Are Social Media Apps Becoming the New Means of ...

Let?s face it ? many of us have become dependent on cell phones. They not only offer us the extended travel ability that a cordless home phone doesn?t, but they also offer us many added features and benefits, many of which we never thought possible. Who knew one day we?d be talking to our cell phones, commanding them to play a song for us?

One added feature that the majority of today?s cell phones offer is the internet. And, with the internet comes the ability to communicate on various social media sites. Social media sites have significantly grown in popularity with new users surfacing every second and many users are still hooked years after joining sites. It should come as no shock, then, that the number of people using social media sites via mobile has significantly climbed.

But, what?s even more interesting is that social media apps are becoming communication mediums themselves. A report from the International Telecommunication Union noted that social media apps now provide similar communication platforms like cell phones such as voice and text features.

Facebook recently updated its Messenger for iOS and Android apps, which allow users to see if someone read your message and you can tell if someone is typing. Also, you can see the name of a town or city from which a message was sent.

But, why ? Why would Facebook take the time to create such an app for cell phones? Facebook is already ranked the most popular social media site and stands far ahead of its social competitor, Twitter.

Well, I?d say because cell phone users are easily fascinated by such apps. The new messaging experience will have users hooked instantly.

What does this mean for businesses?

While the Facebook app may not directly correspond to online businesses, businesses could learn a few things from it.

First, customers love mobile technology since they can access the internet on the go. So, if you don?t already have a mobile site, now?s the time to get started on creating one. Following that point, if your business isn?t involved in social media, clearly now is the time. Social media sites have become increasing popular by users everywhere and they offer businesses the opportunity to conveniently and quickly communicate with customers. ?Lastly, just as cell phone users love upgrades, customers love the latest products and services. You can keep your business alive and your competition ahead of the game by offering new products and services.

Policeman's widow: Punishment for IRA killers weak

DUBLIN (AP) ? The widow of a Northern Ireland policeman killed by Irish Republican Army die-hards condemned the length of prison sentences imposed Monday on his murderers, saying they were too short to deter more attacks by IRA factions.

Kate Carroll spoke out after a Belfast judge imposed minimum prison terms on two men from the Continuity IRA splinter group who were convicted of murdering her husband Stephen in 2009. He was the first officer to be killed in Northern Ireland since 1998, the year of the U.S.-brokered Good Friday peace accord for the British territory.

Justice Paul Girvan ruled that Brendan McConville must spend a further 22 years in prison, and John Wootton 11 years, before either could apply for parole. Both have been behind bars since 2009.

McConville, 41, and Wootton, 21, originally received life sentences when they were convicted in February, but the Northern Ireland legal system allows judges to specify minimum terms before parole bids can be considered. They usually are approved.

The Continuity IRA, one of several anti-British factions still trying to undermine the peace process in Northern Ireland, lured police into the ambush by vandalizing a family's house and triggering an emergency call for help. Carroll, 48, was providing armed backup to the officers responding to the threatened family, and sitting alone in his unmarked patrol car, when he was shot once through the back of the head.

The judge said McConville and Wootten, who declined to answer questions in police custody or during their trial, have demonstrated "no remorse for what they did."

Both men were sporting long beards grown as part of a long-running protest by members of various IRA factions inside Northern Ireland's Maghaberry Prison; they also have been smearing their own excrement on their cell walls, mimicking an IRA tactic pioneered in the mid-1970s.

Carroll's widow noted that Girvan's sentences were much shorter than the 30-year minimums that typically apply in the rest of the United Kingdom for those convicted of murdering a police officer.

"Justice has been done? Not for us, it has not," Kate Carroll said, calling for Northern Ireland judges to impose the same level of punishment as elsewhere in the UK. "You cannot make exceptions in one country. It is disgusting."

She called the prospect that Wootton might be free by 2023, when he's 32, as far too weak a punishment to deter Irish republicans from attacking police. McConville, a former politician for the IRA-linked Sinn Fein party, could be free in 2034 at age 63.

Carroll said Wootton's lesser punishment "gives the message out that it is fine to kill a policeman here because you get a rap on the knuckles."

Wootton's mother received a suspended 12-month sentence after admitting she hid her son's computer and other incriminating evidence from detectives.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland said in a statement it was studying the sentencing judgment and would make no detailed response.

