Shuttle Endeavour's final flight itinerary revealed

Before the space shuttle Endeavour glides into retirement at the California Science Center, the spacecraft will take one last spin in the air, flying over a good chunk of California.

NASA released new details Friday of low-level photo-op flyovers Endeavour will make before its scheduled Sept. 20 landing at Los Angeles International Airport.

That morning, Endeavour will leave Edwards Air Force Base atop its 747 transport aircraft and head north to the Bay Area.

There, the shuttle will fly as low as 1,500 feet near NASA's Ames Research Center at Moffett Field and unspecified landmarks in multiple cities, including San Francisco and Sacramento.

It will then head back south, where Endeavour is expected to perform one last victory lap across the Los Angeles Basin. Details are still to come and are highly dependent on weather.

The route of photo-ops is in keeping with the final flights taken by the shuttle Enterprise, which flew by the Statue of Liberty on its way to a New York City museum, and the shuttle Discovery, which buzzed monuments in Washington, D.C., before landing at a Smithsonian annex at Dulles International Airport.

On its trip from Kennedy Space Center, Endeavour will also do fly-bys of NASA facilities that played big roles during the 30-year shuttle program.

Endeavour will leave Kennedy Space Center at sunrise Sept. 17, flying over Florida's Space Coast and then over NASA's Stennis Space Center near Bay St. Louis, Miss., and its Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans.

It will then fly over Houston, Clear Lake and Galveston in Texas before landing at Ellington Field near NASA's Johnson Space Center.

On Sept. 19 the shuttle will head to Biggs Army Airfield in El Paso for refueling and conduct low-level flyovers of White Sands Test Facility near Las Cruces, N.M.

About midday, Endeavour is expected to touch down at NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center at Edwards air base in the Mojave Desert, where it sometimes landed on its own after space missions.

ZapDUDE! ? Blog Archive ? Why a Small Business Marketing Plan ...

A very large problem among small business owners who are formulating new or revising old small business marketing plans is a lack of respect for the internet. Many who own small businesses are of the mind that they are already at their maximum capacity for customers and don't need any more, or that they would not be able to compete on the internet.

Instead, they go on about their daily business of relying on their yellow page ad and storefront to draw their business, all the while their customers are slowly edging them out. The myths about online marketing are many, but the truth is, it can be easy, it can be cheap, and it can be very effective, and this is the reason that anyone who runs a small business needs to seriously consider an effective online marketing plan.

When you boil any business down to its essential purpose, that purpose is to make profit. Using an online small business marketing plan is only going to increase profit, and that increase can actually be quite dramatic if it done correctly. The reason is that all business works on a cost per acquisition basis. You spend a certain amount on advertising, and in return you get a certain amount of customers. The reality is, that there is no more cost effective way to do this online. Additionally, a great website and a campaign to drive people to it should have a broader purpose than to simply increase your new sales. It can also turn one time customers into repeat customers, as most customers now view a website as essential for every business, and so you can view your website as another opportunity to offer great customer service.

Small business marketing plans always need to include a means of accurately gathering feedback from your customers regarding both your products, and your advertising, and nowhere is that easier than online. By implementing email surveys, questionnaires, and contact forms into your site, you can guarantee a steady and constant flow of feedback on your web page. These three elements together, that of generating new leads, of getting return sales and of generating valid feedback on your business are three of the most important elements of any marketing plan, and can vastly increase the success that you are finding with your business. This is why it is obvious that taking the plunge into the world of the internet is going to assist almost any business in at least some ways.

Parents planning for kids if Chicago teachers strike

CHICAGO (AP) ? With Chicago teachers poised to go on strike for the first time in a quarter century, parents spent Sunday worrying about how much their children's education might suffer and where their kids will go while they're at work.

Teachers said they would walk off the job Monday if no deal was reached with the district by midnight on issues such as pay, job security and evaluations. Parents have been waiting nervously for word of progress as city and union officials send messages that are discouraging one day and encouraging the next.

School officials have said they would open more than 140 schools between 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. if there is a strike so that children can eat lunch and breakfast in a district where most receive free meals.

"They're going to lose learning time," said Beatriz Fierro, whose daughter is in the fifth grade on the city's southwest side. "And if the whole afternoon they're going to be free, it's bad. Of course you're worried."

Working parents such as Eric Ferrer said opening buildings for four hours won't help them much because they have to be at work all day.

Ferrer, a cook, said his children can stay home Monday with his wife, who works in a store. But if a strike went more than one day, they would have a problem ? one that he sees no way to solve.

"My wife is off tomorrow (so) we can keep them at home," said Ferrer, as he sat in a McDonald's restaurant on the city's Southwest Side with his wife and their 8-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter. "She works the next day (and) so do I," he said.

