5 Stocks Being Accumulated By Hedge Funds - Seeking Alpha

Disclosure: I have no positions in any stocks mentioned, and no plans to initiate any positions within the next 72 hours. I wrote this article myself, and it expresses my own opinions. I am not receiving compensation for it (other than from Seeking Alpha). I have no business relationship with any company whose stock is mentioned in this article. (More...)

One of the best ways for investors to get a feel for solid investments is to look at what hedge funds and institutional firms are buying. These funds typically spend a great deal of time analyzing industries, corporate financials, and executive competency. If an investor feels strongly about a stock, seeing that a hedge fund added a position can serve as an added confirmation. Investors can track these purchases through the 13F quarterly report.

The 13F is a quarterly report containing details regarding large stock holdings held by institutions with at least $100 million in assets under management. These large institutions are required to file these reports with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The 13F is incredibly useful for investors and traders, as it allows the small retail person to follow what the large professional is investing in. It is one way to help balance out the uneven flow of information.

The list below includes five stocks in which funds have increased their holdings by at least 5 million shares (as of the November filing) and have an average equity trading volume of at least 1.5 million shares each day. The liquidity is important as it allows investors to enter and exit their positions easily.

Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF)

In the latest filing, Citadel Advisors purchased over 5,000,000 shares. Its current holdings of ANF stands at just over 5.2 million shares. Citadel owns 6.3% of the company.

The company has had a fantastic performance over the past three months, which coincided with the most recent filing indicating large hedge fund purchases. The company has rallied mostly on the back of a strong earnings report in mid November. The stock jumped by more than 30% after the earnings announcement.

With a strong chart, a fantastic earnings report, and added institutional buying, I would look to get long on any weakness over the next few weeks.

Star Scientific (STSI)

In the latest filing, net institutional purchases totaled approximately 13 million shares. This represents roughly 9.3% of the company's current float of 140 million shares.

The stock has fallen during the previous three months of trading but has seen a significant rise since November. This coincides with the 13F filing and once again indicates that funds know the right time to make an investment.

Although the stock has seen a swell of institutional buying and a sharp rise in share price, the stock appears to have reached a tipping point with the stock selling off over the past week. The company's future depends on its ability to win lawsuits against the major tobacco companies for product infringement. It is unclear how long the company can last. Future secondary offerings are a possibility. Because of the uncertainty regarding the company's business model, I would advise to stay on the sidelines for now.

General Electric (GE)

In the latest filing, Bright Light Capital purchased just over six million shares to bring its total holdings of General Electric to 9.2 million shares.

The stock has fallen off over the past three months, although it has risen slightly since November.

As the chart indicates, the stock has fallen since its earnings report in Mid October. What is also interesting to note are the rising volatility levels indicating that traders feel the shares may be in for some larger than usual price swings over the next 30 to 60 days.

With escalating volatility and a stock price that has underperformed over the past few months, I would advise investors to stand on the sidelines until a better opportunity for entry presents itself.

Yahoo (YHOO)

During the most recent quarter, Greenlight Capital initiated a new position in the company of 5.1 million shares. Also, Third Point Capital added to its position as well. Interesting to note that Third Point was responsible for the ousting of the previous CEO and replacing the CEO with Marissa Mayer, formerly of Google Inc. (GOOG).

Over the past three months, Yahoo's stock performance has been one of the leaders across the market. This has been mostly fueled by the company's stellar earnings report on October 22, 2012. This caused an almost 6% increase in the underlying price and the stock hasn't looked back since. Currently, the company is trading at just 16 cents under its 52-week high.

With a new but well trained CEO leading the charge, a fantastic set of technicals, and David Einhorn backing the company, investors should consider getting long.

Facebook (FB)

During the most recent quarter, Tiger Global increased its Facebook holdings by 9,000,000 shares. The fund now owns 11 million shares of the social networking company. Additionally, fellow hedge fund manager Paul Tudor Jones II, also purchased 100,000 shares of FB.

Over the past three months, Facebook's share price has been on a tear. It has traded back up to the mid 20s, which wasn't seen since the stock continued to descend in price after its initial public offering.

There are several reasons for the recent increase in share price. The company released a strong earnings report in late October that caused investors to get back in. Additionally, the company has shed light on its plan to generate future revenue. A few of these opportunities include charging users for access to music and charging third parties for integration. Additionally, the company may eventually get into other segments of the market like online dating. With 1 billion unique visitors during the last quarter, a dating site could stand to be a profitable venture.