Hours after the sentences were announced, a van was hijacked and set on fire in the divided town of Lurgan, southwest of Belfast, and police advised people to avoid the Catholic part of town. The community is often troubled by such incidents when legal action is taken against IRA factions.

The Continuity IRA, founded in 1985, is one of several small Irish republican groups still plotting bomb and gun attacks in defiance of Northern Ireland's broadly successful peace process. The once-dominant Provisional IRA renounced violence and disarmed in 2005, and one of its former commanders, Martin McGuinness, today serves as deputy leader of the region's Catholic-Protestant government.

Pet food recall that won't end? Diamond cat food now risky.

Pet food recall from Diamond Pet Foods has been expanded eight times, triggered an FDA investigation and critique, and now includes cat food. The company's handling of the salmonella crisis may be even worse.

By Schuyler Velasco,?Correspondent / May 20, 2012

It's the food recall that just won't end.

From the recall of a single batch of its ?Diamond Naturals? dry dog food on April 6 for possible salmonella contamination,?Diamond Pet Foods has expanded the recall on eight separate occasions, endured a week-long inspection of one of its plants by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which criticized its practices, and most recently acknowledged that cats are also at risk.

Yet the Missouri-based maker of Diamond,?Premium Edge,?Kirkland Signature, and other pet food brands has not called special attention to the expansion of the recall to cat food beyond amending a?statement on the company?s Internet recall site: ?Diamond Pet Foods has voluntarily recalled some brands of dry dog?and cat?food that it manufactured in its Gaston, S.C. facility between December 9, 2011 and April 7, 2012 due to potential Salmonella?contamination.?

There is no specific information on which brands and batches of cat food may be affected, though you can check a questionable bag's product code to find out.?

On Friday morning, the Calgary Herald in Alberta, Canada, reported that two cats in a Montreal animal shelter have died, and another is ill, after eating Diamond Pet Foods products.?Also in Quebec, another person has been reported with a case of salmonella, bringing the total number of cases to 16 in the United States and Canada caused apparently by handling the pet food.

Also on Friday, the company issued yet another recall involving certain sizes of its Diamond Naturals lamb and rice dog food manufactured on Aug. 26, 2011, which is later than the date range for all its other recalled products so far.

One of the unusual aspects of this recall is Diamond's release of information. On April 12, six days after Diamond's first recall, the FDA began an investigation. Its week-long inspection of Diamond's Gaston facility found numerous violations.

?All reasonable precautions are not taken to ensure that production procedures to not contribute contamination from any source,? its report said, noting that the factory?s screening process for possible contaminants wasn?t thorough enough.

Other violations: Factory workers were seen handling sensitive equipment with bare hands; there weren't enough hand-washing stations throughout the plant (even in areas where raw meat was being handled); the factory used damaged equipment with holes and cuts, which would make the tools difficult to clean properly.

Despite these findings, the company didn't issue a second recall until a week after the inspection was over, involving a single production run of its?Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul brand. On April 30, it issued another expansion of the recall, this time involving puppy food. On May 3, the federal government announced it had linked 14 cases of salmonella in adults to Diamond's dog foods. On May 4, Natural Balance Pet Foods and WellPet LLC, makers of Wellness, announced a recall of their dog foods made at Diamond's plant. From there, the recalls kept coming. ??

?Diamond handled it the wrong way,? says Mike Sagman, creator and editor of?dogfoodadviser.com, a consumer site that rates dog food products and follows pet-food industry news, including recalls. ?The company knew more than they were letting out, and they let it dribble out over the month instead of releasing it all in one document. The damage is greater when you aren?t transparent.? ?

Recalls, he says, are unpredictable and largely unavoidable for large manufacturers in any industry. But they can be an opportunity for a company to shine, he adds, in terms of responding to a problem and coming clean with customers.

But? ?Diamond really blew it,? he says. ?Their chance of survival from this is questionable, my common sense tells me.?

The company itself didn't return multiple calls to its media line. Its consumer hotline was answered promptly, but on two separate occasions its operators declined to provide any information once the caller identified herself as a reporter.

The FDA is also tight-lipped.

