Mid-September is a busy time of year in the world of design as the Solar Decathlon Europe takes place in Madrid and the London Design Festival kicks off -- and Inhabitat has correspondents on the ground at both events bringing us a steady stream of photos and updates. At the Solar Decathlon, Team Portugal designed an innovative house that can actually rotate to follow the sun in order to increase energy production and adjust interior daylighting. Team Valencia developed a modular home that can grow or contract depending on the family's needs. And the team from Tongji University produced an eye-catching house that embraces both Western and Daoist principles. In the competition, Rome's super-efficient MED in Italy house jumped out to an early lead -- but it's still too soon to call the winner so stay tuned.

Google News Gets A New Ranking Signal, And It's A Keywords Meta ...

Google announced the news_keywords metatag for publishers in Google News to help Google better identify and understand content that is related to things that are in the news.

Here?s what it looks like:

<meta name=?news_keywords? content=?World Cup, Brazil 2014, Spain vs Netherlands, soccer, football?>

If you use it, use commas to separate phrases. You can add up to ten phrases per article, and each keyword is given equal value.

The company says it?s a way to empower writers to express stories freely, while helping Google News propertly understand and classify content. In a blog post, Google News product manager Rudy Galfi explains the thought process behind the feature.

The whole thing is pretty interesting, considering that Google has downplayed the regular keywords metatag. In fact, earlier this year, in a Webmaster Help video, Matt Cutts said, ?You shouldn?t spend time on the meta keywords tag. We don?t use it. I?m not aware of any major search engine that uses it these days.?

Of course, this is a different tag, and it?s specifically news-related, though news results often appear in regular Google results. Cutts did say in a tweet:

Google is careful to note that the tag will be only ?one signal among many? that its algorithms use to determine ranking.

Singer Fiona Apple arrested on drug charge at Texas border

SAN ANTONIO (Reuters) - Grammy-winning singer Fiona Apple spent the night in a Texas jail after being arrested late Wednesday on a drug possession charge at the border patrol checkpoint where her tour bus was searched, a local judge said.

Apple, 35, was taken into custody in the same town where authorities previously nabbed singer Willie Nelson, rapper Snoop Dogg and "The Social Network" actor Armie Hammer on drug charges.

The celebrity news website TMZ reported that authorities found hashish, a form of cannabis, on the singer's bus. Officials in Hudspeth County, Texas, could not immediately confirm that allegation to Reuters.

The Hudspeth County clerk said a judge set Apple's bond at $11,000 on Thursday.

Asked why so many celebrities have been arrested in the remote West Texas county, Judge Becky Dean-Walker, who confirmed Apple's arrest, said, "because they come through here with stuff they shouldn't have."

Apple, who won a Grammy for the single "Criminal" off her 1996 debut album "Tidal," was due to perform in Austin on Thursday night. The venue's marketing director said the show had not yet been canceled.

The singer-songwriter's representatives could not be immediately reached for comment.

Romney's comments ripple across battleground map

(AP) ? Mitt Romney's offhanded comment that as a candidate he doesn't worry about the 47 percent of Americans who pay no income taxes has quickly entered the bloodstream in the presidential campaign's most hard-fought states.

His comment, in a video revealed this week, is prompting expressions of shock ? but also shrugs ? from Nevada to Florida to New Hampshire and the handful of battleground states in between.

Will it sway an election expected to be close?

There was much discussion in the relatively few states that are still considered competitive, likely to decide the race. Here, as elsewhere, the question was whether Romney was showing himself to be insensitive or merely delivering the hard truth a nation at an economic crossroads must face.

People's answers could make an Election Day difference in states where the race is tight.

"It sounds like he's leaving out half of America, if you ask me," said Gary Gabriel, an independent from suburban Columbus, Ohio, who decided in light of Romney's comments to support President Barack Obama.

But the remarks also reaffirmed the opinions of some Romney supporters.

"I worry a lot about the society we're turning into, more of an entitlement mentality," said Randy Schumaker, a Denver-area IT manager.

It all underscored the campaign's focus on the economy. And it stoked deeper questions about voters' expectations about the government's role in Americans' daily lives.

Outrage. Nodding approval. Both followed Romney's contention that 47 percent of Americans support Obama and that they "are dependent upon government" and "believe that they are victims, who believe that government has a responsibility to care for them."

