After engineers run a months-long setup of the Mars Science Laboratory, now parked in a crater, scientists will take the rover on a nearly two-year journey that includes a visit to a six-kilometer-high mountain

After a hair-raising ride through the atmosphere, NASA's Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) has landed safely on Martian soil with cheers all around. Now engineers are busy checking out the rover Curiosity's condition while the mission's science team takes a first look around the surface locale. In the months ahead (the prime mission is slated to last a few months shy of two years) scientists plan to drive Curiosity around its touchdown site in Gale Crater and then up the slope of Mount Sharp, which rises six kilometers from the basin floor. Along the way they will look for geologic evidence that water once flowed across the landscape as well as signs of ancient microbial life.

Scientific American talked Monday with John Grotzinger, MSL project scientist, to get an insider's perspective on the landing and upcoming plans. Grotzinger has been on the MSL team since 2007, working from his office at the nearby California Institute of Technology, where he specializes in sedimentology, stratigraphy, geo-biology and ancient surface processes on Earth and Mars.

[An edited transcript of the interview follows.]

Does the landing site remind you of any place on Earth?
The landing site itself is quite different?Mount Sharp, with this five-kilometer stack of flat-lying layers?there's nothing quite like it on Earth. There are places where you see even thicker stratigraphic sections [on Earth], but because of plate tectonics they're usually very deformed, and faulted and folded?or if they're flat-lying, they're thin, on the order of hundreds of meters rather than kilometers.

Where we've landed in the ellipse, at a large scale from orbit, looks fairly familiar?it's a feature we call an alluvial fan. It's a feature that forms out in arid climates like Death Valley where it rains only occasionally and builds these deposits. We think we've landed very near the base of one of those.

How will decide now where exactly you want to go?
We have lots of data from orbit, and as the instruments check out we going to be getting more data from our own rover. We put it all together and we look at the patterns that we see from orbit?and we make decisions based on what looks interesting, what looks significant and, most importantly, what hypothesis can we test by analyzing this rock versus that rock. We look at all these options and then string them together like a chain of pearls and go after them one after another.

It's a big decision-making processing. The whole team is involved, everyone gets to have their say, and we talk about it enough that people eventually feel comfortable making the decisions.

Any chance of finding contemporary water in the vicinity of where you've landed and where you want to go?
I think it's going to be pretty dry. We had to provide some evidence to the agency [NASA] that we were not going to land on a place that had ice or water near the surface?and if we ever did find either one of them, we wouldn't be able to go there until a NASA commission has approved us to do that, because we don't want to contaminate an existing water source.

We've had several rovers on Mars now. Why another rover, and why this rover in particular?
I think the way to think about a rover is the same way that a geologist uses an off-road vehicle here on Earth. You have to go to many different places?you can't just say you've done one rover mission or two rover missions and say you're done. Because really what you're trying to do is analyze the past, the deep geologic past, in terms of major events that influence the evolution of the planet, including those kinds of events that may have created environments that were habitable to microorganisms. The trick always is that you need to find the best places to go to, because you're really not sure when it is you might discover something you're actually looking for.

Haryana Urban Development Authority hunts for ... - Real Estate India

??|?? August 8, 2012 ?? 12:06pm ??|Contributed by MANOJa

GURGAON: Suspecting large-scale irregularities in the payment of rentals by petrol pump owners, the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) is now digging out old records.

In all the HUDA sectors, the petrol pumps are giving land on lease and as per the agreement the petrol pump owners pay rentals. The city has 75 petrol pumps which cater to industry, transport, commercial and residential complexes. Of these, 25 petrol pumps are operating on HUDA land for which owners pay monthly rent.

A senior HUDA official said that the petrol pump owners pay rent as per the number of pumping units being used. Earlier there was a provision of fixed rent for petrol pumps but the rules were changed three years ago. ?Now the rental varies depending on the number of pumping machines functioning in each petrol pump,? said a HUDA official.

