NVIDIA ticks budget boxes with the $229 GeForce 660 and $109 GeForce 650

NVIDIA announces its lowest priced Kepler cards the $229 GeForce 660 and $109 GeForce 650

NVIDIA's had some trouble shaving its Kepler GPUs down to an entry-level price point, but it looks to have put the problem behind it with the new GeForce 660 and 650 graphics cards. The company's ambition was to coax impoverished gamers clinging to DirectX9 (and to a lesser extent, 10) into switching up to this wallet-friendly pair of low-end units.

The 660 has been designed to be the "weapon of choice" for budget gamers. It'll play most games at reasonably high settings, thanks to its 2GB of RAM, 960 CUDA Cores and GPU Boost, which automatically overclocks the silicon according to the demands of your software. While we'll wait for real-world benchmarks, the company expects four-times the performance of the GeForce 9800GT, claiming games like Borderlands 2 and Guild Wars 2, in a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 will play at frame rates of 51fps and 41fps with full 3D, respectively

The 650 is the company's self-proclaimed "gateway" into gaming, being the lowest-priced Kepler it's planning to produce. Unlike the other cards in the range, it lacks GPU Boost, but the company left six-pin power on the card, giving card makers 64W to push the "good overclocker" 1GHz units all the way to 1.2GHz. It's got 1GB of DDR5 RAM, which will apparently handle even the newest games at mid-range levels of detail with its 384 CUDA Cores. The pair are available from today, with companies like Maingear and Origin already announcing discounted desktops for them to nestle inside.

Molecular switches in the cellular power plants: Researchers discover a new basic principle of the architecture of mitochondria

ScienceDaily (Sep. 12, 2012) ? A team of scientists at the University of Freiburg led by Dr. Martin van der Laan has achieved groundbreaking new insights into the structure of mitochondria. Mitochondria are the microscopic power plants of the cell that harness the energy stored in food, thus enabling central life functions.

This conversion of energy takes place in delicately formed cavities of the biological membranes inside mitochondria. Defects in these fine membrane structures can lead to severe diseases of the muscles and the central nervous system. A sophisticated molecular machine of the inner membrane that the Freiburg team already discovered in 2011 is not only responsible for forming the characteristic structures within mitochondria but evidently also plays an important role in assembling the outer membrane enclosing these organelles, as the scientists now report in the renowned journal Molecular Biology of the Cell.

The protein machine studied by the scientists is essential for maintaining the typical architecture inside the mitochondria and have thus received the name "Mitochondrial Inner Membrane Organizing System" (MINOS). In their latest study, the Freiburg researchers and their colleagues in Graz, Austria, Warsaw, Poland, and Groningen, Netherlands, demonstrate that the role of MINOS in creating the mitochondrial architecture is clearly more extensive than previously assumed. In a joint research effort between the Collaborative Research Center 746 and the Cluster of Excellence Centre for Biological Signalling Studies (BIOSS), Dr. Maria Bohnert, Lena-Sophie Wenz and Ralf Zerbes found out how MINOS connects the distinct membrane systems of the mitochondria with each other.

The membrane complexes SAM and TOM play a key role in this process. They use tunnel-shaped structures to transport proteins into the mitochondrion and then embed them in the outer membrane. In their latest study, the Freiburg scientists demonstrate that the MINOS component Fcj1 of the Mitofilin protein family participates directly in this process, which is essential for the survival of the cells. The inactivation of Fcj1 inhibits the integration of proteins into the mitochondrial outer membrane.

These findings show how molecular switches affecting the connectivity of mitochondrial membranes control the assembly and function of the cellular power plants. These newly gained insights improve our understanding of the basic principles of the architecture of mitochondria. In the future they could help scientists to understand and influence mechanisms of diseases that involve changes in the fine structure of mitochondria.

Dustin Hoffman gets kudos for film directing debut in "Quartet"

TORONTO (Reuters) - At the age of 75, Dustin Hoffman has finally made the leap from acting to directing with "Quartet," a pitch-perfect comedy that charmed critics and audiences alike at the Toronto Film Festival.

Shot in the British countryside, the film centers on a trio of retired opera singers happily living out their sunset years in an idyllic care home for aging musicians.

The peace is broken by the arrival of a mysterious new resident, who turns out to be their former singing partner, and the ex-wife of one of the principal characters.

For Hoffman, stepping behind the camera for the first time after nearly five decades as an actor, it was the script for "Quartet" that convinced him the time was right to direct.

"When I read it on the airplane, I started crying and I don't really respond to scripts that way," Hoffman said.