In a Gallup poll taken Tuesday, about a third of the surveyed registered voters said they would be less likely to support Romney in light of the remarks, But more said the comments would not affect their votes. And most voters have already made up their minds on whom they will support, according to this and other surveys.

More voter voices:

"He does not have that empathy that says he really cares," said Michael Symes from the economically hard-hit Las Vegas area.

Student Morgan Palmer said he needs his college loan to get through Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Va. But he doesn't consider himself a government dependent. "I was really shocked," the 18-year-old freshman from Chantilly, Va., said. "This is a long-term investment, not short-term dependency."

Outside LaCrosse, Wis., however, retired mortgage loan officer Shirley Otto said Romney was merely delivering an unvarnished version of the straight talk the nation needs to hear.

"I'd rather be told the truth ... than be told something just to win an election," Otto said.

Romney's comments were recorded without his awareness at a private May fundraiser in Florida. They were provided to the magazine Mother Jones, which released them Monday.

By that evening, they had aired on evening news broadcasts in key battleground markets such as Denver and Milwaukee. By Tuesday morning, The Des Moines Register in Iowa and The Columbus Dispatch in Ohio featured front-page headlines about Romney's words.

They were the buzz outside a Joe Biden campaign rally in Ottumwa, Iowa, that morning, as they were at Phil Hopkins' paint store near, Columbus, Ohio. "It's kind of refreshing for someone to actually tell the truth for once," said Hopkins, an independent who supports Romney.

Unlike questions about diplomatic leadership that surfaced after deadly demonstrations at U.S. embassies in the past week, the attention over Romney's unguarded comments went to the heart of the presidential campaign's central issue, the economy, and the candidates' competing views of the government's role in the lives of millions of Americans out of work and living in financial uncertainty.

Romney, a wealthy former businessman who served a term as Massachusetts governor, neither disavowed nor apologized for the comments. He has said Obama has fueled government dependence, and he's now drawing attention to 1998 statements Obama made about redistribution of government resources, seeking to paint him as an enemy of the free-market solutions Romney prescribes.

On Wednesday, Romney said during a fundraiser in Atlanta that economic success "does not work by a government saying, 'Become dependent upon government.'"

Romney has been retooling his campaign message amid pressure from his own party to push more aggressively against Obama. He's asking Obama supporters from 2004 to back him instead.

And while Obama and Biden's public comments were muted on Romney's remarks, that didn't stop their campaign from quickly producing a Web video featuring people reacting negatively. Obama has argued throughout his term and during the campaign that the federal government must expand access to health care and ease college loan and mortgage repayment to allow more Americans to enter the middle class.

By Wednesday morning, a pro-Obama group had produced a television ad using excerpts of the Romney video, and was scheduled to begin airing it in Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Ohio, Virginia and Wisconsin by the week's end.

As proof of what Democrats saw as the potential impact of Romney's comments, candidates for Congress in hotly contested races began immediately trying to tie their Republican opponents to them. In Florida, Democrat Lois Frankel sent out an email fundraising solicitation linking Romney's comments to her opponent Adam Hasner, who is Romney's Florida campaign co-chairman.

In Colorado, Democratic Rep. Ed Perlmutter excavated a months-old quip about food stamp recipients by Republican opponent Joe Coors and used it to try tying him to Romney.

Reserving the spotlight on the issue for his appearance Tuesday on CBS's "Late Show," Obama lightly questioned whether Romney had the sensitivity to be president. "You have to work for everyone, not just for some," Obama told host David Letterman during the show's taping.

Aging boomers fuel growth in 'grey divorce' | The Toronto Post

TORONTO ? When Deborah O?Connor was 50, her marriage died.

At the time, she didn?t realize her decision to leave the unhappy relationship was going to result in what she estimates to be a $150,000 legal battle still being fought five years later.

?It did me in,? said O?Connor, a University of British Columbia professor who studies the effects of divorce on baby boomers and seniors.

According to Statistics Canada, ?grey divorce? has been steadily growing among those 55 and over, with rates expected to increase as more people continue to age.

While marriage remains the predominant family structure in Canada, it only represents 67 per cent of Canadian families, down from 70.5 per cent a decade ago ? and 91.6 per cent in 1961, before the advent of the Divorce Act, Statistics Canada reported Wednesday in its latest batch of 2011 census data.

And for the first time, the number of common-law families in Canada outstripped the number of single-parent families in 2011, another sign of the declining popularity of matrimony.