Details of all the petrol pumps from both estate officer I and II have been sought on an urgent basis. According to HUDA rules, the petrol pump owners pay a fixed rent for the land and 40% of that amount for each dispenser installed in the petrol pump. Each petrol pump has two or more petrol dispensers.

?The details of the petrol pumps and the number of units will be checked by the department and then the further course of action will decided,? said the HUDA official. Preliminary reports suggest that several pumps are not paying the rent as per the new norms. The rental discrepancies have been noted and this prompted HUDA to carry out the detailed survey.

?In case it is found that some petrol pumps have more number of dispenser units than mentioned in the records of HUDA, then they will be issued notices,? said another HUDA official. Meanwhile, some of the petrol pump owners were not surprised when told about the irregularities in rental payments. ?Maybe in the case of some petrol pumps the owners might have delayed payments to HUDA. HUDA will issue notices if there is any such discrepancy,? said a petrol pump owner, on condition of anonymity.

WATCH: Army officer and partner join in civil union at Air Force base ...

Last month, Johnny Wandasan, a Resource Officer in the U.S. Army, joined with his partner Kenton in a civil union ceremony at the Hickam Air Force Base on July 6, 2012. It was the first same-sex civil union ceremony at the Hickam Officer's Club.

A masterful new video from Crane Media takes us through the couple's wedding day, interjecting the wedding ceremony with scenes of Kenton and Johnny writing out invitations, sharing a cocktail, and getting dressed for the big day in front of their family members and friends.

The American Military Partner Association profiled the couple in July. The piece reads:

The July 6th date holds a special meaning to Kenton and Johnny, as does the venue; Johnny received his commissioning from the 298th Regimental Training Institute's Officer Candidate School program at the Hickam Officer's Club, back in August 2000.

The repeal of DADT aided tremendously in transitioning from a life of secrecy to a life of openness and acceptance in the military.? Kenton and Johnny recently attended a Farewell event for the Senior Enlisted Advisor from Johnny's previous unit and both were made to feel welcome.? In fact, a Platoon Sergeant from Johnny's unit, along with other non-commissioned officers, volunteered to assist with the DJ and music entertainment during their wedding.

Kenton and Johnny currently reside in Honolulu, Hawaii, and are together raising a year-and-ten-month old American Pitbull, nicknamed "Haas". ?They often talk and dream about one day growing their family through adoption.

Same-sex couples have been permitted to marry in?Hawaii?since February 2011, when Gov. Neil Abercrombie signed a bill to legalize civil unions between same-sex couples into law, which grants same-sex couples many of the benefits and protections that marriage affords. But a civil union is not a marriage, and only the freedom to marry can provide same-sex couples the same protections that different-sex couples have.

Since Johnny is a service member, his union with Kenton is complicated in terms of the ways that the government can protect their relationship. Because of the so-called Defense of Marriage Act, the law that prohibits federal recognition of legal marriages between gay and lesbian couples, same-sex couples are denied over 1,100 benefits that different-sex couples receive. These protections include access to joint military housing, the opportunity to take leave to care for a spouse, Social Security survivor benefits, and equal treatment under US. immigration law.

Since May, Freedom to Marry has been partnering with?Servicemembers Legal Defense Network?on?Freedom to Serve, Freedom to Marry, our campaign to highlight the specific struggles that DOMA causes for gay and lesbian service members and their families.

Couples like Johnny and Kenton should not have their relationships treated like second-class relationships. Freedom to Marry wants to live in a country where these brave service members and their families receive the same protections and respect that all different-sex couples receive.

Sign our?Freedom to Serve, Freedom to Marry petition HERE?to stand with Johnny and Kenton and thousands of couples like them who are treated differently under the law.

Gold 401k Investing Basics | Profit Pro Article Directory

?

Gold is the only rare metal that?s well worth a large amount of money in the entire world. When invested wisely, it may secure the amount of money saved for the future. Most people who are employed need to have an IRA and also the 401k program. Often, 401k accounts are operated by professional people, whereby both employees and the businesses take part in the financial savings. This type of investing is common in modern society understandably.

