Home of Loving Chaos: Coupon Crazy!!

I have officially gone coupon clipping CRAZY!!

I met this really nice woman in Walmart about a month ago and I applauded her on her "coupon book". I told her how I used to do the coupon thing, but I was lazy coupon-er and would just let them go to waste. She offered me some tips and I have been coupon crazy ever since!

I have spent hours online registering to different coupon & brand sites and printing coupons. You can even have some mailed directly to you. And yes, I have gone coupon shopping. Now I have my very own, very thick, coupon book. Most importantly, I USE IT!!

Living in the country, I do travel to shop. So I have to make sure to make every trip count. Although I love to shop at Walmart, they don't seem too big on coupon displays. I found great manufacturer's coupons at Sobey's, Shopper's Drug Mart, Co-op/Marketplace and Safeway. (*If you are a frequent Superstore/Loblaw shopper, their store is literally littered with short term store coupons that almost look like manufacturer coupons. If that's where you shop, it may be worth your while to devote a section of your coupon book to their coupons.)

I've printed coupons from WebSaver.ca and had Save.ca mail me coupons. I've registered for samples, freebies and discounts from Proctor & Gamble (the makers of Tide, Always, Crest...).

I've also found some pages worth liking on Facebook and I get a head's up on more great Canadian offers. Savealoonie.com and Mrsjanuary.com are a couple of REALLY good ones who are on Facebook and who also have websites.

That woman I met told me she saves about $500 a month with her coupon book and other money saving habits. Apart from being a mother of four, being a mother period made her coupon story very appealing to me. What mom wouldn't want to save money?

Thanks Ann.

Turkey's prime minister slams Security Council over Syria

ISTANBUL (AP) ? Turkey's prime minister sharply criticized the U.N. Security Council on Saturday for its failure to agree on decisive steps to end Syria's civil war, as NATO ally Germany backed the Turkish interception of a Damascus-bound passenger jet earlier in the week.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan told an international conference in Istanbul that the world was witnessing a humanitarian tragedy in Syria.

"If we wait for one or two of the permanent members ... then the future of Syria will be in danger," Erdogan said, according to an official interpreter.

Russia and China, two of the five permanent Security Council members, have vetoed resolutions that sought to put concerted pressure on Damascus to end the conflict and agree to a political transition.

Erdogan called for a reform of the Security Council, which he called an "unequal, unfair system" that didn't represent the will of most countries.

He spoke as Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu met with Arab and European leaders amid growing tensions between Turkey and neighboring Syria.

Davutoglu held talks Saturday with Arab League chief Nabil Elaraby, German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle and U.N. envoy on Syria Lakhdar Brahimi. He told reporters after the meetings that Turkey was prepared to use force again if it was attacked, just as it did last week when a shell fired across the border from Syria killed five Turkish villagers.

"If a similar incident occurs again from the Syrian side, we will again take counter action," Davutoglu told reporters, while stressing that the border between Syria and Turkey is also the frontier of NATO.

One week after the shelling, Turkey intercepted a Syrian passenger plane en route from Moscow to Damascus and seized what it said was military equipment on board.

Syria denounced the move as air piracy, while Russia said the cargo was radar parts that complied with international law.

Germany's foreign minister backed Turkey on Saturday, saying Berlin would have acted the same way if it believed weapons were being transported to Syria over its airspace.

"It's not just about weapons. Weapons need to be steered. Weapons need to be delivered," Westerwelle said. "These are all things that don't need to be tolerated."

But he cautioned the situation between Turkey and Syria could quickly escalate out of control.

"The danger of a 'wildfire' is very big," said Westerwelle, who also met briefly with Abdelbaset Sieda, head of the Syrian National Council opposition group. "If that happens, then this can become a devastating conflict for the whole region."

In Syria, activists said Saturday that army troops clashed with rebels on several fronts across the country, including in Aleppo, the largest city.

Amateur video posted online Saturday shows the aftermath of what is described as an artillery attack on a neighborhood in Aleppo. The video shows a large cloud of gray smoke pushing through a narrow street lined by apartment blocks. Residents then converge on a damaged building. "Is anyone in there?" one of the men is heard calling out as others try to put out small flames with pieces of cloth.

Eventually, rescuers are seen pulling at least two bodies out of the building. One has a bloody face, and another is carried away on a stretcher, amid shouts of "Allahu Akbar," or "God is Great.