As baby boomers ? their children grown and moved out of the family home ? reach the retirement-age threshold, divorces among couples 65 years old and older are becoming more and more common, according to Statistics Canada numbers that pre-date Wednesday?s census release.

In 2008, there were 1,237 divorces among women 65 and older, 2,486 among men of that age and 852 divorces where both partners were over the age of 65, the agency?s figures show.

O?Connor said it?s no longer just men who are leaving their wives, perhaps for a younger woman. In the past few years, she said she?s heard more cases of older women exiting their long-term marriages by choice.

These ?silver separations? usually occur after the children have left the family home, and the women decide they have enough financial independence to go too.

What doesn?t always become apparent right away is that divorces are a costly decision, especially in the senior years.

?Financially, it is devastating,? said O?Connor. ?Emotionally, it is way better off for these women.?

Women leave for a myriad of reasons, including unhappy marriages, emotional or physical abuse, or a simple desire to end their partnership, she said. It?s a difficult adjustment period as women deal with their own aging process while also re-thinking how they pictured their retirement years.

Susan Eng of the national seniors advocacy group, CARP, said women have the most to lose in any kind of separation.

?This is going to be an issue for women more than it is for men,? Eng said.

?Still, in this generation, we still have quite a lot of women who are stay-at-home mothers. When they divorce for all the same reasons as other people divorce, they don?t have the same things to fall back on as perhaps younger people who are still working.?

Eng said divorce and money remain sensitive topics among seniors. In recent years, her office has been seeing an increase in calls from divorcees, unsure of how they?re going to make financial ends meet now that they?re alone.

?In society there?s a presumption that after a certain age, these things don?t happen,? she said. ?It?s like thinking about sexuality after a certain age, or dating.?

She said she tells these seniors the truth, even if it may be hard for some to hear.

?(I say) ?If you were barely making it before, you?re going to definitely suffer a blow to your standard of living.?? said Eng. ?There is reality to that. There really is no good way of sugar-coating that.?

Tina Di Vito with the Bank of Montreal said there?s no way for seniors to anticipate a divorce, but there are steps that can be taken to prepare for financial independence if it happened.

One of those steps should be understanding and taking control of your finances.

?Upon divorce, there?s going to be a division of property. Assets are divided, which could include things like the home, and could include Registered Savings Plan assets,? said Di Vito, who is head of the bank?s Retirement Institute.

?Pensions like CPP (Canadian Pension Plan) credits are eligible for splitting upon marriage dissolution. There are also entitlements to pension company plans, regardless of the age you are.?

One of the added difficulties of divorce later in life is that seniors are usually on a fixed income, with little opportunity for financial growth because they?re no longer working.

?Reduced assets means that there is less time to rebuild those assets. Whereas if you were younger, in your 30s or 40s and you?re involved in a divorce and division of assets, there is still some time left to rebuild those assets,? she said.

?In later life, that becomes a little more difficult, specifically if you have a retirement date in mind.?

Di Vito recommends clients look at their married lifestyle and re-evaluate how they?re newly-single lifestyle will look like.

?The home that they are in right now may no longer be affordable. The lifestyle may no longer be affordable,? she said. ?So it?s important to manage budgets and expenses quite thoroughly. Understand where your money is going, where your money is coming from.?

Certified financial planner Debbie Hartzman said she often hears from older clients clueless about their financial situations.

?One partner has been quite financially savvy, and the other partner not so much,? she said. ?Upon separation, the spouse that wasn?t as savvy, has no idea how to unravel the situation.?

Recently one of Hartzman?s clients, a woman who had been married for 35 years, found out her husband was filing a divorce.

?Her husband came home on a Monday and said ?I don?t love you anymore. I?m leaving,? ? said Hartzman, a member of the Financial Advisors Association of Canada with a private practice in Kingston, Ont., that specializes in divorce and income planning.

The couple had only $2,000 left to pay on their matrimonial home but then he dropped a bomb on her: he had secretly used their joint line of credit and bought a new home for himself.

?She panicked. I told her, ?Don?t panic,?? said Hartzman.

Eventually, her client took the news as a wake-up call.

It?s advice that many seniors should heed if they want financial protection during a divorce, said Hartzman.

?You have to be able to advocate for it,? she said. ?You have to understand where the equity is and understand the value of the assets to be on the same playing field. (You have to) be able to fight for it.?
