CAIRO (AP) ? Egyptians voted for a second day Sunday in a presidential runoff pitting Hosni Mubarak's last prime minister against a conservative Islamist, with a sense of gloom hanging over many at the polls over the choice and the prospect that the ruling military will still hold most power even after their nominal handover of authority to civilians by July 1.

In a sign of how much power they wield, the military generals were preparing to define the next president's authorities in an interim constitutional declaration that state media said could come by Monday. Under the declaration, the council of generals would be the nation's legislators and control the budget after the Islamist-dominated parliament was dissolved under a court order last week.

The generals will also likely take on the parliament's task of appointing a 100-member assembly to write the permanent constitution, giving them enormous influence over the document that will shape Egypt's future and allowing the opportunity to enshrine for themselves a political say.

As a result, for some voters even as they stood in sweltering heat at the polls, it seemed that the choice for Mubarak's successor ? between Ahmed Shafiq, a longtime friend and admirer of Mubarak, and Mohammed Morsi, the candidate of the fundamentalist Muslim Brotherhood ? would ultimately make little difference.

"I don't trust the whole thing. I feel everything is planned in advance and what we are doing now is just part of the plan," Asmaa Fadil, a young woman who wears the Muslim veil, said at a polling station in the Cairo district of Sayeda Zeinab. She said she had lost confidence in the political process, particularly after the dissolution of parliament.

After the first day of voting ended Saturday, the Brotherhood sought to rally the public behind it, saying that a Morsi win for the presidency was now the only hope for the revolution after the military's consolidation of power.

In a statement issued late Saturday after a meeting of its top leaders, the Brotherhood denounced Thursday's court ruling dissolving parliament, saying it "amounted to a coup against the entire democratic process parliament and take us back to square one." The fundamentalist group led the now-dissolved parliament with just under half its seats.

It also criticized new powers that were given to military police and intelligence last week to arrest civilians for a host of crimes ? as minor as blocking traffic. The powers will "recreate the climate of terror and oppression and crush the people's hope for change."

Shafiq, who served as Mubarak's last prime minister, is a former air force commander and a veteran of Mubarak's governments, so he is closely tied to both the military and the old regime system. If he wins, that would likely mean a smooth relationship with the generals. His critics fear it will mean more than that ? the outright continuation of the Mubarak-style, military-backed autocracy that last year's revolt sought to uproot.

Morsi ? and the Muslim Brotherhood ? would likely have far rockier relationship with the generals and a Morsi win could bring a tussle over spheres of power. However, the Brotherhood has reached accommodations with the generals previously since Mubarak's fall on Feb. 11, 2011, just as it struck deals in the past with Mubarak's regime itself.

The winner in the race will be officially announced Thursday. But the result could be known by as early as Monday morning, based on results from individual counting stations that Egyptian media and each campaign usually compile and make public.

Turnout from the two-day balloting, which ends Sunday evening, could be a significant measure. If significantly lower than the 46 percent in last month's first round of the presidential election, it would be a sign of widespread discontent with the choice and doubts over the vote's legitimacy. There were no figures yet from the current voting.

The race between Shafiq and Morsi has deeply polarized the country. Each has a core of diehard supporters. Each won about a quarter of the vote in the presidential election's first round last month in which 13 candidates were running.

But among their critics, each ? or both ? inspire a powerful enmity. The anti-Shafiq camp sees his very candidacy as an insult to the 18-day wave of unprecedented protests last year that ousted Mubarak. The anti-Morsi camp is convinced he will hand the country over to the Brotherhood to turn it into an Islamic state or that the group is just as authoritarian as Mubarak was.

"I am bitter and I am filled with regret that I have to choose between two people I hate. I have to pick a bad candidate only to avoid the worse of the two," lamented a silver-haired pensioner in Cairo's crowded Bab el-Shariyah district. He refused to give his name, fearing retribution for speaking so openly.

"Nothing is going to be resolved and Egypt will not see stability," he added.

A similarly pessimistic note was echoed by another voter, accountant Yasser Gad, 45. "The country is heading to a disaster. It will keep boiling until it explodes. No one in the country wants the former regime to rule us again."