Largest protests yet in Syria's biggest city

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian forces on Friday fired on protesters holding the largest opposition marches yet in Aleppo, a sign of rising anti-regime sentiment in the country's biggest city, which has largely remained supportive of President Bashar Assad throughout the 15-month uprising.

The head of the U.N. observer mission in Syria warned that neither his team nor armed action could solve the country's crisis, and called on all sides to discuss a solution. But the regime kept up its assaults on opposition areas and protests, while the head of Syria's largest exile opposition group dismissed the U.N.'s plan as unrealistic.

Anti-regime protests in Aleppo have been growing since a raid on dormitories at Aleppo University killed four students and forced the temporary closure of the state-run school earlier this month.

The May 3 raid was an unusually violent incident for the northern city, a major economic hub, where business ties and large minority populations have kept most residents on the side of the regime ? or at least unwilling to join the opposition.

On Thursday, some 15,000 students demonstrated outside the gates of Aleppo University in the presence of U.N. observers, before security forces broke up the protest.

Even bigger numbers took to the streets Friday. Aleppo activist Mohammad Saeed said it was city's largest demonstration yet, with more than 10,000 people marching in the Salaheddine and al-Shaar districts and nearly as many more elsewhere in the city.

"The number of protesters is increasing every day," Saeed said. He added that several people were wounded when government forces fired tear gas and live ammunition to disperse the rallies.

"It's a real uprising happening in Aleppo these days," said Rami Abdul-Rahman, head of the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Thousands of people elsewhere in the country also staged anti-government rallies in solidarity with Aleppo. Friday is the main day of protests across Syria and this week's demonstrations were dedicated to "The Heroes of Aleppo University."

Opposition activists said security forces opened fire on protests in several locations, including the Damascus suburbs and the central city of Hama. They also said the regime shelled the central town of Rastan, which rebels have controlled since January.

Amateur videos posted online Friday showed shells whizzing through the air and slamming into residential areas in Rastan, sending up clouds of smoke.

The Observatory also reported three people shot dead by security forces in the al-Tadamon neighborhood in southeast Damascus.

More than 200 U.N. observers are in Syria as part of a peace plan to end the crisis. The head of the observer mission cautioned Friday that neither his mission nor armed force can stop the bloodshed without genuine talks between the two sides.

No number of observers can achieve "a permanent end to the violence if the commitment to give dialogue a chance is not genuine from all internal and external actors," Maj. Gen. Robert Mood told reporters in Damascus.

International powers have pinned their hopes on the peace plan for Syria that special envoy Kofi Annan brokered in April. The plan paved the way for the U.N. observers, and it calls for a cease-fire and dialogue to end the conflict.

The U.N. estimated in March that the violence in Syria has killed more than 9,000 people. Hundreds more have been killed since then as a revolt that began in March 2011 with mostly peaceful calls for reform has transformed into an armed insurgency.

Both sides have flouted the cease-fire, raising concerns that the peace plan is ineffective and the violence is spinning out of control.

Annan's spokesman, Ahmad Fawzi, said in Geneva that the envoy would be visiting Syria soon, but did not give a date. A high-ranking military adviser to U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Babacar Gaye, arrived in Damascus on Friday.

But dialogue seems a distant hope. The opposition says it will accept nothing less than the regime's ouster, and the government brands its opponents as terrorists.

On Friday, the head of Syria's largest exile opposition group, the Syrian National Council, said he had little hope for Annan's plan.

"We have no illusions on this mission," Burhan Ghalioun told The Associated Press in Paris, where he is based. "In reality, it's a mission which was done in order to hide the lack of international consensus. That's all."

Assad says the popular will is not behind the country's uprising, and claims that foreign extremists are driving the unrest to destroy the country. He has pointed to a rise in rebel attacks on military targets as well as suicide bombings in major cities to bolster his case.

The most recent bombing, which targeted an intelligence building in Damascus on May 10, killed some 55 people and has raised fears that extremist groups are exploiting the chaos in Syria for their own purposes.

At the United Nations, Ban said he had such fears.

"The recent terrorist attacks in Damascus suggest that these attacks were carefully orchestrated," he said. "Having seen the scale and sophistication of these terrorist attacks, one might think that this terrorist attack was done by a certain group with organization and clear intent. I have strongly condemned these terrorist attacks."

