Scuba Certification Tips | The Dream Life

Posted by kristoffer on April 20th, 2012

Scuba diving is one training-intensive hobby. Having a scuba certification card from a reputable scuba association assures the people manning different dive shops that you have been trained to dive safely and responsibly. Dive shops will require you to present your scuba certification card before arranging a chartered diving expedition. It is not just because they are concerned for your safety, but because inexperienced novices could ruin the diving experience for everyone.

Certification is also required when renting any equipment from dive shops, as they can be damaged if not used or handled properly. Proof of your training includes returning them in good condition.

Scuba enthusiasts always say that getting certified is harder than getting a library card, but easier than getting a driver?s license. It is not easy, and most certainly not free. You are required to prove that you have the know-how about using the equipment, handling yourself underwater, and knowing how to react in various underwater situations.

There are many scuba certification programs today, the most popular of which are PADI and NAUI. The former is considered the ?lighter? program, making it ideal for tourists who only want to take a few supervised dives; while the latter is more involved and ideal for a beginning wanting to take up scuba as a recreational sport. After completing the beginner level, both programs offer advanced-level training.

Kris Allen Debuts New Song on American Idol Results Show

Last night's American Idol results show featured what many would consider another surprising elimination. Were you in favor of who voters sent home?

But do you know what did not come as a surprise to any veteran viewer of this Fox hit? That former champion Kris Allen took to the stage that made him famous and impressed once again, this time with the debut of his latest single, "The Vision of Love."

Watch the performance now and then pity poor Taylor Hicks, who helped introduce Allen after awkwardly telling the crowd he'd be performing in Las Vegas this summer... to pretty much no reaction. How did that guy beat Katharine McPhee again?

Finding Your Way Around a Router

Have you ever accessed your home or small office router configuration settings and been bombarded with a mass of incomprehensible, cryptic computer-eze and senseless acronyms and abbreviations? Never fear -- you can quickly come up to speed on the basics. The router is a computer networking device that manages the data. It interprets the packet's address and directs the packet to its destination.

It?s Not About Instagram ? It?s About Mobile

instagram logoIt has been more than a week now, but Techmeme today is dominated by Instagram related headlines. Was the Board involved? Did Marc Andreessen know? Did Instagram take the $50m from Sequoia and others before agreeing to be acquired? Was $2bn the right ask? Was $1 billion cheap or is it a bubble? These are soap opera-like questions. Interesting? For sure if you have insomnia. Deep? Not really. A week after the acquisition I think we all need to be stepping back and reflecting on the meaning of the deal as it relates to our future. Actually, if we do that, many of the other questions do become easier to answer, and possibly more interesting.

Ridge Racer Unbounded

The Ridge Racer series may not carry Gran Turismo or Forza Motorsport's swagger, but the long-running franchise has a dedicated fan base that loves the drift-centric racing action. The latest series entry (developed by Bugbear Entertainment, which developed the FlatOut stunt-racing series), attempts to bring a new chaotic element to the familiar gameplay by adding environmental and vehicular destruction as players race for street cred in the fictional Shatter Bay. The story is something you can flat out ignore?it's a racing game, after all?but the driving action is interesting and varied. Just play against human opponents if you wish to maintain your sanity. I reviewed the $49.99 PC version; Ridge Racer Unbounded is also available on the PS3 and Xbox 360 platforms for the same price.

I Can't Drive 55
Ridge Racer Unbounded has a great sense of speed. Some games, such as those in the Burnout franchise, almost move too quickly, which results in drivers too often overshooting targets or smashing into walls. I always felt in full control here. That said, you will likely have great difficulty competing with the enemy AI, which manages to drive near-flawlessly. This intensifies each mistake you make, and adds unneeded stress to the game, detracting somewhat from the fun.

Ridge Racer Unbounded features a varied car selection that ranges from ultra-sleek sports cars to powerful vintage muscle cars, each with different speed, acceleration, handling, strength, and drifting capabilities. These cars are , of course, unlicensed as they get absolutely wrecked as you bulldoze your way through the city?vehicle manufacturers aren't too keen on seeing their luxury rides decimated in video game form.

