotel manager in Laredo, Texas, Raul Perales, said he gave $5,000 to Romney after a lunch with the former Massachusetts governor in San Antonio. Other donors he knows won't stretch their finances for any politician.

"It doesn't suit anyone to give more than they can afford," he said. "That would be nonsense."

The AP analysis did not consider the sources of contributions of $200 or less per person because, under federal law, political groups are not required to disclose any identifying information about such donors, even their names. About 65 percent of donors supporting Obama gave more than $200, compared with 85 percent for Romney.

These donors, including "bundlers" who raise hundreds of thousands of dollars, are most likely to receive invitations to lavish donor parties, state dinners at the White House or policy briefings with senior advisers.

Differences in income may contribute to the disparity.

Median household income for Hispanics was $37,759, but for non-Hispanic whites it was $54,620, according to 2010 census figures. Minorities also have unemployment rates above the national average of 8 percent. Some Latino immigrants regularly send money home to their families.

Both parties have made significant efforts to reach out to minority groups. But the AP's analysis confirmed a pattern, first reported in 2004 by researchers at Public Campaign, a Washington-based, nonprofit group that supports election changes: A tiny fraction of contributions worth $200 or more coming from nonwhite communities.

"The most important voice is the vote, and financial contributions come in second," said Arturo Vargas, director of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials. "Not being a major source of financial contributions and not having a tradition of contributing to candidates complicates our development as a political community. Even if the candidates deny it, the reality is that donors are those who enjoy the best access to candidates."

The AP analyzed contributions to candidates' official campaigns, their political parties and "super" political committees that support them. Federal data do not include demographic information about donors, so the AP mapped donor addresses with demographic data for each census block. That's the smallest geographic area that the federal government measures, roughly the size of a neighborhood. That helped identify what donors were most likely to be Hispanic.

Donations from majority Hispanic neighborhoods account for only 3.5 percent of itemized donations through mid-October. That correlates with about 2.7 percent from majority black neighborhoods and less than 1 percent from Asian communities.

The gap is even greater among neighborhoods with fewer whites. About 2 percent, or $26 million, of the contributions came from neighborhoods in which 75 percent of residents identified themselves in the 2010 census as Hispanic.

Developmental bait and switch

Saturday, November 3, 2012

During the early developmental stages of vertebrates?animals that have a backbone and spinal column, including humans?cells undergo extensive rearrangements, and some cells migrate over large distances to populate particular areas and assume novel roles as differentiated cell types. Understanding how and when such cells switch their purpose in an embryo is an important and complex goal for developmental biologists. A recent study, led by researchers at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), provides new clues about this process?at least in the case of neural crest cells, which give rise to most of the peripheral nervous system, to pigment cells, and to large portions of the facial skeleton.

"There has been a long-standing mystery regarding why some cells in the developing embryo start out as part of the future central nervous system, but leave to populate peripheral parts of the body," says Marianne Bronner, the Albert Billings Ruddock Professor of Biology at Caltech and corresponding author of the paper, published in the November 1 issue of the journal Genes & Development. "In this paper, we find that an important type of enzyme called DNA-methyltransferase, or DNMT, acts as a switch, determining which cells will remain part of the central nervous system, and which will become neural crest cells."

According to Bronner, DNMT arranges this transition by silencing expression of the genes that promote central nervous system (CNS) identity, thereby giving the cells the green light to become neural crest, migrate, and do new things, like help build a jaw bone. The team came to this conclusion after analyzing the actions of one type of DNMT?DNMT3A?at different stages of development in a chicken embryo.

This is important, says Bronner, because while most scientists who study the function of DNMTs use embryonic stem cells that can be maintained in culture, her team is "studying events that occur in living embryos as opposed to cells grown under artificial conditions," she explains.

"It is somewhat counterintuitive that this kind of shutting off of genes is essential for promoting neural crest cell fate," she says. "Embryonic development often involves switches in the types of inputs that a cell receives. This is an example of a case where a negative factor must be turned off?essentially a double negative?in order to achieve a positive outcome."