In Damascus, Mood spoke out against the rising violence.

"I am more convinced than ever that no amount of violence can resolve this crisis," he said. "I am concerned about the incidents where explosives, improvised devices are targeting innocent civilians, innocent people because it is not going to help the situation."

'The Avengers,' 'The Vow,' Katy Perry and Adele also land multiple nods.

The nominations for the 2012 Teen Choice Awards have been announced, and the CW's hit drama "The Vampire Diaries" snagged a leading six nominations, with "American Idol" and Justin Bieber following close behind with five each.

"Diaries" earned nominations for Choice TV Show: Fantasy/Sci-Fi, Choice TV Actor: Fantasy/Sci-Fi nods for both Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley, and Choice TV Actress: Fantasy/Sci-Fi nominations for Nina Dobrev and Kat Graham. Somerhalder is also vying for Choice Male Hottie against Bieber, multi-nominee Ryan Gosling, Liam Hemsworth and Robert Pattinson.

The Choice Female Hottie contest pit pals Katy Perry and Rihanna against Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez and model Kate Upton.

Among the other top TV nominees are "Pretty Little Liars," "Gossip Girl," "Supernatural" and, oddly, "Bones," and HBO's racy "True Blood," which is up for Choice TV Show: Fantasy/Sci-Fi and Choice TV Actress: Fantasy/Sci-Fi for Anna Paquin.

All of the usual candidates are among the top film nominees, with "Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1" scoring nominations for Choice Movie: Sci-Fi/Fantasy, Choice Movie Actor: Sci-Fi/Fantasy for both Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner (who is also up for Choice Movie Actor: Action for "Abduction"), and Choice Movie Actress: Sci-Fi/Fantasy for Kristen Stewart.

They face stiff competition in the Sci-Fi categories against "The Hunger Games," which landed nominations for Choice Movie: Sci-Fi/Fantasy and acting nominations for leads Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson, and "The Avengers," which along with its Choice Movie nominations scored individual acting nods for Chris Hemsworth, Robert Downey Jr. and Scarlett Johansson.

Among the other top film nominees are "The Help" (Choice Movie: Drama and Choice Actress: Drama nominations for Emma Stone and Viola Davis), "The Vow" (Choice Movie: Drama, Choice Actress: Drama for Rachel McAdams and Choice Actor: Drama for Channing Tatum, who is also up for his comedic performance in the much-nominated "21 Jump Street") and, inexplicably, the released-today comedy "What to Expect When You're Expecting," which earned four nods, for Choice Movie: Comedy, Choice Actor: Comedy for Chris Rock, and Choice Actress: Comedy nods for both Cameron Diaz and Jennifer Lopez.

On the music side, the Choice Single by a Female Artist nominees are "Set Fire to the Rain" by Adele, "Stronger" by Kelly Clarkson, "Dance Again" by Jennifer Lopez featuring Pitbull, "Part of Me" by Perry and "Eyes Open" by Taylor Swift. On the guys' side are Bieber ("Boyfriend"), Drake ("Take Care"), Flo Rida ("Good Feeling"), Bruno Mars ("It Will Rain") and Pitbull ("Give Me Everything [Tonight]").

Many of the same artists will vie for Choice Male Artist (Bieber, Drake, Mars, Pitbull and Blake Shelton) and Choice Female Artist (Adele, Lopez, Perry, Rihanna and Swift).

The genre-by-genre breakdown of the nominations mean there are a lot of Teen Choice Award contenders. For a full rundown of the nominees, visit the Teen Choice Awards website, where you can also vote for your favorites.

The Teen Choice Awards air live on Sunday, July 22, at 8 p.m. ET.

Alternatives To Central Heat and Air Systems

Submitted : May 17, 2012???Word Count : 469???Popularity:?Not Rated

While many homes come with centralized heating and air conditioning, other climate control options are available. Some are more efficient or more ecologically friendly. Which one is best for you is just a matter of figuring out your needs and how best to meet them.

Radiant Heat
Radiant heat floors and ceilings are one alternative to central heating that many homeowners find both more effective and more ecologically friendly. This system works by running water pipes through the floors or ceilings of a room and then heating that water via a boiler or electric input. The water then runs through the pipes, and the heat that radiates out of the water is transferred into the room.
