Hands-on with Mercedes-Benz mBrace2

Mercedes-Benz showed off its next infotainment advancement in the form of mBrace2, a combination of telematics and infotainment, all powered by an embedded 3G modem.

If you can make it through the video after the break, you'll see the new Facebook, Google POI and Street View integration, along with the updated browsing experience. Unfortunately, the data connection on the floor made for a sputtery, jilted experience. But that's not the only issue.

The system still uses the central COMAND knob for navigating through the menus, but it also serves as a five-way controller to pan and click through the browser. Imagine using a D-pad to poke around the Web and you're not far off. Thankfully, an all-new system is due out in 2014 with the next generation S-Class flagship, but until then, new SL owners and the rest of the 2013 Mercedes lineup will have to make due with this.

Treasure Valley golf courses embrace snowless winter

EAGLE, Idaho - While the side-effects of a practically snow-less winter are challenging ski resorts, golf courses are celebrating the unusually dry weather.

Treasure Valley golf courses typically shut down during the beginning of December or even the end of November. This season, it's already the second week of January and many are still open.

"What are we doing in January - golfing with no snow on the ground?" said Michael Judd, a golfer from Eagle. "It's unbelievable."

Judd says this is this driest winter he can remember in his eight years living in Idaho.

While his son says he's a little disappointed about there being no snow, it's not all bad.

"It's cold and the greens are a lot rougher and the ball can bounce farther, but I think it's really good to be golfing in the winter," said Aidan Judd, an Eagle resident.

Golf courses say the extra days open are bringing in quite a few extra dollars.

"It definitely has been a pleasant surprise," said T.J. Gomez, the head golf pro at Shadow Valley golf course. "There's no question about that."

However, golf courses say there's a definite downside to the wacky weather - without Mother Nature's moisture, their grass is beginning to dry out.

S. Africa party marks 100 years

By The Associated Press

Tens of thousands of chanting and dancing revelers waved the green and gold colors of the African National Congress as Africa's oldest liberation movement celebrated its 100th anniversary Sunday, though many South Africans say the party hasn't delivered on its promises.

A dozen African leaders and more former heads of state, along with African kings and chieftains, attended a midnight ceremony where President Jacob Zuma lit a flame, expected to stay alight the entire year, at the red brick, tin-roofed Wesleyan church where black intellectuals and activists founded the party in 1912.

Absent because of his frailty was Nelson Mandela, South Africa's first black president who is just six years younger than his movement. The world icon was jailed for 27 years by the racist white government and his organization was formerly declared a terrorist group by the United States.

Joy at the ANC's leading role in ending white minority rule in 1994 was tinged with sadness over its failure to bring a better life to most South Africans, and corruption scandals that have embroiled its members in recent years.

"It means a lot to be alive when the ANC is celebrating 100 years of its existence," Mayor Tulani Sebego of Bergville said.

The stadium at Bloemfontein, upgraded to a 45,000-seater for the 2010 soccer World Cup, overflowed Sunday with crowds that spilled outside, dancing and singing under a blazing sun.

"We need to ensure that our program of transforming our country is accelerated and taken to new steps," Zuma said in an afternoon address, flanked by an aide holding an umbrella.

He acknowledged the problems confronting the ANC, saying it needs to "defeat the demon of factionalism" and to take "urgent and practical steps to restore the core values, stamp out factionalism and promote political discipline."

Thousands left the stadium during Zuma's 90-minute speech, which was devoted mainly to the history of the ANC. Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe then proposed a toast and told the half-empty stadium that if they did not have champagne, they could take photographs of their leaders drinking, or raise clenched fists.

The ANC describes itself as a champion of the working class and the poor, but inequality has grown in recent years as a small group of black elite have become multimillionaires.

Crocodile invites self into Australian home

(AP) ? Wildlife rangers have helped an Australian family deal with an uninvited guest: a 5-foot-6-inch (1.7-meter) crocodile that wandered into their living room.

The juvenile saltwater crocodile wandered into a home in Bees Creek, a suburb of the northern Australian city of Darwin. Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported that the family found it in a partially enclosed living area Saturday morning after their dog's barking woke them.

Resident Jo Dodd describes the encounter as "a very surreal moment" and "the most freakiest thing." She suspects the croc might been stalking the dog.

Crocodile management official Dani Best told ABC the croc might have been forced out of a nearby creek by a larger croc. The intruder has been relocated to a crocodile farm.

After years of rumors and teases, iconic high-kicking rockers Van Halen are officially all the way back. Following an intimate club show in New York on Thursday night at Café Wha?, the group revealed that they will hit the road for a 45-date tour beginning February 18 in Louisville, Kentucky.

The first show will take place less than two weeks after the release of A Different Kind of Truth, VH's first album of new material with original singer David Lee Roth since 1984. The first single and video from the disc by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame act, "Tattoo," are slated to drop on Tuesday.

The tour will feature support from legendary R&B act Kool & the Gang on select dates, with tickets going on sale on January 14. According to a press release, fans can expect to hear some new songs on the tour alongside some of the band's most beloved tunes, including "Eruption," "Running With the Devil," the Kinks' "You Really Got Me," "Everybody Wants Some," "Jump" and "Hot for Teacher."

In late December, Van Halen confirmed the reunion tour and album with 57-year-old Roth via a video released on the band's official site.

Van Halen's original bass player and backing vocalist, Michael Anthony, was booted from the band in 2006 after 32 years and replaced by guitarist Eddie Van Halen's teenage son, Wolfgang. After parting ways with Roth in 1985, Van Halen rebooted with singer Sammy Hagar in 1985, enjoying a string of hit albums and songs through 1996, when Hagar was shown the door and briefly replaced by former Extreme singer Gary Cherone, who only lasted three years in the slot. After bringing Hagar back in from 2003 to 2005, Van Halen invited Roth back into the fold several years ago and toured with him in 2007 and 2008.