The authenticity of such videos cannot be confirmed independently, since Syria imposes tight restrictions on foreign journalists.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an activist group, said at least two people were killed in the shelling.

Another amateur video posted Saturday showed the scattered, burning wreckage of what appeared to be an aircraft. Several gunmen stood near the debris, as civilians rushed to the scene. The narrator said video was shot in the countryside west of Aleppo.

Rami Abdul-Rahman, the head of the Observatory, said he was told by local rebel fighters in the area that they had shot down the plane. The video showed flames shooting out of what appeared to be left of a wing or tail, and other wreckage a few dozen yards away.

The claim could not be verified independently.

Opposition fighters have claimed to have shot down helicopters and warplanes in the past, although the regime blamed most of the problems on mechanical difficulties.

Over the past month, rebels overran two air defense bases, including one on Friday near Aleppo. This would give them access to heavy weapons, though experts questioned whether they would be able to make use of any missiles they may have spirited away.

More than 32,000 people have been killed in Syria since a revolt against President Bashar Assad erupted 19 months ago. Hundreds of thousands of Syrians have fled the fighting, which has devastated whole neighborhoods in Syria's cities and towns.

The Observatory, which relies on a network of activists on the ground, said regime forces were pounding the rebel stronghold of Homs in central Syria with mortar fire and artillery Saturday. The southern province of Daraa, the birthplace of the revolt, also sustained shelling by the Syrian army throughout Saturday. Fighting between army troops and rebels raged around Idlib province, in and around Aleppo and on the outskirts of the capital Damascus, the Observatory said.

Earlier, Syria's state-run news agency reported that Damascus supported a proposal by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to find a "mechanism of direct security communication between Syria and Turkey."

SANA reported that Syrian government officials and Russia's ambassador in Damascus discussed ways to establish a joint Syrian-Turkish security committee that would "control the security situation on both sides of the border in the framework of respecting the national sovereignty of the two countries."

Turkey has made no comment on the proposal, and it is unclear whether Moscow has presented it to the Turkish government yet.

War intensifies across Syria, refugee crisis deepens

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Rebels battled to hold onto Syria's main north-south highway on Friday as government forces fought insurgents on several fronts across the country.

The rebels captured an air defense base east of Syria's biggest city, Aleppo, and government forces unleashed air strikes and artillery bombardments on the western city of Homs, activists said.

On the Turkish-Syrian border, Turkey scrambled two fighter jets after a Syrian military helicopter bombed the Syrian border town of Azmarin, the site of fierce fighting between rebels and government forces this week.

Tensions between Ankara and Damascus are worsening at a time when the 19-month-old conflict is intensifying with no sign of a diplomatic breakthrough and growing concerns that the violence could spread across the Middle East.

The pro-opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights gave a death toll for Thursday of more than 260 people, including civilians and combatants on both sides, as fighting raged in the capital and the north, west and east of the country.

It said 92 soldiers had been killed on Thursday, one of the highest daily tolls on the government side since the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad broke out in March 2011.

The official SANA news agency also reported fighting nationwide and said dozens of rebels, which it called "mercenary terrorists", had been killed.

In Idlib, activists said opposition fighters captured about 400 soldiers and loyalist militiamen this week in Western Jisr al-Shoughour, a hilly agricultural area.

Photos released by the opposition showed dozens of uniformed soldiers sitting on the ground in what appeared to be a hangar.

"Around 400 loyalist troops have been captured. Many of them were poor conscripts who were let go. The more important officers are being interrogated," a rebel source said.

The reports could not be independently verified but they indicate an intensifying conflict, with the daily body counts of the past few weeks far exceeding previous months.

HIGHWAY HELL

The British-based Observatory, which has a network of monitors in Syria, reported fighting at a military barracks close to Maarat al-Nuaman, a town on the highway from Homs to Aleppo in the northwest.

Aleppo, Syria's commercial hub, has been contested since July and the rebel capture of Maarat al-Nuaman this week cut the main route for Assad's military to resupply and reinforce it.

Opposition sources said rebels on Thursday halted an armored army column at Khan Sheikhoun which had been sent from Hama to retake Maarat al-Nuaman, 70 km (40 miles) south of Aleppo. They also reported artillery barrages along the highway between Khan Sheikhoun and Maarat in the past 72 hours.

SANA said government forces were trying to clear Aleppo's Karm al-Jabal area of rebels on Friday.