Gold 401k investing is a strategy for keeping a bit of gold within the 401k program which is later on converted into cash after retirement. The sole person who will see the importance of gold 401k investment will be the one with a strategy for his retirement.

For any individual to ensure that the program is holding a few gold, he must make an investment with a program that carries a good reputation for consistent audits of gold supplies. They are the only plans which can help them save a bit of gold within their IRAs.

Everyone can convert his own gold 401k plan to cash after retirement. Generally, all of the invested gold is preserved with the trust companies. All these internationally recognized trust companies provide semi-annual reports to each individual who invested with them, to demonstrate them their asset reports, the current gold price in the market, and returns.

All those who have 401k gold investments have the freedom to make an investment in gold mining stocks. Gold backed mutual funds are generally affordable than others.

It?s very harmful to retain the gold within your house. What you would like is to search for somewhere which is safe. Opening a gold account can be a choice here. In the majority of states, the prices of gold are widely known as fairly consistent, and therefore, they are not very much affected by financial troubles. 401k plan holders can talk to their own IRA trustees, to open for them a different gold program, where they can purchase gold through some other funds and safeguard it within such accounts. During retirement, the gold in their gold 401k programs can stably provide for them.

Advantages Of 401k Gold Investment

* Several of the benefits of these investments are that everyone can transfer some of his funds saved in the 401k to gold and enjoy its immediate improvement.

* There are lots of financial managers who will be always ready to help you concerning gold 401k investing methods.

Factors To Take Into Consideration In The Gold 401k Investing Procedure

Before deciding whether to continue or stop this procedure, it is necessary for everybody to ask himself the subsequent things:

* Just how much gold did the first investment purchase

* How much for each oz did he pay for the precious metal, and finally

* What?s the standard price of that gold after one, two or three months

Each one of these questions will help the person to ascertain whether he?ll stop or carry on with the 401k gold investing process.

(AP) ? Asian stock markets rose sharply Monday, boosted by stronger-than-expected U.S. hiring for July following three months of weak job gains.

Investors scooped up shares on news that the pace of hiring in the world's biggest economy was improving and after a softening of Italy's and Spain's sovereign bond yields ? a sign of less worry about those economies. That helped dispel fears that the 17-nation euro currency union could face a breakup as it wrestles with a massive debt crisis.

"I think people are no longer worried that the eurozone will collapse, so confidence has returned to the market," said Francis Lun, managing director of Lyncean Holdings in Hong Kong.

A weekend statement by the People's Bank of China indicating it would intensify policy fine-tuning also helped investment sentiment by raising hopes for more monetary easing, analysts said.

"It seems that policy focus in China has indeed shifted quite dramatically towards supporting growth," Dariusz Kowalczyk at Credit Agricole CIB in Hong Kong said in a market commentary.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index rose 2 percent to 8,728.93 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng jumped 2 percent to 20,061.42. South Korea's Kospi added 2 percent to 1,885.95 and Australia's S&P ASX/200 was 1.1 percent higher at 4,267.50. Benchmarks in Singapore, Taiwan, mainland China, Thailand and the Philippines also rose.

Japanese export-reliant vehicle makers were among the session's big gainers. Isuzu Motors Ltd. surged 5.9 percent and Mazda Motor Corp. jumped 4.5 percent.

Beer and beverage maker Kirin Holdings Co. added 3.6 percent. But Sharp Corp. fell 4.7 percent, days after the struggling electronics maker announced it would slash 5,000 jobs over the next year amid tumbling sales.

Energy companies also posted solid gains. Japanese energy explorer Inpex Corp. rose 4.9 percent while Hong Kong-listed China National Offshore Oil Corp., or CNOOC, added 3 percent.

Among Australian mining companies, Rio Tinto Ltd. Rose 4.2 percent. Fortescue Metals rose 3 percent after it announced it had secured $1.5 billion in new funding for the expansion of its flagship iron ore operations in Western Australia.