Bronner says it was also surprising to see that an enzyme like DNMT has such a specific function at a specific time. DNMTs are sometimes thought to act in every cell, she says, yet the researchers have discovered a function for this enzyme that is exquisitely controlled in space and time.

"It is amazing how an enzyme, at a given time point during development, can play such a specific role of making a key developmental decision within the embryo," says Na Hu, a graduate student in Bronner's lab and lead author of the paper. "Our findings can be applied to stem cell therapy, by giving clues about how to engineer other cell types or stem cells to become neural crest cells."

Bronner points out that their work relates to the discovery, which won a recent Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology, that it is possible to "reprogram" cells taken from adult tissue. These induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells are similar to embryonic stem cells, and many investigators are attempting to define the conditions needed for them to differentiate into particular cell types, including neural crest derivatives.

"Our results showing that DNMT is important for converting CNS cells to neural crest cells will be useful in defining the steps needed to reprogram such iPS cells," she says. "The iPS cells may in turn be useful for repair in human diseases such as familial dysautonomia, a disease in which there is depletion of autonomic and sensory neurons that are neural crest?derived; for repair of jaw bones lost in osteonecrosis; and for many other potential treatments."

In the short term, the team will explore the notion that DNMT enzymes may have different functions in the embryo at different places and times. That's why the next step in their research, says Bronner, is to examine the later role of these enzymes in nervous-system development, like whether or not they effect the length of time during which the CNS is able to produce neural crest cells.

Gortkelly Jolly, in red jacket, geared up to thrive in William Hill - Home Of Betting at Sunderland

Wearing red jersey, Gortkelly Jolly is all set to build on her fresh success. There is nothing wrong with her present rhythm, and an excellent effort on her part is expected in William Hill - Home Of Betting, a 450 metres Grade A2 meeting, taking place at Sunderland on Friday, November 2nd.

After going through an unlucky spell, the black and white bitch unchained the shackles in style last time. She started her run brilliantly from the red box, and an outstanding beginning helped her lead in the early stages.

The dashing bitch made no mistake after getting her head in front. She maintained the highest standards, and eventually captured the first position by five and a half lengths. After such a dominating act, the daughter of Cabra Cool is fully pumped. The draw is also in her favour.

With plenty in favour, the G. Lynas-trained is in a great position to demonstrate a splendid effort in today?s crucial meeting. As per the schedule, the contest will be initiated at 22:03 GMT. A cash prize of 127 pounds will be given to the winner at end of the race.

Gortkelly Jolly is due to face five speedy hounds. Their names are: Deancroft Jack, Gaytime Roxy, Smile Coming, Tullymurry Radar and Ballyridge Blue. An intense battle is on the cards, because every hound is raring to go.

Smile Coming has a shout for sure. However, we expect the bitch to run well only in defeat. Gaytime Roxy tends to find share of the trouble. This would certainly not be easy for her.

It will be something of a surprise if Ballyridge Blue picks up the gold. Deancroft Jack?s case for the top prize is also not strong. But if he succeeds in doing something special early on, the situation will be different altogether. Tullymurry Radar is in good rhythm after a couple of wins. But remember, stepping up in grade applies some pressure.

As far as the stats are concerned, no one looks to be in a good position to trouble Gortkelly Jolly. So, the punters don?t need to try different things. Good luck to all.

Employment data unlikely to sway voters

57 min.

If some voters haven't decided who to choose as the leader of the free world next Tuesday, the latest jobs data isn't likely to help them much.

Friday's employment report showed another month of steady but slow improvement in the job market: not too hot, not too cold, but not right enough to put a big dent in unemployment. More crucial to many?voters likely will be how the federal government responds to the disaster caused by Superstorm Sandy.

Payrolls expanded by 171,000 jobs last month, the Labor Department said, more than the 125,000 forecast by economists. The government also said 84,000 more jobs were created in August and September than initially estimated.

But the unemployment rate rose to 7.9 percent from 7.8 percent in September, largely because more workers who had given up looking for a job?decided to resume their searches. The Labor Department only counts people who are looking for?work as unemployed.