"One of the things I'm drawn to is what is invisible in our society," he added. "And with aging, at least in America, people put their parents in nursing homes to get rid of them. There's a shying away from the inevitable, I guess."

Adapted by Ronald Harwood from his own play, "Quartet" has received largely positive reviews and has drawn comparisons to 2011 charmer "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel," which was an unexpected success at the box office.

Actress Dame Maggie Smith plays Jean Horton, a once-famous diva whose arrival at Beecham House shatters the peaceful existence of her ex-husband Reggie, played by Tom Courtenay.

Rounding out the principle cast is Billy Connolly, who steals almost every scene as the wise-cracking and raunchy Wilfred, and Pauline Collins as kind-hearted Cecily, whose slow fall into dementia brings both comedy and drama to the film.

With their retirement home in peril of closing because of lack of funds, the trio must convince Jean to step out of retirement and join them on stage at the home's annual fundraiser concert in honor of Verdi's birthday.

There is also the predictable lost-love subplot, with Jean and Reggie navigating the land-mines of their failed marriage, which lasted just a few hours.

"Quartet", a Weinstein Company release, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sunday to an enthusiastic crowd. The performances of the four veteran British actors are already generating some early award season buzz.

Screen International singled out Connolly's scene-stealing turn as Wilfred and described Hoffman's directorial debut as "an affectionate, moving and charming film."

Variety said that "Quartet", which features an ensemble cast of real retired musicians and opera stars, "offers a spirited portrait of souls who, when that final curtain-call comes, intend to go singing, dancing and swearing into that good night."

The Hollywood Reporter, noting the film will appeal to older audiences, described it as an actors' film about performers where Hoffman can flex his muscles and experience.

For Hoffman, who has won two Academy Awards for his acting, the key to hitting the high notes with "Quartet" was working with the actors to find the right mix of humor and emotion.

"Some directors are collaborative, some you have to wrestle with," said Hoffman of his directorial approach. "I had these wonderful actors, and I said: 'We're not here to play characters. What do we feel at this age? Let that come out.'"

Rex Ryan Knocked Down By Scott Chandler: Jets Coach Talks Smack After Collision With Bills TE (VIDEO)

It turns out the new Rex Ryan can dish it out and take a hit.

Early in the fourth quarter, as the Jets were running all over the Bills, Buffalo tight end Scott Chandler ran right into the New York head coach on the sideline. Safety Yeremiah Bell had shoved Chandler out of bounds after a short reception and his momentum carried him right into Ryan (Chandler may have also delivered a subtle forearm)

Ryan was knocked to his knees but steadied himself before getting knocked all the way down. Then, in typical Rex Ryan-fashion, he got right back up and started jawing at Chandler.

The outspoken Ryan had a smile on his face, but perhaps that exchange would have gone a little differently if the Jets hadn't been up 41-14. Of course, the collision may have also gone differently if Ryan still weighed 348 pounds.

Victoria Beckham show full of her style signatures

NEW YORK (AP) ? Victoria Beckham must put her touch on everything to do with her New York Fashion Week show. It not only ends up looking like her signature pulled-together, well-edited style, but it feels like her, too.

She's the thoughtful hostess with waiters offering morning juice to the crowd coming early Sunday to the New York Public Library, but she keeps the guest list very tight.

She's one of the biggest draws on the calendar of seasonal previews, but there's no frenzy of paparazzi photographers. (Husband David Beckham, however, did take some photos from his seat.)

The music is loud enough to be heard, but it's far from thumping. Beckham gives the crowd a brief bow, but doesn't linger.

And she's gracious to her backstage well-wishers, but there's a time limit.

No detail is overlooked, and that goes for the clothes, too. Beckham said she checks ? or doublechecks ? every look to make sure "it looks good from every angle."

The clothes for spring had a delicacy that she said was new for her this season, although the clothes remained substantial and structured. It was the touch of illusion lace, the lingerie bra top or hemline of pleated chiffon that took the edge off banded short skirts, zip-back sheaths and shirtdresses.

The lingerie influences built on her knowledge of corsetry and fell naturally into the collection, Beckham explained after the show. "It's the first time I've gone so delicate, but I wanted the design elements."

She opened the show with a black slip-style sundress that she said was among her favorite looks.

There were more pants, all cut slim, than she typically offers but, she said, "they really look like my signature dresses, but they're trousers."

As retailers, editors and stylists have seen this round of previews, black and white are dominant forces. Beckham used a poppy red as her bold contrast color. She was more interested in texture than crazy colors, she said, noting the black dress she was wearing, which mixed canvas, georgette, lace and chiffon.

"I want to design what I want to wear," she said.