Few voters displayed an air of celebration visible in previous post-Mubarak elections. The prevailing mood was one of deep anxiety over the future ? tinged with bitterness that their "revolution" had stalled, fears that no matter who wins, street protests will erupt again, or deep suspicion that the political system was being manipulated. Moreover, there was a sense of voting fatigue.

Egyptians have gone to the polls multiple times since Mubarak's fall on Feb. 11, 2011 ? a referendum early last year, then three months of multi-round parliamentary elections that began in November, and the first round of presidential elections last month.

"It's a farce. I crossed out the names of the two candidates on my ballot paper and wrote 'the revolution continues'," said architect Ahmed Saad el-Deen, in Cairo's Sayedah Zeinab district, a middle-class area that is home to the shrine of a revered Muslim saint.

"I can't vote for the one who killed my brother or the second one who danced on his dead body," he said, alluding to Shafiq's alleged role in the killing of protesters during last year's uprising and claims by revolutionaries that Morsi's Brotherhood rode the uprising to realize its own political goals.

Neil Patrick Harris, shown at left in 1990s hit "Doogie Howser M.D.," turns 39 today. Feel old yet?

By Blaire Carroll, E! Online

After a busy week for Neil Patrick Harris, which included hosting the Tony Awards Sunday, the "How I Met Your Mother" star turns 39 today.

It's been an exciting year for Harris, who with his E! correspondent fiance, David Burtka, welcomed twins Gideon and Harper in October of 2010 through the use of a surrogate. Despite not wanting to be "gay role models," Harris and Burtka have given hope to other devoted gay couples wanting biological children of their own.

Unexpected discovery highlights new role for cell death regulator

Friday, June 15, 2012

An unexpected discovery of how the body controls cell death has revealed a potential new therapeutic target.

A research team based at Cardiff University's School of Biosciences has already revealed the mechanism by which high alcohol intake can induce pancreatitis and its progression to pancreatic cancer. Now a new study, published in Current Biology, reveals a hitherto unknown interaction between two well known molecules, which has important implications for our understanding of inflammation and cancer in the pancreas as well as other organs.

The Cardiff team studied the protein Bcl-2, already known to be capable of inhibiting programmed cell death in all tissue types in the body. Cell death is vital to normal development, and under certain circumstances this protein can therefore promote tumour growth and cancer.

The Cardiff study of pancreas cells showed that removal of the Bcl-2 protein activated a molecule in the cell membrane which pumps calcium out of the cells. As the team expected, a lower level of Bcl-2 increased the level of programmed cell death. But they also found that the lack of Bcl-2 markedly protected against another much more dangerous form of cell death - necrosis, in which cells swell and burst, releasing their contents and causing severe inflammation. The team found the increased protection against necrosis was directly linked to increased activity of the calcium pump.

The team, led by Dr. Oleg Gerasimenko and MRC Professor Ole Petersen, believes that blocking the Bcl-2 effect on the calcium pump, so that the pump becomes more active, could be a beneficial therapy against necrosis and the subsequent dangerous inflammation. This is important because necrosis of the enzyme-secreting pancreatic cells, often the result of high alcohol consumption, markedly increases the risk of pancreatic cancer, the fourth leading cause of cancer deaths in both Europe and the US with a 5-year survival rate of only 4 per cent.

Professor Petersen, also Director of Cardiff's School of Biosciences, said: "The new findings come from studies of pancreatic cells. We have discovered an entirely unexpected link between two well known molecules and this link is a potentially attractive target for treatment of pancreatitis and the dangerous progression of pancreatitis to pancreatic cancer. However, our findings are also likely to be of more general importance. The inhibitor of programmed cell death, Bcl-2, and the calcium pump in the cell membrane are found in every type of cell in our body. The interaction between the two could well be important in deciding cell fates in many different organs and also the development of inflammation and different cancer types."

Cowboys' Claiborne impressing staff with 'football IQ'

ARLINGTON ? Dallas Cowboys secondary coach Jerome Henderson came off the field dripping with sweat after a recent intense post-practice tutorial with rookie cornerback Morris Claiborne.

