Poll: Trayvon Martin case divides US by race, age, wealth, and politics

New polls show a distinct split in how Americans view the shooting death of Trayvon Martin. Some groups, including blacks, women, and Democrats, are more likely to see race as a key factor.

The Trayvon Martin case is dividing the country racially, generationally, politically, and by economic status.

That?s the finding of public opinion polls taken since the Feb. 26 killing of a black teenager by neighborhood-watch volunteer George Zimmerman in Sanford, Fla.

?How Americans perceive this case is divided on several variables,? says Raghavan Mayur, president of TechnoMetrica Market Intelligence, which conducted a recent Christian Science Monitor/TIPP poll. ?A similar pattern emerges when asked if blacks should be concerned about racial profiling in predominantly white areas.?

For example, twice as many blacks and Hispanics as whites say race played a major role in the shooting death of Trayvon (73 to 36 percent). The Monitor/TIPP poll of 906 adults taken from March 30 to April 5 finds other disparities as well.

  • Younger respondents are more likely to see race as playing a major role in the case than those of middle age (66 to 43 percent).
  • Women more so than men (48 to 39 percent).
  • Those of modest income more than the wealthy (51 to 37 percent).
  • Democrats much more so than Republicans (64 to 32 percent).

Asked in this survey ?to what extent should blacks be concerned about racial profiling by police or law enforcement in predominantly white areas,? 69 percent say to ?a great? or ?some? extent. Here too, younger respondents, women, blacks and Hispanics, and Democrats are more likely to see racial profiling as a problem.

A recent USA Today/Gallup poll finds similar results.

Given what?s known about the case, for example, blacks are more than twice as likely as nonblacks (72 to 32 percent) to believe that Mr. Zimmerman (who is white and Hispanic) is guilty of a crime in shooting Trayvon, according to an April 2-4 Gallup survey of 3,006 Americans.

?Blacks are paying much closer attention to the news of the incident; overwhelmingly believe that George Zimmerman ? is guilty of a crime; believe that racial bias was a major factor in the events leading up to the shooting; and believe that Zimmerman would already have been arrested had the victim been white, not black,? writes Gallup editor in chief Frank Newport in an analysis of the findings.

The Pew Research Center finds similar racial and political differences in the extent to which Americans are paying attention to the unfolding story.

Blacks and Democrats are much more likely to be following the story than whites or Republicans, Pew finds, and whites and Republicans are much more likely to say there?s been too much coverage of Trayvon's death.

Drug-Resistant Malaria Spreads, Scientists Hunt Down Genetic Causes

News | Health

The parasite that causes malaria is becoming immune to artemisinin, the most effective drug. Pinpointing the resistance genes could offer a way to beat back the disease

The malaria parasite is a wily organism, shifting its life stages as it flits from human to mosquito and back again. It still kills some 600,000 people each year and has outwitted eradication efforts, having developed resistance to previously popular drugs and, thus far, eluded vaccine-induced immunity.

The arrival of a powerful drug in the late-20th century gave researchers new hope. Called artemisinin and based on a traditional Chinese herbal remedy, it cleared the parasite faster and more thoroughly than any other current antimalarial. Researchers are still somewhat uncertain about exactly how it works, but they know that it targets the parasite as it infects red blood cells.

But the hope that artemisinin would serve as a final, exterminanting blow against malaria has begun to fade. Since 2008 patients in Southeast Asia have been slower to lose the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum than they once were. And this precursor to resistance seems to be spreading, despite efforts to carefully use artemisinin (by giving it in combination with other drugs) to avoid the emergence of resistance.

Researchers have been tracking that spread?and looking into the genetic basis of the trait?to try to develop more effective ways of keeping the disease in check. The findings, described in two related papers published online April 5 in Science and The Lancet, were called "a tour de force" by David Sullivan, an associate professor at Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute, who was not involved in the new research.

Loci of resistance
The confirmation of additional resistance will likely be a blow to malaria battlers. "Artemisinin-based compounds have really been the key to success in pushing back malaria in recent years," says Timothy Anderson, of the Texas Biomedical Research Institute and a co-author on both new studies. "But there's been a cloud on the horizon: patients in western Cambodia have been showing very, very slow parasite clearance." As a result, such patients have a greater chance of having the parasite return. They also provide a wider window for mosquitoes to bite them and then transmit their (more resistant) infection to other people.

For their Lancet study, Anderson and his colleagues (from the U.S. and Southeast Asia) studied the infections of 3,202 malaria patients on the western border of Thailand over the course of a decade. They found that the time it took the artemisinin-based combination therapy to clear the parasites steadily increased, from a mean of 2.6 hours in 2001 to 3.7 hours in 2010. They also found that the infections that persisted with a half-life of more than 6.2 hours jumped from 0.6 percent at the beginning of the study to 20 percent at the end.

These numbers might look small, but they are quickly creeping toward those figures already present in the resistance epicenter of western Cambodia, about 800 kilometers away, where the mean clearance time in 119 different patients was 5.5 hours, and 42 percent of the infections had a half-life of more than 6.2 hours. The researchers predict that the Thailand border area, which has used the artemisinin-based therapy since the mid-1990s, will see these levels of resistance within the next two to six years.

"Slow-clearing, resistant parasites are not restricted to western Cambodia as everyone had hoped," Anderson says. "Our approach to containment really has to be rethought."