Stocks finished sharply higher on Wall Street on Friday after the government said the U.S. added 163,000 jobs last month, an improvement following three months of sluggish hiring. Between April and June, the economy added an average of just 75,000 jobs a month compared with 226,000 jobs per month in the first three months of the year.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 1.7 percent to close at 13,096.17. The Standard & Poor's 500 rose 1.9 percent to 1,390.99. The Nasdaq composite index rose 2 percent to 2,967.90.

Still, recent job gains weren't enough to bring down the unemployment rate, which rose to 8.3 percent from 8.2 percent in June.

On Friday, Asian stock markets fell after the European Central Bank's policy meeting failed to deliver on bold promises of action to overcome the region's prolonged debt crisis. Investors had hoped the ECB would resume purchases of government bonds to lower the borrowing costs of financially struggling countries such as Spain and announce other measures to calm a crisis that is dragging down global economic growth.

But Germany, which is Europe's biggest economy, is opposed to the ECB operating outside its mandate to control inflation and wants any government bond purchases to be financed by other funds set up to deal with the crisis.

Benchmark crude was down 20 cents at $91.20 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract vaulted $4.27 on Friday to settle at $91.40 in New York.

In currencies, the euro rose to $1.2394 from $1.2377 late Friday in New York. The dollar fell to 78.40 yen from 78.59 yen.

Pennsylvania County OKs New Radio System | Public Safety ...

P.J. Reilly, Intelligencer Journal/New Era (Lancaster, Pennsylvania)

Lancaster County?s emergency responders have high hopes for the long-awaited new countywide radio system.

?Honestly, we have no place to go but up,? said Michael Fitzgibbons, chief of Susquehanna Valley EMS. ?The system now is insufficient for what we need it to do.

?Going to the T-band and the tower placements that we?re going to be using around the county, the county is going to be more than sufficiently covered ? especially compared to what we have now.?

West Hempfield police Chief Mark Pugliese said the proposed system ?is what law enforcement and emergency services throughout the country are using today.

?The most important part is there will be channels on one radio so that all emergency services can talk together and communicate with each other, rather than each apparatus having to have three different types of radios.?

Fitzgibbons, Pugliese and other police, fire and ambulance department members from across Lancaster County were on hand Wednesday morning at the weekly meeting of the county commissioners to witness the board vote to authorize the contracts to buy a new radio system.

The contracts totaled $26 million ? $20 million of which will go to ARINC of Annapolis, Md.

ARINC will be responsible for building by August 2014 the system that will handle all emergency radio communications in Lancaster County.

?From the public service side, it?s something we absolutely have to have,? said Les Houck, a Salisbury Township supervisor who chaired a countywide committee that?s been searching for a new radio system since the late 1990s.

ARINC?s system will feature communications via television band, or T-Band, which will replace the late 1950s-era technology of the county?s current radio system.

According to Dennis Ward of MWF Enterprises, the county?s radio consultant, the new system will alleviate existing problems with:

Overcrowding. If there are multiple incidents occurring simultaneously in the county, emergency responders often talk over one another.

Interoperability. Police, fire and ambulance crews cannot currently talk to one another unless they have multiple radios.

Coverage. There are parts of the county, especially in the River Hills, labeled ?dead zones,? where current emergency radios don?t work.

ARINC will not get its $20 million in a lump sum.

The county will pay the company over the next two years as ARINC achieves certain project goals.

The first significant goal is to set up a mini-version of the countywide system in the city by March 2013.

City and county officials will vigorously test the city version of the system before it is deployed throughout the county.

?Obviously, we don?t want to go countywide if we find out it doesn?t work the way we want it to,? county solicitor Crystal Clark said.

If the system works as expected in the city, it then will be expanded to cover the entire county by August 2014.

And it must pass the county?s tests before the system would ultimately be accepted and final payment to ARINC is made, Clark said.

Until the new system is accepted, the county?s current radio system will remain in operation.

Eventually, every police, fire and ambulance department across the county would have to buy new radios ? if the new system is accepted.