The jobs report is President Barack?Obama's last report card for his efforts to get the economy moving again and create jobs for millions?of Americans still sidelined by the worst recession in a half century. The feeble recovery?? both its causes and the candidates? proposals to accelerate it ? have dominated the campaign.

But because the numbers are roughly consistent with other recent reports, the news?isn't?expected to sway many voters.

?We doubt that October's employment report is either strong enough or weak enough to have any marked impact on next week's presidential election,? said economist Paul Ashworth of?Capital Economics.

The report contained information that both?campaigns can use. Upward revisions to earlier reports show that ?the economy has created an average of 173,000 jobs a month since July. That's up sharply from from a pace of 67,000 a month from April through June. That acceleration tends to support Obama?s contention that the economy is on the mend.

?We see a picture of an economy that?s healing,? said White House chief economist Alan Krueger, shortly after the numbers were released. ?So we?re moving in the right direction, and what we need to do is build on this progress."

The uptick in the?jobless rate, which most voters consider a proxy for the job market?outlook, could? help bolster Romney?s argument that the White House?hasn't?done enough to boost job growth.?

"Today's increase in the unemployment rate is a sad reminder that the economy is at a virtual standstill," Romney said in a statement on the jobs data.?

Also, with so many people looking for work, employers have been able to hold back raises.?The latest numbers show that workers' paychecks continue to fall behind the inflation rate.

Over the past 12 months, hourly earnings for all workers are up just 1.6 percent, the lowest on records dating to early 2007. A measure with a longer track record that covers only production and non-supervisory employees was up only 1.1 percent -- the lowest on records dating to 1964

Balanced against that are other data, which have shown the economy picking up strength in the second half of the year. Consumers are spending more on big-ticket items, like cars and appliances, for example.

"House prices are rising and consumer confidence has finally picked itself off the floor. Both the retail and construction sectors piled on jobs in October, hinting at a return of business optimism," said Marcus Ballus, trading director at MB Capital in London. "But there is continued weakness in America's manufacturing sector, and there is still no sense of inevitability about the recovery."?

Obama will wind up his campaign with the highest unemployment rate of any incumbent since Franklin Roosevelt ? a rate that is also slightly higher than when he took office.

?The jobless rate is higher than it was when President Obama took office, and there are still 23 million Americans struggling for work," Romney said.?

That number ? the broadest measure of unemployment that the Labor Department calls ?U6? ? includes people out of work, those who?ve given up looking and part-time workers who want a full-time job but can?t find one. That wider jobless rate has also shown improvement, falling from 16.0 percent a year ago to 14.6 percent last month.

Even as the pace of job growth picked up in the second half of the year, the outlook for the economy has become cloudier. Much of the uncertainty comes from the looming package of tax hikes and spending cuts that take effect at the start of next year

Unless revised or postponed, the tax hikes and spending cuts will almost certainly push the economy back into recession, most economists say. As a result, companies are reluctant to hire many?new workers until it becomes clear how that budget impasse will be resolved.

Neither candidate has proposed a specific plan to break the political stalemate over the ?fiscal cliff? in the next two months. ?

Longer term, both have pledged to cut swollen federal deficits. Those pledges are popular with U.S. voters, but?both candidates? budget proposals could weaken the economy. As debt-laden European countries have demonstrated, cutting spending and raising taxes too quickly creates a major drag on growth.

Obama has said that wealthier taxpayers need to pay ?their fair share,? an increase that would reduce the amount of money available for spending and investment. If re-elected, the president also is?widely expected to allow a two-year-old payroll tax cut to?expire. That would raise taxes on all wage earners, further cutting into spending.

Romney has proposed cutting federal government spending sharply to a target of 20 percent of gross domestic product by 2016. That pace of budget-cutting would also produce a drag on growth, economists say.

With millions of households and businesses without power after a monster storm slammed into the East Coast Monday, Friday?s jobs report is also expected to be overshadowed by the ongoing fallout from Superstorm Sandy. For better or worse, the Obama administration?s response to the disaster will likely have a greater impact on the few remaining undecided voters who haven?t made up their minds.