More than 30,000 people have been killed in the conflict, which started out as a popular uprising against four decades of Assad family rule and domination by their Alawite sect and then spiraled into civil war.

Fighting has also spilled over its borders into Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, stoking fears that the war could drag in its neighbors.

Since Syrian bombardments hit Turkish villages last week, Ankara and Damascus have squared off militarily and rhetorically, with Turkey moving troops to the border and threatening to retaliate if there is further cross-border bloodshed.

Turkey infuriated Syria on Wednesday when it forced a passenger plane flying from Russia to Syria to land in Ankara. Turkish authorities said it was carrying Russian-made munitions for the Syrian army, a charge denied by Damascus and Moscow.

Turkey allows rebels sanctuary on its soil and has led calls, along with Western powers and Gulf Arab states, for Assad to step down. The Syrian president counts on the support of Russia and Iran.

Despite the bluster, most analysts believe that neither Syria nor Turkey want matters to get out of hand. The United States and European powers have also shown no desire to intervene militarily, despite much hand-wringing over the bloodshed.

HOMS UNDER FIRE AGAIN

Assad's forces also ramped up air strikes and artillery barrages against Homs on Friday, a day after they took heavy losses trying to overrun the rebel-held Khalidiya district, opposition activists said.

"There are 50 bodies of soldiers and shabbiha (militia) on the streets in Khalidiya and regime troops cannot retrieve them," said Ahmad Tarkawi, a local opposition leader.

"The situation remains tough. The regime is now using a multiple rings tactic to surround Homs."

Homs, 140 km (90 miles) north of Damascus, was the focus of world attention in February when a government siege pulverized rebel-held districts and killed hundreds of fighters and civilians. It is also a gateway to the mountains overlooking the Mediterranean, heartland of Assad's minority Alawite sect.

Video footage showed a six-storey building in Khalidiya flattened by an airstrike.

Shelling and aerial bombardments also hit Sunni Muslim towns near Homs to prevent rebels in the countryside from joining the battle for Homs, opposition activist Abu Yazan said.

Meanwhile, the refugee crisis grew ever more acute, with the U.N. refugee agency UNHCR saying that between 2,000 and 3,000 people were fleeing across borders every day from Syria.

The total number of refugees now stood at more than 340,000, Melissa Fleming, a UNHCR spokeswoman, said in Geneva.

"And now into the winter months, more and more of these people are going to be living in camp situations. So more and more of these people are going to be spending the winter in tents," she said.

Armstrong foundation fighting for future

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) ? Lance Armstrong can never ride again in the world's top cycling races. His attempt to win elite triathlons in middle age is over. He even got booted from the Chicago Marathon.

His cancer-fighting foundation, however, plans to plunge ahead, despite the sanctions laid on Armstrong by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency and its blistering report that portrays the cyclist as cheating his way through seven Tour de France victories. The agency has now ordered those wins erased.

To the Lance Armstrong Foundation, a $500-million charity built on the "Livestrong" brand, it's not about the bike. Chief executive and president Doug Ulman said the goal is to "keep fighting for the mission" of helping cancer victims.

He and the charity's other leaders are banking on the idea that the good done by Armstrong the cancer fighter will overcome any damage to the organization done by the fall of Armstrong the athlete.

"His leadership role doesn't change. He's the founder. He's our biggest advocate and always will be," Ulman said. "People with cancer feel ownership of the brand. It was created for them."

Although Armstrong canceled a public appearance in Chicago on Friday, Ulman said he will be a big part of several days' worth of events in Austin next week to celebrate the foundation's 15th anniversary, including a fundraising gala expected to raise $2 million.

Crisis management experts, however, think that might be the wrong approach.

Gene Grabowski, executive vice president of Levick, a Washington, D.C.-based crisis and issues management firm, suggested Armstrong step away from his public role for a while. The charity must be allowed to keep the focus on the work and should not engage in the public debate over whether Armstrong doped, he said.

"We have an iconic leader of an organization shown to allegedly have feet of clay," Grabowski said. "If the organization is that important to Lance, he might consider handing the reins to another high-profile person."

Armstrong denies doping and has said he'll no longer comment on the accusations.

He founded the charity in 1997 after he was diagnosed with testicular cancer that had spread to his lungs and brain. The charity grew rapidly after he won the first of seven consecutive Tour de France titles in 1999. And in 2004, the foundation introduced the yellow "Livestrong" bracelets, creating a global symbol for cancer awareness and survivorship.