Basic radios, which are made by several manufacturers, cost about $1,000 apiece, with public safety-grade models running from $1,500 to $2,000.

Scott Martin, chairman of the county commissioners, said the county plans to run training programs on using the new system for all emergency responders as the time draws near for the system to go live.

?This has been a long journey, filled with disappointment, but in the end it all worked out,? Martin said of the county?s search for a new radio system.

?We had a simple mission for the (radio) committee, and that was to develop the best product for our first responders at the best price for our taxpayers. For me, that?s a win-win.?

Sequencing of malaria genomes reveals challenges, opportunities in battle against parasite

ScienceDaily (Aug. 5, 2012) ? Genetic variability revealed in malaria genomes newly sequenced by two multi-national research teams points to new challenges in efforts to eradicate the parasite, but also offers a clearer and more detailed picture of its genetic composition, providing an initial roadmap in the development of pharmaceuticals and vaccines to combat malaria.

The research appears in two studies published in the latest issue of the journal Nature Genetics. They focus on Plasmodium vivax (P. vivax), a species of malaria that afflicts humans and the most prevalent human malaria parasite outside Africa, and Plasmodium cynomolgi (P. cynomolgi), a close relative that infects Asian Old World monkeys.

"The bad news is there is significantly more genetic variation in P. vivax than we'd thought, which could make it quite adept at evading whatever arsenal of drugs and vaccines we throw at it," said Professor Jane Carlton, senior author on both studies and part of New York University's Center for Genomics and Systems Biology. "However, now that we have a better understanding of the challenges we face, we can move forward with a deeper analysis of its genomic variation in pursuing more effective remedies."

In one study, the researchers examined P. vivax strains from different geographic locations in West Africa, South America, and Asia, providing the researchers with the first genome-wide perspective of global variability within this species. Their analysis showed that P. vivax has twice as much genetic diversity as the world-wide Plasmodium falciparum (P. falciparum) strains, revealing an unexpected ability to evolve and, therefore, presenting new challenges in the search for treatments.

The second study, performed jointly with Professor Kazuyuki Tanabe at Osaka University, Japan, sequenced three genomes of P. cynomolgi. The researchers compared its genetic make-up to P. vivax and to Plasmodium knowlesi (P. knowlesi), a previously sequenced malaria parasite that affects both monkeys and humans in parts of Southeast Asia.

Their work marked the first time P. cynomolgi genomes have been sequenced, allowing researchers to identify genetic diversity in this parasite. Its similarity to P. vivax means that their results will also benefit future efforts to understand and fight against forms of malaria that afflict humans.

"We have generated a genetic map of P. cynomolgi, the sister species to P. vivax, so we can now push forward in creating a robust model system to study P. vivax," explained Tanabe. "This is important because we can't grow P. vivax in the lab, and researchers desperately need a model system to circumvent this."

Much of the work occurred under a seven-year grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health. The funding has established 10 International Centers of Excellence for Malaria Research (ICEMR). Carlton is heading an ICEMR based in India, where malaria -- and P. vivax in particular -- is a significant public health burden. A particular aim of this Center of Excellence is to support and help train scientists in India who can then work to combat infectious diseases, such as malaria, where they are most prominent. The P. vivax sequencing was funded by NIAID as part of the NIAID funded Genomic Sequencing Center for Infectious Diseases at the Broad Institute under Contract No. HHSN272200900018C. The Burroughs Wellcome Fund was instrumental in providing pilot funds for the P. cynomolgi sequencing.

Researchers at the following institutions were also part of the P. vivax sequencing: The Broad Institute, the National Institute of Malaria Research in India, Arizona State University, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Researchers at the following institutions were also part of the work on P. cynomolgi: Osaka University, Dokkyo Medical University, Japan's Corporation for Production and Research of Laboratory Primates, Nagasaki University, Juntendo University's School of Medicine, the University of Tokyo, the National Institute of Biomedical Innovation, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Arizona State University.