Investors who don't already own shares of Facebook, may want to consider adding a starter position and then monitor the share price over the next few months.

Conclusion

These institutional holdings are very interesting to analyze as they indicate what types of companies the largest money managers in the world are looking at. These 13F reports should be used as an additional tool for everyone's investing methodology. If you're going to follow these investments and also build a position, it's important to look at future 13F filings to determine if these same money managers reduced or sold out of their holdings.

Auto sales look good for '13, but for the 'cliff'

18 hrs.

It?s been a disappointing holiday season for many?retailers, but U.S. car dealers have been busily ringing up sales?as the year wraps up.

If preliminary numbers for December hold up, 2012 could prove to be the industry?s best year since the long recession and painfully weak recovery began. And 2013 is?shaping up to be even better ? unless auto sales fall off the fiscal cliff. ?

?I clearly hope we get some bipartisan effort to avoid the fiscal cliff,? said Ford Motor Co. Chairman Bill Ford Jr. ?It?s vitally important for the economy that we work this out.?

That's true for the auto industry, in particular. After nearly half a decade of struggles, carmakers are ending 2012 on a positive note. November saw demand for new cars, trucks and crossovers surge at a double-digit pace. In fact, a number of makers including Audi, BMW, Honda, Nissan and Porsche are setting all-time sales records for the month. By the end of November, Hyundai had already beaten its previous full-year record set in 2011.

December, meanwhile, is expected to see another gain of around 15 percent, year-over-year, according to a forecast by LMC Automotive. The consulting firm has now upped its final forecast for all of 2012 to 14.5 million and conservatively anticipates another comfortable jump next year.

?The U.S. light-vehicle sales market continues to be a bright spot in the tremulous global environment,? said Jeff Schuster, LMC?s senior vice president of forecasting.? ?The only major roadblock ahead for the U.S. market is the fiscal cliff. Assuming that hurdle is cleared, 2013 is one step closer to a stable and sustainable growth rate for autos, with volume above the 15 million unit mark.?

Barring that setback, analysts anticipate a steady shift in the sort of vehicles Americans have been buying.?

The upcoming North American International Auto Show will feature an assortment of new products, and the debut of the all-new 2014 Chevrolet Corvette and Chevy?s next-generation Silverado pickup are likely to be two of the star attractions. But the floor of Detroit?s Cobo Center will be covered with a variety of downsized models, including Honda?s pint-sized Urban SUV Concept and the new Lincoln MKC compact luxury crossover.

Ford's?B- and C-segment models ? subcompacts like the updated 2013 Fiesta and compacts???have jumped from 13 percent?of the overall U.S. market to 24 percent since 2004, according to Mark Fields,?Ford?s chief operating officer.?And the trend is expected to continue at an even faster pace going forward.

If anything, Americans are downsizing powertrains at an even more rapid rate, trading in V-6s for inline-fours and even abandoning traditional V-8s for high-tech turbo V-6s. Six-cylinder engines now account for more than half of the demand in Ford?s big F-Series pickups, Fields said.

While demand for smaller models is soaring, sales of some traditional American vehicles have remained strong ? pickups in particular. Credit the strong upturn in the housing market in recent months, said Mark Reuss, president of North American operations at General Motors.?

While the so-called ?personal use? segment has largely dried up, there?s significant pent-up demand among contractors and other professional for pickups and other full-size trucks, something Detroit?s Big Three hope to use to their advantage as they continue to hold off import competitors like Nissan and Toyota.

Pent-up demand is likely to float all boats, says analyst Joe Phillippi, from the largest to the smallest market segments. It helps, he adds, that automotive interest rates are at or near historic lows.

On the downside, makers have been cutting back incentives as demand outstrips supply, especially of more popular models like the Hyundai Elantra and the new Honda Accord. There are still bargains to be had on slower-selling models, but research by TrueCar.com reveals that incentives have slipped to their lowest levels in several years even as transaction prices ? the price customers actually pay ? have risen to near-record levels.

And that is likely to translate into record industry earnings, at least in North America. Ironically, the market is running counter to trends in much of the rest of the world. European car sales have been in freefall all year, and without a clear resolution of the Continent?s economic crisis, few see any short-term solution.? Even China, which has seen annual growth rates approaching 100 percent over the past decade, has started to stumble.

So, makers from around the world are once again looking to the U.S. to carry the load. The good news is that ?the forecast ahead looks even better,? Toyota?s top U.S. executive, Jim Lentz, recently said, adding that ?analysts expect we will reach 16 million in just a few short years.?