Armstrong has given every indication he plans to stay visible.

About 24 hours after the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency's report, Armstrong tweeted that he was visiting headquarters and stayed about 30 minutes. He chatted with staff and picked a place to hang a new painting he recently bought for his personal art collection.

The foundation reported a spike in contributions in late August in the days immediately after Armstrong announced he would no longer fight doping charges and officials moved to erase his Tour victories. Ulman said the foundation felt a bigger pushback from donors in 2009 when it endorsed President Obama's federal health care plan.

Daniel Borochoff, founder and president of Chicago-based CharityWatch, which monitors the financial records of nonprofit groups, said it may take some time for donors to digest the allegations against Armstrong.

"Individuals that admire and support an individual who is later found out to be severely tarnished, don't want to admit it, don't want to admit that they've been duped," Borochoff said. "People, though, do need to trust a charity to be able to support it."

For now, the foundation can count on major donors like Jeff Mulder, a Michigan businessman who had previously purchased two tables at next Friday's anniversary gala for $150,000.

Mulder said he "doesn't care" about the doping charges and likely won't read the details in the USADA report.

"I don't know Lance. I've shaken his hand a few times. I feel bad for him," Mulder said. "But I don't do stuff for Livestrong because of Lance. He got it started, but I raise money because people have cancer."

Corporate sponsor Nike Inc. said Wednesday it is sticking by Armstrong and the foundation.

"Lance has stated his innocence and has been unwavering on this position. Nike plans to continue to support Lance and the Lance Armstrong Foundation, a foundation that Lance created to serve cancer survivors," the company said.

Corporate sponsors rarely pull out when the spotlight on controversy is white hot, Borochoff said. When the issue calms down, companies start to re-evaluate their commitment.

"Usually in a big crisis, companies hold back. They know from a marketing, (public relations) point, it would not look good," Borochoff said.

George Merlis, founder of Experience Media Consulting Group in Los Angeles, said Armstrong's defiance is risky for his charity.

"Every stone wall eventually crumbles," Merlis said. "There are second acts in American life. He needs to do a mea culpa and ask that the charity not be hurt."

Corporate Success / Goal Planning:

Everyone creates them, knowingly and unknowinglygoals. Some goals are lofty and well-thought-outsuch goals in business (get a raise by the end of the year), goals in relationships (be married by age 30), and goals in life (watch the Northern Lights in Alaska) are easy to quantify, to write down, to dream and to imagine. Other goals are implied and subconscious; such goals in business (commute to work without incident), goals in relationships (find someone to spend New Year's Eve with), and goals in life (leave this world a better place) may be harder to express.

Speedread.org knows that you are more than just the business person dressing for s uccess every morning. You are a complete person who does not spend every waking moment workingor if you do, you don't want to spend your life like that. Who you and what you do touches every single aspect of your lifeyour business life touches your social life; your social life touches your home life; your home life has a great impact on your spiritual life (whatever it may be); and your spiritual life determines how you perform in the business arena.

For us to consider ourselves successful in life, our goals must be achieved. Consciously or not, we determine our own successin small things (getting to work safely) and large things (being promoted to upper management)by meeting our stated or unstated goals. We also measure others' successes or failures against our own goals.

Because goal planning is mandatory for success, we have included many sections in our speed reading books. Our SpeedRead Complete Corporate course not only teaches how to read two t o threeor even moretimes faster than you can now, we also give you the tools to plan your goals to align with your purpose in life.

To determine your personal goals, you simply need to look at what success means to you in your career, lifestyle, home life, spiritually, in a word: in everything. In our SpeedRead Complete Corporate course, we spend quite a bit of time on goal planning and the keys to successnot just in increasing the number of words read in a certain time frame, but in life. Reading is essential to life in today's world, but if you simply learn to speed read without a goal as to how to use your new knowledge, you will lose it.

We know you are more than your business persona, and "success" in business may not necessarily mean success in life. At Speedread.org, we are determined to help you become not only a more successful business person, but a more successful human being.

Lifelong Effects of Speed Reading:rong>

How would you like to remember 90% of what you read from anythingthe newspaper, your favorite novel, business reports, your child's MySpace blog? The lifelong effects of speed reading are numerous.