Silvia Flores, who works as a housekeeper, said she's lucky because she's lined up a neighbor to watch her 6-year-old son between 12:30 p.m. and the late afternoon when she gets off work. But she still doesn't like it.

"I appreciate it, but he's going to be just watching TV, not learning," she said. "I don't want that because he's going to get behind (in his studies)."

Other parents said that even if they could drop their children off for four hours and pick them up, they might not because they don't know who will be watching them.

The district won't open every school, so some students would have to go to unfamiliar buildings. Plans also call for children to be supervised by non-union workers and central office employees, who they may or may not know. And all that change is coming just a week into the school year, when children, particularly the younger ones, may still be a little bit scared about leaving home all day.

"I'm not going to stick my kids in a place with strangers they don't know and with (employees) I don't know," said Doug Danby, a real estate developer. "I'm going to be dragging them to construction sites."

Beth Starrett, a single mother, had similar concerns, though she said she hadn't made up her mind on whether she would send her 8-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter to the elementary school down the block from their home in the city's Pilsen neighborhood.

She said her children know a strike is possible because their teachers have talked to them about it, and her son, like many in the city, was sent home with a packet of homework to do if there was no school. Since she works nights, she figured her children could do their work at home during the day.

But she expressed frustration that despite Mayor Rahm Emanuel's talk about children getting a better education because of the longer school day he pushed through earlier this year, the only schooling her children might get for a while would come from that packet.

"They got a longer school day for this?" she asked.

The Galileo Thermometer Was Not Invented By Galileo

Subject: Binternet Rands sues God Almighty!!

Binternet Rands sues God Almighty [wikipedia.org] for copyright, design-patent, and trademark infringement. Rumored to be acting on behalf of a mysterious organization called Accademia del Cimento, Binternet Rands is suing God Almighty for infringing on the "distinctive design" of the device commonly known as the "Galilean Thermometer."

Through its attorney [wikipedia.org], Binternet Rands claims that the external reproductive organ of the human male is not looks very similar in shape to the "Galilean Thermometer" but both devices are commonly used to measure temperatures.

Legal experts widely dismiss the copyright and design patent claims on a number of fronts, not the least of which is that it is widely assumed that male anatomy was invented first. Asked for comment, Binternet Rands's attorney mumbled something that sounded like "pics or it didn't happen." In addition, any copyrights or patents issued during that time period are almost certainly expired.

The trademark claim cannot be so easily dismissed.

Noted philosopher and writer H. Benderson [amazon.com] notes that while the "Galilean Thermometer" is commonly used to measure air temperatures and the male reproductive organ is commonly used to measure the temperatures of other things, notably parts of the female anatomy and the temperature of showers. As such, Binternet Rands's claims that confusion is very likely cannot be dismissed out of hand. In addition, the "Galilean Thermometer" is sometimes used in a manner similar to the male reproductive organ as a means of providing erotic pleasure, despite wide-spread recommendations not to use breakable glass for such purposes.

There, that's doing it right.

More Grandparents Caring for Kids, But Quality Varies - Psych Central

More Grandparents Caring for Kids, But Quality VariesAs more women enter the workforce either as a personal choice or out of?economic need, grandparents are an increasingly important source of child care in the United States. But?the care provided by grandparents varies greatly depending on their age, resources, and needs of children.

A new University of Chicago study, based on a National Institute on Aging survey, shows that 60 percent of grandparents provided some care for their grandchildren during a 10-year period, and 70 percent of those who did provided care for two years or more.

The results mirror recent U.S. Census (2010) data showing the importance of grandparents in child care. Census data reveal that 8 percent of grandparents live with their grandchildren, and 2.7 million grandparents are responsible for most of their grandchildren?s needs.

This report represents an upward trend over the past four years of more than 300,000 grandparents moving into parental roles.

Additionally, grandparents are the primary source of child care for 30 percent of mothers who work and have children under the age of five, the Census survey showed.

The UChicago study explores the diversity in the kinds of care provided by grandparents.

?Our findings show that different groups of grandparents are likely to provide different types of care. Importantly, grandparents with less income and less education, or who are from minority groups, are more likely to take on care for their grandchildren,? said researcher Linda Waite, Ph.D.

The study found that while minority, low-income grandparents were more likely to head households with grandchildren, most grandparents provided some kind of care for their grandchildren.

The research is based on one of the most comprehensive surveys done on grandparenting, the 1998-2008 Health and Retirement Study supported by the National Institute on Aging. The longitudinal study interviewed 13,614 grandparents, aged 50 and older, at two-year intervals over the period to determine their level of care-giving.

The results are published in the Journal of Family Issues.

Researchers investigated a variety of socio-demographic settings for grandparent care.

These included multi-generational households, in which a grandparent lives with a child and grandchildren; and skipped generation households, in which a grandparent heads the household caring for grandchildren without their parents being present.