With his left wrist still on the mend from ligament surgery in March, Claiborne was limited to conditioning work during minicamp. But that didn't stop Henderson from pushing Claiborne hard on the field and in the classroom.

In either spot, Henderson said Claiborne impressed with his football knowledge.

?He's an intelligent young man, a really smart player,? Henderson said.

Four months after he registered an embarrassingly low Wonderlic test score at the NFL Scouting Combine, Claiborne is well on his way to mastering Rob Ryan's defensive playbook.

?I don't know what happened there at the combine, but I know from talking to him he understands football and picks up concepts very well,? Henderson said. ?He speaks very intelligently and knows how to handle himself. I've been very impressed with him from a mental standpoint, from a professionalism standpoint and from an athletic standpoint.?

Claiborne scored a 4 on the Wonderlic, an aptitude test consisting of 50 questions that must be answered within 12 minutes. The average score for NFL prospects is around 20, but Claiborne said he ?blew the test off? and only answered around 15 questions after seeing it didn't pertain to football.

?I'm past that,? Claiborne said Thursday, the final day of the three-day minicamp. ?When it happened, it didn't bother me, so it's still not bothering me now.?

The low test score didn't stop Dallas from trading up to select Claiborne sixth overall.

?He is clearly a guy who has a good understanding of football,? Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said. ?We use the expression ?football IQ.' Everything we heard from people at LSU who were around him for three years said he was very natural that way. We've given him a lot of stuff. It's particularly difficult for him because he is hearing the stuff, but he's not getting to do it. But he's handling it well.

?We'll see when he gets out there practicing, when the bullets are really flying, how well he handles it. But he hangs in there mentally, and that has a lot to do with his understanding of the game.?

Garrett also spoke glowingly of the way Claiborne has handled his rehab. Claiborne insisted Thursday he would be fully ready for training camp when it starts in late July.

?We've talked about injured players staying engaged,? Garrett said. ?And he's a great example, really getting locked into meetings. You see him at practice and the walkthroughs, shadowing the corner, trying to simulate that work as much as he can.?

Claiborne, 22, stayed close to Henderson, 42, throughout minicamp, trying to absorb as much as he could from the former NFL defensive back.

?I got all the mental reps I can get and just stayed focused,? Claiborne said. ?I basically just followed behind Coach all day and just got the calls and the checks from him and just tried to stay mentally sharp.?

Henderson is working overtime to get Claiborne ready because he knows how difficult life can be for rookie corners.

?Ooh, wow, rookie corners, they got an ?X' on them, I don't care who you are,? Henderson said. ?A rookie corner in this league, everybody is going to try him. And they are going to keep trying him over and over and over.?

Henderson has plenty of experience working with young, gifted corners. He was an assistant with the New York Jets in 2007 when Darrelle Revis made his first Pro Bowl appearance after being drafted 14th overall. In 2010, he was with the Cleveland Browns when they selected Joe Haden seventh overall.

?You see early on that, ?OK. This guy is going to be all right. It's not going to be too big for him,'? Henderson said. ?Then there are some guys it takes a little time, and you say, ?Well, OK, he's going to have to grow into this.' Obviously, we hope (Claiborne) will be ready for those big moments early on. But with any rookie, until you get them out there, you don't know.?

But this much seems certain: If Claiborne stumbles as a rookie, it won't be because of a low football IQ.

Karma rewards WiMAX subscribers for sharing their 4G

Normally, we associate Karma with religion, or if we're honest, luxury hybrid sedans. A company by the same name would rather you make that connection with WiMAX Internet service. Much like a 4G version of FON, subscribers to the Clearwire-rooted network are required to share their Internet link-ups with the public as a WiFi hotspot. As the name suggests, though, sharing the connection ideally pays back dividends through free access: for every guest who signs in on Facebook to get 100MB of free data through the hotspot, another 100MB goes towards the hotspot owner. If all goes well, the Karma user creates a virtuous circle (pun entirely intended) and pays little if anything for Internet access; while the WiMAX hotspot costs $69, the $14 per gigabyte rate only kicks in if the credit runs out. Trial runs are starting in New York City and might only hit 500 hotspots by the end of 2012, but the hope is to upturn the wider industry and make sure there's never a shortage of public WiFi.