Obama denounces 'radical' Republican budget plan

(AP) ? In an election-year pitch to middle-class voters, President Barack Obama is denouncing a House Republican budget plan as a "Trojan horse," warning that it represents "an attempt to impose a radical vision on our country" that would hurt the pocketbooks of working families.

Obama, in a speech to newspaper executives, is sharply criticizing a $3.5 trillion budget proposal pushed by Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., which passed on a near-party-line vote last week and has been embraced by GOP presidential hopefuls. The plan has faced fierce resistance from Democrats, who say it would gut Medicare, slash taxes for the wealthy and lead to deep cuts to crucial programs such as aid to college students and highway and rail projects.

"It's a Trojan horse. Disguised as deficit reduction plan, it's really an attempt to impose a radical vision on our country," Obama said in excerpts of his speech released Tuesday. "It's nothing but thinly veiled social Darwinism."

Obama's message comes as Republican Mitt Romney looked to solidify his grip on his party's presidential nomination in primary contests in Wisconsin, Maryland and Washington, D.C. The White House has appeared increasingly focused on Romney, with Obama's campaign criticizing the former Massachusetts governor by name in an energy ad as the president's team seeks to frame the election as a referendum on the economic security of middle-class voters.

White House advisers billed the speech ? to be delivered during The Associated Press luncheon of editors and publishers ? as an important marker for the president as he seeks re-election. Senior administration officials said the address would build upon themes the president delivered in Kansas last fall, in which he called the nation's economic challenges a "make-or-break moment" for the middle class, and in his State of the Union address, in which he laid out his election-year agenda.

Ryan's proposal aims to slash the deficit and the size of government while offering sharply lower tax rates in return for eliminating many popular tax breaks. GOP front-runner Mitt Romney and his Republican rivals have said they would support Ryan's budget plan, which has little chance of passing the Democratic-controlled Senate but lays out the GOP's fiscal priorities.

Obama was making the case that whoever wins the White House will face an economy still recovering from the "worst economic calamity since the Great Depression" and many Americans will still be looking for jobs and lacking financial security. By next year, "a debt that has grown over the last decade, primarily as a result of two wars, two massive tax cuts and an unprecedented financial crisis, will have to be paid down," Obama says in the prepared remarks.

He argues that Ryan's budget plan would stall the economic recovery. "By gutting the very things we need to grow an economy that's built to last ? education and training, research and development ? it's a prescription for decline," he says.

On taxes, Obama is also expected to call for economic fairness encapsulated by the so-called "Buffett Rule," arguing that the wealthy shouldn't pay a smaller share of their income in federal taxes than middle-class taxpayers. Many wealthy taxpayers earn investment income, which is taxed at 15 percent, and Obama has proposed that people earning at least $1 million annually ? whether in salary or investments ? should pay at least 30 percent of their income in taxes.

Obama planned to note that "broad-based prosperity has never trickled-down from the success of a wealthy few. It has always come from the success of a strong and growing middle class."

The focus on tax reform has brought attention to the effective tax rate of Romney, a millionaire who is paying 15.4 percent in federal taxes for 2011 on income mostly derived from investments. The top nominal rate for taxpayers with high incomes derived from wages, not including investments, is 35 percent.

In advance of Obama's speech, political adviser David Axelrod charged that Romney is "just in a time warp," saying the former Massachusetts governor "seems to look at the world through the rear-view mirror." He said Romney subscribes to a Cold War-era belief that Russia is America's greatest foe in the world and would return the country to outmoded economic policies that led to the near economic meltdown in the fall of 2008.

"I think he must watch Madmen and think it's the evening news," Axelrod said in an appearance on "CBS This Morning." He said that Romney "wants to go back to the same policies that got us into this disaster."

Obama was speaking at a luncheon of 900 editors and publishers following The Associated Press' annual meeting. William Dean Singleton, outgoing chairman of the AP Board of Directors and chairman of MediaNews Group Inc., will pose questions to Obama following the president's remarks.

Board game fun: Yeah, that was us, the family with the funny ...

I do not think of myself as a board/card game sort of person, though when someone in my family suggests we play, I admit I usually have fun.

Still?when one of those someones?suggested we pack a board game?for our three-day Spring Break getaway,?I think I gave them?a?look that suggested, really?

Because I couldn?t imagine anyone would want to play, given all the other activities?planned and the relatively short?nature of our trip. But I was overruled, and the box was packed in the car.

Where it sat until our last night away.? That evening,?when?we walked into the hotel after dinner, we discovered?the lobby quite full?.with families playing board games.

Is it game night? one of my kids asked. We weren?t sure. But the kids definitely wanted to settle at a lobby table and join the board game fun.?And,?of course, my 7-year-old insisted that our game be fetched from the car.

Which, I soon discovered,?was?Headbanz ? a?game that requires participants to wear blue plastic?headbands and then attach a card to the headband that reads??I am a spoon? or ?I am a goat? or ?I am a banana? or ?I am a ridiculous?person wearing a headband in a hotel lobby? (okay, not that). The player then asks questions, trying to figure out what they are (besides a public spectacle) before a timer runs out.

?It really is some silly?fun. And board game makers and advocates for family game nights really are onto something true and simple when they argue that playing games??is a wonderful way to pull together the members of your clan.

Because nothing quite bonds you to your loved ones as looking at each other with mashed-down, headband hair and hearing one among you shout, ?Am I a pig?!?