Among the paper?s findings are:

  • African-American and Hispanic grandparents are more likely than whites to begin and continue a multi-generation household or start a skipped generation household;
  • African-American grandparents are more likely to start a skipped generation household. Hispanic grandparents are more likely to start a multi-generational household;
  • Grandparents with more education and better incomes were more likely to provide babysitting, Waite said;
  • Grandmothers are more likely than grandfathers to provide babysitting. Grandparents who are married are more likely to begin and continue babysitting, however;
  • Grandparents are less likely to provide care if they have minor children of their own at home;
  • Grandparents least likely to provide care are older, unmarried and less likely to be working.

Waite believes the finding should inform public policy. Policymakers need to recognize that child welfare agencies are increasingly dependent on family members, particularly grandparents, to provide care to children when parents cannot.

However, younger grandparents are often challenged by the new role as Census figures show that 60 percent of the grandparents caring for their grandchildren also are in the labor force.

?Day care assistance may be particularly needed by middle-aged grandparents who are juggling multiple role obligations ? as parent, a grandparent and a paid employee,? Waite wrote.

OBAMA ON THE BRAIN

Move over, Beyonce.

If the artists at the MTV Video Music Awards could select anyone to star in one of their videos, they'd choose Michelle Obama.

"I would have to wear such high heels," Regina Spektor, whose "All The Rowboats" is up for the art direction award, said on the show's two-story red carpet. "She is the most stunning, tall woman."

Tom Petty and the band fun. agreed.

Petty called former President Bill Clinton's address at the Democratic National Convention "one of the great American speeches I've ever heard," and confessed he's "still kind of high" from hearing his song "I Won't Back Down" play when Clinton and President Barack Obama left the podium together Wednesday.

DOUBLE-DECKER CARPET

Going up?

The red carpet at the MTV Video Music Awards outside Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles was a two-story affair this year. Attendees had to transverse a sweeping staircase to reach the upper platform. (The Associated Press and CNN were among the media outlets on the top floor).

Across the red carpet, fans filled an uncovered viewing area on the street level, hoping to catch a glimpse of hot pop stars like Taylor Swift, Rihanna and Nicki Minaj in the 90-degree heat.

QUICKQUOTE: CALVIN HARRIS

BLACK IS BACK

The heat in downtown Los Angeles didn't stop celebs from donning black.

Ne-Yo went casual with a long-sleeve ebony sweater, camouflage pants and a black fedora, while rapper Wiz Kalifa sported a black suit with cropped trousers, and his fianc?e Amber Rose accentuated her pregnant belly with a fitted lace black gown.

"I'm hot, and my feet hurt, but I look gorgeous," boasted Rose.

Pink's husband, Carey Hart, also rocked a black suit, while his pop-star wife showed off her body in a one-of-a-kind, beaded, body-hugging Stella McCartney gown with a row of metal spikes in her hair.

"I like weapons," Pink said.

DANCE PARTY

MTV got the party started early inside Staples Center.

Calvin Harris, the MTV Music Video Awards' house DJ who was also nominated for best electronic dance video for "Feel So Close" and video of the year with Rihanna for "We Found Love," performed before the show inside a spikey DJ booth for a head-bopping, fist-pumping crowd on the floor of the arena that the Los Angeles Lakers and Kings call home.

"No, this is not 'The Grind,'" said MTV News correspondent Jim Cantiello, referencing the long-done 1990s dance series. "MTV has not green-lit a remake of 'The Grind.'"

EARLY WINNERS

Even before the show started, three MTV Video Music Awards were already in winners' hands.

Demi Lovato, who performed on the red carpet, and Calvin Harris, who spun tunes inside the Staples Center before the ceremony, respectively picked up honors in two new categories: best video with a message for Lovato's "Skyscraper" and best electronic dance music video for Harris' "Feel So Close."

"I've always wanted one of these!" beamed Lovato.

One Direction also earned a moon-man trophy in the new most share-worthy category for "What Makes You Beautiful." The British boy band nabbed the award because they garnered more than 27 million tweets with the (hashtag)VoteOneDirection on Twitter. Justin Bieber's "Boyfriend" came in second place, earning more than 26 million tweets.

Motorola's rebate site goes live: $100 credit if you need to upgrade to get Jelly Bean

During Motorola's keynote on Wednesday, the company announced a nice little bonus for loyal fans -- should your 2011-or-later handset not receive a Jelly Bean update, you'll get $100 if you upgrade to one of its new models. Well, a website for the deal has gone live and the initial Ts&Cs don't make it sound like an immediate discount, but that the Benjamin will instead be reimbursed as a gift card, carrier credit or a cash equivalent of Motorola's choice. We're still in the dark about which specific phones will be denied a taste of Android 4.1, although the list is expected "very soon." In the meantime, you can sign up at the source link below to receive details of how to update, or how to claim the rebate once the fate of your old handset has been decided.