That?s still well short of the U.S. all-time record of 17.5 million vehicles sold in 2005, but it?s still a welcome turnaround from the disastrous slump the industry has only just left behind.

Possible legal troubles for makers of "Blue Brees" - WAFB 9 News ...

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

A spokesman for Drew Brees says the Saints quarterback had no idea his photo is being used to market a possible synthetic drug sold in Baton Rouge. While he would not elaborate, he says Brees will take "appropriate action".

Mary Hughes says her 16-year-old son had a bad reaction from after he smoked something called "Blue Brees". She says he could barely stand up and his speech was slurred.

The Baton Rouge store that sells it, called Zombieland, has signs posted saying products like this are not for human consumption. But Assistant District Attorney John Russell says the signs are almost pointless when packaging implies something else.

"It's kind of tongue-in-cheek little humor involved to let them know, 'Hey this is not really aromatherapy, it's not incense, it's not bath salts....it's exactly what you're looking for,'" said Russell.

The tongue-in-cheek image on the product Hughes's son smoked is of a zombie-like picture of Saints quarterback Drew Brees. That in itself could land the maker in legal trouble.

"The key is that they used the name in association with the number 9 jersey. Normally, leaving NFL or any other reference off is enough. But they didn't do that here," said John Church, LSU law professor. "They added the name 'Brees', so it seems as if that's what creates the connection in the minds of the consuming public. And I think it probably is a violation."

Prosecutors say says distributors of "Blue Brees" might be violating drug laws too. While the store owner insists they sell this product to use in oil burners and not for smoking, Russell says the way Louisiana's synthetic drug laws is written could be the difference.

"They've identified large groups of the organic molecules involved. So that by outlawing one group of organic molecules, you can effectively outlaw every substance that would fall within that group which could literally be hundreds of different variations," said Russell.

One of Zombieland's owners called 9News after Wednesday's and Thursday's stories aired. He tells us:

"We would like to apologize. There was no disrespect intended by using Drew Brees. We?re fans. It wasn't meant to be a representation of him or the Saints. It was a play on words. As soon as we saw the negative feedback on the WAFB website, we took it off the shelf and will not replace it. Zombieland is an aromatherapy store. We do not condone the consumption of any kind of synthetic drugs (ex. bath salts or cannabinoids)."

The Goebellesque/McTernin trick for 2013 - Menzies House

Considering modern technology, McTernan seeks to control ALP propaganda via Google and Wikipedia. When the ordinary person does a web search for "facts" about Australian political affairs, page after page will be propaganda from the Goebellesque McTernan. Step 6 of the 10 steps decreed in the Communist Manifesto as carried out in the US.?GC. Ed.

McTernan says:

''Adopting an open-data framework to increase transparency, accountability and collaboration would allow the digitally literate public to design innovative ways to use government data,'' he said in his thinker's report, which has been made public.

''Everybody in Australia has got two personal researchers - Google and Wikipedia,'' he said. ''So, in the end you need to be clear: this is the problem, these are the facts, this is the way we're going to analyse it, and this is what we're going to do.''

Do You Understand How A Cloud Phone System Operates? | The ...

by SYA on December 25, 2012

By Judy A. Elliote

In our rapidly advancing age of technology one of the familiar terms that you hear mentioned is the phrase cloud phone system. This phrase might cause you to visualize white fluffy cotton ball shaped telephones, but it actually refers to how it operates rather than how it looks. In an attempt to find a logical explanation that could be understood by the average person we began our investigation.

We began by attempting to learn who first coined the phrase and the reason for this particular choice of words In the era of rapidly advancing technology it is a common occurrence, such as with the use of this phrase that multiple sources all attempt to claim the rights to this being their idea first before anyone else. It seems that back in 1997 Net Centric tried to trademark the term cloud computing, which was found the earliest use. It was also discovered that an employee of Google attending a search engine conference was said to use that phrase first. We will now try to concentrate on learning a more clear understanding of what it is.

The creation of the cloud phone system has provided web-based multipurpose communications that are integrated, interactive and convenient to use. Small and large businesses of all types are attracted to the many available features that can be customized to fit their needs exactly. Who Was the Most Charitable Celeb of 2012?

Taylor Swift's new album Red -- and her love affairs -- garnered lots of headlines this year, but behind the scenes, she gave so much of her time and money to charity that she's been named the number one "Celeb Gone Good" by DoSomething.org, an organization that connects teens with social change and that highlights charitable celebrity role models throughout the year.