?The three people that are still undecided in the United States about this election were not waiting for the jobs number,? said James Nussle, a former budget official in the George W. Bush administration.?

Sheryl Sandberg And Facebook Execs Sell Stock - Business Insider

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Facebook Inc Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg and two other executives at the social networking company sold millions of dollars worth of stock this week as restrictions on insider trading expired.

Sandberg netted about $7.44 million by selling roughly 353,000 Facebook shares on Wednesday, according to a filing with the SEC on Friday. Sandberg still owns roughly 20 million vested shares of Facebook stock, including shares held in her trusts, according to the filing.

Facebook General Counsel Theodore Ullyot and Chief Accounting Officer David Spillane also sold millions of dollars worth of shares this week, according to filings. All the Facebook executives' sales were part of pre-arranged stock trading plans.

The sales are the first by Facebook's senior management following the company's high-profile initial public offering in May.

The world's No.1 online social network became the only U.S. company to debut with a market value of more than $100 billion, but has seen its value plunge more than 40 percent since then on concerns about its long-term money-making prospects.

Shares of Facebook, which were priced at $38 in the IPO, closed Friday's regular session down 3 cents at $21.18.

The flood of shares set to hit the market as insider trading "lock-up" provisions expire in several phases have added to the pressure on Facebook's stock.

Roughly 230 million shares of Facebook became eligible for trading this week, as trading restrictions for employees expired. Another 800 million shares will be eligible for trading on November 14, significantly expanding the "float" of roughly 692 million Facebook shares that were available for trading as of September 30.

Facebook's 28-year-old chief executive, Mark Zuckerberg, has committed to not sell any shares before September 2013.

Ullyot sold slightly more than 149,000 shares on Wednesday and Thursday, collecting $3.13 million. Ullyot has an additional 1.27 million in vested shares.

Spillane sold 256,000 shares on Wednesday, more than half of his vested shares, for proceeds of $5.4 million. Spillane had more than 863,000 Facebook shares, including unvested shares, according to a filing in May.

The difference of only a few days?from October 27th, the Saturday before the storm, and this past Wednesday the 31st once refugees had relocated, is immense. Geek droves poured uptown and into Brooklyn, leaving the powerless stretch beneath 34th street appropriately bleak for Halloween. Now just wait until an even more impressive Foursquare map after a nuclear war or some viral outbreak. Even more dots!

Massachusetts May Soon Change How the Nation Dies

Yes and no. Most people are not medical experts and, shouldn't have to become so just to die with some dignity.

The thing is, what kills one person may not kill another and most things that you can eaisly get your hands on, and even most prescriptions, are within dosage ranges that are quite safe. Yes, you can kill yourself many ways, but, many of those ways are less effective than you might think.

I personally knew a guy who tried to off himself with barbituates. He failed, woke up several days later. This is actually fairly common with that route.

Also many terminally ill patients are in no condition to do that research and administer the drugs without help.

Which is why, I think we really need the second... Doctors able to help.

I plan to vote for this one. I have worked among the medical community (at MGH no less), I have been there when my family had to have stern words with doctors who somehow interpreted our grandfather's DNR order as "Recessitate and put on a ventilator".

This is such an important issue for so many reasons. So many people in ongoing pain that don't need to be, so many families that need to move on. I hate to bring it to money but.... 50% of health care costs are spent in the last 5 years of life.....and for what? The fact that so many doctors opt to not have chemo and opt to die rather than hang on like so many of their patients are made to should say something.

Don't get me wrong, if someone wants to fight to the biter end, and get as many waking moments as possible, regardless of their quality, more power to them. However, what compassion is there in forcing people to go on living who have nothing to look forward to except deterioration in a bed?

I honestly think Bill Hicks described the situation best in his comical suggestion that we use terminally ill people as stunt doubles in action films. "Do you want your grandmother to die in a sterile hospital bed, he translucent skin so thin you can see the last beat of her heart, or do you want her to meet Chuck Norris?.... wow Chuck just kicked her head clear off, my grandma is no longer in pain...this is the best movie ever!"