First, you will finally be able to get to all those books on your list you have never had the time to read before. Suddenly, an hour's commute to work on public transportation won't mean simply a chapter or two it will mean an entire book checked off your list! You won't even get that sense of disappointme nt when you finish a book just to finish it. With the Complete Speed Reading Program, and the new ability to retain nearly everything you read, you'll be able to discuss the book in next month'sor even next year'sbook club!

If you are in a profession that requires a lot of reading and just as much retention such as scholars, physicians, writers, doctors, attorneys, and countless other fields, being able to read even twice as fast can end up saving hourseven up to days or weekson an intense project.

If you are a lifelong studentor just one who loves to learn and is always taking a course or two to help expand horizonsbeing able to read faster and comprehend more will, undoubtedly, be of a great boon to not only your ease of study, but also your GPA. Studies have also shown that the new way of reading taught to those who want to speed read may also assist the brain in learning a new language.

Speed reading also has lifelong physical effects a s well. The less time you spend reading, the less eye strain and eye and muscle fatigue you will experience.

Because the Complete Speed Reading Program literally re-teaches your brain how to read, you learn how to remember more at the same time. Simply being able to remember what you have read can be just what you need to set yourself apart from the pack vying for that next promotion.

Passing Along Your Knowledge:

Nothing is worse for an avid reader and a lover of books than having a child who hates to read. Parents today know that reading to a child early in life will help them foster a love of reading and prepare them to read themselves, but sometimes not even that can be enough to foster a love of the written word. Reading parents know that aversion to reading will haunt their child for the rest of his life, making school harder making life harder.

But, as any parent knows, you cannot simply say to a 10 -year-old who hates reading, "You're going to read and you're going to like it." You have to understand why reading is so difficult.

Reading, today, is taught in an inefficient manner. "Average" readers today (of any language) read anywhere from 100 words per minute (usually for memorization purposes) to 700 words per minute ("skimming", looking only for specific key words). Statistics also show that as the words per minute go up, the reading comprehension goes down, and this is borne out in school test scores. With the pressure on slower readers of having to finish the reading section and the comprehension questions within a set period of time, most finally turn to skimminglooking only at key words in the question. This "cheater" method is only reinforced when the test comes back with a good grade (since they were only looking for specific words).

What would you, as a parent, pay to not only teach your child a better, faster, and easier way of reading but also one that jumps their reading comprehension up to over 90%?

How about nothing! When you purchase Speedread.org's Complete Speed Reading Program, you have Speedread.org's permissioneven its blessingto pass the course on to your friends and family members who love to read and would like to read more or who are struggling to read and are on the fence about reading in general.

Squeezing ovarian cancer cells to predict metastatic potential

Thursday, October 11, 2012

New Georgia Tech research shows that cell stiffness could be a valuable clue for doctors as they search for and treat cancerous cells before they're able to spread. The findings, which are published in the journal PLoS One, found that highly metastatic ovarian cancer cells are several times softer than less metastatic ovarian cancer cells.

Assistant Professor Todd Sulchek and Ph.D. student Wenwei Xu used a process called atomic force microscopy (AFM) to study the mechanical properties of various ovarian cell lines. A soft mechanical probe "tapped" healthy, malignant and metastatic ovarian cells to measure their stiffness.

"In order to spread, metastatic cells must push themselves into the bloodstream. As a result, they must be highly deformable and softer," said Sulchek, a faculty member in the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering. "Our results indicate that cell stiffness may be a useful biomarker to evaluate the relative metastatic potential of ovarian and perhaps other types of cancer cells."

Just as previous studies on other types of epithelial cancers have indicated, Sulchek also found that cancerous ovarian cells are generally softer and display lower intrinsic variability in cell stiffnesss than non-malignant cells.

Sulchek's lab partnered with the molecular cancer lab of Biology Professor John McDonald, who is also director of Georgia Tech's newly established Integrated Cancer Research Center.

"This is a good example of the kinds of discoveries that only come about by integrating skills and knowledge from traditionally diverse fields such as molecular biology and bioengineering," said McDonald. "Although there are a number of developing methodologies to identify circulating cancer cells in the blood and other body fluids, this technology offers the added potential to rapidly determine if these cells are highly metastatic or relatively benign."

Sulchek and McDonald believe that, when further developed, this technology could offer a huge advantage to clinicians in the design of optimal chemotherapies, not only for ovarian cancer patients but also for patients of other types of cancer.