The cars are gorgeous, as are the dense urban environments in which they race. Shatter Bay's many districts are high-detailed and destructible locations (with some beautiful lighting effects) that just entice you to race one more match. When you fire up Ridge Racer Unbounded, you can only select one car and race district, but others are unlocked as you accumulate collateral damage points. These points are gathered by plowing through anything other than a solid brick wall.

There are, however, a few highlighted structures that you wouldn't normally plow through?such as the aforementioned brick walls?until you build your Power meter, which acts as a speed boost (with cool accompanying light trails). Not only can you do big damage to the environment (and score big points) by blazing through stores to reveal alternate routes or ramps, but you can also knock other cars off the road in dramatic fashion ("frags"), Burnout style. Frags?along with catching big air (sometimes off rooftops!) and destroying structures?give you additional Power meter points.

Who's Going To Drive You Home?
City Creator, a new feature to the series, lets players design, and name tracks. An easy-to-use in-game tool lets you drop track sections on a grid, and then populate the track with ramps, sand traps, and other obstacles. I encountered some truly creative tracks, especially Hellbent666, which had ramps and obstacles everywhere?as well as many an explosion opportunity.

A number of options let you select the race style (Frag Attack, Domination, and more), the time of day, number of cars, vehicle class, and more. After creating your city, you can share online. The one downside here is that you can't upload a track until you've built six racing events within your city. That was a bummer.

An Interstate Love Song
Ridge Racer Unbounded is a new direction for the franchise?one that is much welcomed. It may obviously crib from other successful games, but it's fast, controls well, and features fun environmental destruction. If you've steered away from Ridge Racer in the past, give Unbounded a spin.

Padcaster / Lenscaster lets you mount SLR lenses on iPad, we go hands-on at NAB (video)

http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/18/padcaster-lenscaster-ipad-SLR-mount-hands-on/

Think people look ridiculous shooting stills or video with an iPad? Try throwing an SLR lens into the equation as well. Manhattan Edit Workshop founder Josh Apter developed the Padcaster as an inexpensive solution for mounting an Apple iPad on a tripod. And why would you want to do such a thing? With 1080p video capture, built-in LTE and a on-board editing suite, such a device makes for an excellent on-the-go all-in-one, letting you shoot, cut and transmit video with a single package. One major aspect of visual storytelling that the tablet doesn't excel at, however, is emphasizing details with blurred backgrounds, along with magnifying your subject with optical zoom. Enter the Lenscaster. This universal lens mount lets you use a standard 35mm adapter to attach any SLR optic to the iPad camera, enabling a small variety of hardware-driven optical effects, including shallow depth of field, manual focus and a zoom option that doesn't result in detail loss.

Apter took the Padcaster and Lenscaster along on a demo shoot in New York City's Union Square, interviewing passersby with a Cinevate 35mm lens adapter, 85mm f/1.4 Carl Zeiss lens and a Sennheiser MKH-60 shotgun mic, all mounted to a Padcaster-equipped new iPad. The mounting duo may note be visually appealing from a physical perspective, but the resulting footage does look convincing -- you can see it in full after the break. The Padcaster's aluminum frame even doubles as a DSLR cage, letting you assemble a pro rig complete with camera, lens, mic and lights after removing the urethane iPad insert. The designer is also working on an iPad insert, though the tablet-sized contraption may prove to be overkill when paired with a pocketable smartphone. The Padcaster will be available soon for "about $200," while the Lenscaster attachment should ship for an additional 60 bucks. You'll also need to factor in a magnification optic to compensate for the distance between the iPad and the lens, along with a 35mm adapter, both of which are not included. The device is also unable to take full advantage of the iPad's resolution, creating black borders around the image, which you'll notice in the sample video, positioned just below our hands-on video right after the break.
